Factors associated with adherence to treatment in children and adolescents with chronic rheumatic diseases.

OBJECTIVE: There are several factors that contribute to poor adherence to treatment in children and adolescents with chronic rheumatic diseases, worsening their quality of life and prognosis. Our aim was to assess the rates of adherence to treatment and to identify the socioeconomic and clinical factors associated. METHODS: The sample included 99 patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic erythematosus lupus, dermatomyositis or juvenile scleroderma. All patients were followed at the outpatient pediatric rheumatology for a minimum period of 6 months. To assess adherence, a questionn…

Soft tissue and subcutaneous calcification in connective tissue diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Calcinosis is a recognized manifestation of many connective-tissue diseases, especially juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) and systemic sclerosis; however, little is known about the pathogenesis and the treatment of this condition. The purpose of this review is to discuss the most recently published data about calcinosis in connective-tissue diseases with emphasis on the pathogenesis and its treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: Calcinosis is more common in patients with sustained disease-activity and longer disease duration. JDM patients with anti-p140 antibodies and tumour necrosis fac…

Circulating miR-142-3p levels in patients with systemic sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Recently, increased evidence has shown that serum micro (mi)RNA levels are a useful biomarker for the diagnosis, prognosis and t … rom 61 patients with SSc and 20 healthy controls. Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), dermatomyositis (DM) and scleroderma spectrum disorder (SSD), who did not fulfil American College of Rheumatology criteria for SSc but might develop SSc in the future, were included as disease controls in this study. miRNAs were purified from serum, and miR-142-3p …

Cancer-associated myositis and anti-p155 autoantibody in a series of 85 patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy.

A new autoantibody against a 155-kDa protein has been described in patients with myositis. We conducted a study to determine the occurrence and types of cancer occurring in a cohort of patients with polymyositis (PM) or dermatomyositis (DM) and analyzed the value of this autoantibody as a serologic marker of cancer-associated myositis (CAM). Serum samples from all patients were examined by protein immunoprecipitation assays with HeLa cells to determine the presence of a 155-kDa protein band. HLA-DRB1 and DQA1 typing was performed by polymerase chain reaction-reverse sequence specific oligonucl…

A longitudinal, integrated, clinical, histological and mRNA profiling study of resistance exercise in myositis.

Polymyositis and dermatomyositis are orphan, chronic skeletal muscle disorders characterized by weakness, infiltrations by mononuclear inflammatory cells, and fibrosis. Until recently, patients were advised to refrain from physical activity because of fears of exacerbation of muscle inflammation. However, recent studies have shown that moderate exercise training in combination with immunosuppressive drugs can improve muscle performance. Despite the positive effects of exercise training, the molecular mechanisms underlying the exercise-associated clinical improvements remain poorly understood. …
