Childhood asthma complicated by anxiety: an application of cognitive behavioural therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To identify characteristics within the patient and the environment that might be instrumental in triggering and maintaining an episode of asthma in children whose objective lung function tests suggested a less severe exacerbation than the subjective report and behaviour indicated, and also to investigate the efficacy of a cognitive behavioural intervention, using the paradigm of a panic anxiety disorder. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective investigation of 23 case records and psychosocial histories, focusing on the characteristics of the sample and the number of presentations and admissio

Brief cognitive behavioural therapy with male adolescent offenders in open custody or on probation: an evaluation of management of anger.

A 6-wk. cognitive behavioural program administered to 24 adolescent male offenders assigned to open custody and 5 to probation showed no mean differences on the Test of Nonverbal Intelligence, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, and the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory. Significant correlations were found for the personality measures with pretreatment and posttreatment scores on the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory.

Self-treatment of bulimia nervosa: a pilot study.

Twenty-eight patients with ICD-10 bulimia nervosa or atypical bulimia nervosa were given a cognitive-behavioral treatment handbook and were reassessed 4-6 weeks later. On a clinician-rated global improvement scale 12 patients had much improved and 8 patients had somewhat improved. Fifteen patients were abstinent of vomiting or laxatives at reassessment as opposed to five patients before treatment. Of the 21 patients who were bringing before treatment, 7 had a 75-100% reduction of binges and 5 had a 50-75% reduction of binges. Patients' nutritional knowledge increased significantly. A patient-a

Generalization of therapeutic changes in agoraphobia: the role of perceived self-efficacy.

Investigated the extent and mechanisms of therapeutic generalization across distinct areas of agoraphobic dysfunction. Twenty-seven severe agoraphobics were each given performance-based treatment for some phobic areas while leaving their other phobias untreated. Behavioral tests revealed that (a) the treated phobias improved significantly more than the untreated (transfer) phobias, (b) the transfer phobias improved significantly more than control phobias, and (c) the transfer benefits were highly variable within and between subjects. Analyses of possible cognitive mechanisms revealed that perc

Perceptions and Experiences of Uninsured Latinx Adult Participants in a Community Health Worker-Delivered Intervention to Address Depression.

Latinx immigrants have an increased risk of depression and other negative mental health problems. Community health workers (CHWs) have a history of bridging the divide between marginalized communities and health care systems. Since 2019, we have been implementing and evaluating a ten 1-hour-sessions intervention delivered by a CHW and adapted from cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness exercises, and behavioral activation to treat mild to severe depressive symptoms and anxiety. There has been little research on the subjective experiences of the participants receiving mental health services …

Efficacy of smoking cessation therapy alone or integrated with prolonged exposure therapy for smokers with PTSD: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is related to an increased risk of smoking cessation failure. In fact, the quit rate in smokers with PTSD (23.2%) is one of the lowest of all mental disorders. Features of PTSD that contribute to smokers' progression to nicotine dependence and cessation relapse include negative affect, fear, increased arousal, irritability, anger, distress intolerance, and anxiety sensitivity. Anxiety sensitivity is higher in people with PTSD than in any other anxiety disorder except for panic disorder. High anxiety sensitivity is uniquely associated with greater odds of la

Self-Enucleation and Severe Ocular Injury in the Psychiatric Setting.

BACKGROUND: Although the first medically-reported case of auto-enucleation was described in the mid-19th century, ocular self-gouging has long been depicted in historical legend and mythology. Cases of enucleation have since been identified across various cultures. Though relatively uncommon, this major form of self-mutilation now afflicts approximately 500 individuals per year, and may present more commonly among certain clinical populations. METHODS: We present 2 cases of self-enucleation in patients with psychotic illnesses and review existing literature on the history of enucleation, asso

D-Cycloserine acts via increasing the GluN1 protein expressions in the frontal cortex and decreases the avoidance and risk assessment behaviors in a rat traumatic stress model.

D-cycloserine (DCS), an FDA approved anti-tuberculosis drug has extensively been studied for its cognitive enhancer effects in psychiatric disorders. DCS may enhance the effects of fear extinction trainings in animals during exposure therapy and hence we investigated the effects of DCS on distinct behavioral parameters in a predator odor stress model and tested the optimal duration for repeated daily administrations of the agent. Cat fur odor blocks were used to produce stress and avoidance and risk assessment behavioral parameters were used where DCS or saline were used as treatments in adjun

Nonpharmacologic treatments for migraine and tension-type headache: how to choose and when to use.

