Epidemiology of Necator americanus hookworm infections in Xiulongkan Village, Hainan Province, China: high prevalence and intensity among middle-aged and elderly residents.

Hookworm is highly endemic to Hainan Province, an island located in the South China Sea. To investigate the prevalence and intensity of infection in the area, the village of Xiulongkan was surveyed between April and July 1998. A cross-sectional study was conducted in which fecal samples of 80% of the village residents (631 individuals) were tested for the presence of helminth eggs. Hookworm was the predominant intestinal helminth in Xiulongkan, where it was determined that 60% of those tested were infected. Necator americanus was the predominant species of hookworm in this population. The prev

Contextual control of CD8⁺ T cell priming by dendritic cell subsets in tumor and inflammatory microenvironments.

UNLABELLED: Conventional dendritic cells orchestrate adaptive immunity by trafficking peripheral antigens to draining lymph nodes and presenting peptide-MHC complexes to prime naïve T cells. Migratory and lymph node resident conventional dendritic cell subsets occupy distinct anatomical niches and have been shown to shape T cell activation in a variety of immunologic contexts including infection, vaccination and cancer. How peripheral tissue context and dendritic cell subset specific transcriptional programs collaborate to determine CD8 + T cell priming remains incompletely defined. Using fluo

Integrated Metabolic Modeling, Culturing, and Transcriptomics Explain Enhanced Virulence of Vibrio cholerae during Coinfection with Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli.

Gene essentiality is altered during polymicrobial infections. Nevertheless, most studies rely on single-species infections to assess pathogen gene essentiality. Here, we use genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs) to explore the effect of coinfection of the diarrheagenic pathogen Vibrio cholerae with another enteric pathogen, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). Model predictions showed that V. cholerae metabolic capabilities were increased due to ample cross-feeding opportunities enabled by ETEC. This is in line with increased severity of cholera symptoms known to occur in patients with dual

Factors associated with nurses' adherence to standard precautions: implications for healthcare-associated infection prevention and occupational safety in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) remain a major threat to patient safety and healthcare workforce protection, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic. Standard precautions (SPs) are the most fundamental infection prevention measures used to reduce pathogen transmission and occupational exposure in clinical settings. Although awareness of SPs has increased, adherence among nurses continues to vary across practice domains. Factors such as familiarity with SP-related knowledge, years of nursing experience, and perceived barriers in daily practice may influence compliance; howe

High Antimicrobial Resistance in ESKAPE Pathogens at a Rwandan Tertiary Hospital.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health threat, increasing morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Multi-drug resistant ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter cloacae) cause most hospital-acquired infections. Local data on their resistance profiles remain limited in low-income settings. This study assessed the prevalence and resistance patterns of ESKAPE pathogens isolated from clinical specimens at Rwanda Military Referral and Teaching Hospital. A descriptive cross-se

Detection of anti-arboviral immunoglobulin G by using a monoclonal antibody-based capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Monoclonal antibody (MAb)-based capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for the detection of anti-arboviral immunoglobulin G (IgG ELISAs) were developed for a comprehensive array of medically important arboviruses from the Alphavirus, Flavivirus, and Bunyavirus genera. Tests were optimized and standardized so that maximum homology could be maintained among working parameters for the different viral agents, enabling a wide range of viruses to be easily tested for at one time. MAbs were screened for suitability as capture vehicles for antigens from the three genera. The final test co