There are a variety of nonpharmacologic treatments for headache. Educating patients about headache and its management, identifying and managing triggers (via diaries), modifying lifestyles, and understanding the importance of adopting and adhering to interventions (either pharmacologic or nonpharmacologic) are relevant to all persons with headache. In addition, specific nonpharmacologic treatments can be used either alone or in conjunction with ongoing pharmacologic intervention. Strong candidates for nonpharmacologic treatment include individuals with significant headache-related disability,

Plasma p-tau217 and Aβ42/40 as markers of Aβ pathology in the Lewy body continuum.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated whether plasma phosphorylated tau-217 (p-tau217), amyloid beta (Aβ)42/40, and their combination could serve as biomarkers of Aβ co-pathology across the Lewy body continuum, where Aβ is frequently observed from prodromal to symptomatic stages. METHODS: Individuals with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), Parkinson's disease (PD), and their shared prodromal stage, isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) underwent plasma sampling, Aβ-PET, and cognitive testing. RESULTS: Higher plasma p-tau217, lower Aβ42/40, and their interaction were ass

The impact of biological sex and sex hormones on cognition in a rat model of early, pre-motor Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is well known for motor deficits such as bradykinesia. However, patients often experience additional deficits in working memory, behavioral selection, decision-making and other executive functions. Like other features of PD, the incidence and severity of these cognitive symptoms differ in males and females. However, preclinical models have not been used to systematically investigate the roles that sex or sex hormones may play in these complex signs. To address this, we used a Barnes maze spatial memory paradigm to compare the effects of a bilateral nigrostriatal dopami

Apolipoprotein E Isoform-specific changes related to stress and trauma exposure.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a highly prevalent mental health disorder. Due to the high level of variability in susceptibility and severity, PTSD therapies are still insufficient. In addition to environmental exposures, genetic risks play a prominent role and one such factor is apolipoprotein E. The protein (apoE) is functionally involved in cholesterol transport and metabolism and exists as 3 major isoforms in humans: E2, E3, and E4. To model the role of apolipoprotein E isoform in stress-related changes in behavior and cognition, female and male mice (3-5 months of age) expressin

Long term behavioral effects of functional dopaminergic neurons generated from human neural stem cells in the rat 6-OH-DA Parkinson's disease model. Effects of the forced expression of BCL-X(L).

Parkinson's disease (PD) motor symptoms are caused by the progressive degeneration of ventral mesencephalic (VM) dopaminergic neurons (DAn) in the Substantia Nigra pars compacta (SNpc). Cell replacement therapy for PD is based on the concept that the implantation of DAn in the striatum can functionally restore the dopamine levels lost in the disease. In the current study we have used an immortalized human VM neural stem cell line (hVM1) that generates DAn with the A9 phenotype. We have previously found that the forced expression of Bcl-X(L) in these cells enhances DAn generation and improves,

The physician's role in managing acute stress disorder.

Acute stress disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis that may occur in patients within four weeks of a traumatic event. Features include anxiety, intense fear or helplessness, dissociative symptoms, reexperiencing the event, and avoidance behaviors. Persons with this disorder are at increased risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder. Other risk factors for posttraumatic stress disorder include current or family history of anxiety or mood disorders, a history of sexual or physical abuse, lower cognitive ability, engaging in excessive safety behaviors, and greater symptom severity one to two

Non-invasive brain stimulation in frontotemporal dementia: syndrome-specific signals and priorities for future trials.

Frontotemporal dementia is the second most common cause of young-onset dementia after Alzheimer's disease and lacks disease-modifying treatment. This narrative review summarizes human studies of non-invasive brain stimulation, including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and theta-burst stimulation, transcranial electrical stimulation, and transcranial photobiomodulation, in frontotemporal dementia and primary progressive aphasia. We review stimulation targets, protocols, outcomes, and safety, and organize the evidence by clinical subtype and modality. Current data remain preliminary

Disparities in Adult ADHD Care Delivery Among U.S. Telepsychology Providers.

OBJECTIVE: At least a third of U.S. adults with ADHD do not access recommended treatments (medication or cognitive behavioral therapy [CBT]), and those receiving treatment face barriers (e.g., inconsistent availability of medication). We investigated systemic inequities in CBT access for adults with ADHD versus psychiatric diagnoses with similar prevalence. METHOD: We accessed and extracted publicly available listings from the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT) provider directory (N = 12,898) in April 2025. RESULTS: Only 26.4% of PSYPACT providers explicitly offer any services …
