PURPOSE: Keratoconus affects all races, yet very little information exists as to the relative frequency in patients of different ethnic origin. We aimed to establish the incidence and severity of keratoconus in Asian and white patients.
METHODS: The hospital records of the ophthalmology department of a large Midlands hospital with a catchment population of approximately 900,000 (87% white, 11% Asian, 2% other) were examined retrospectively for the 10 year period from 1989 to 1998.

A study was undertaken to determine the incidence of bruising among blood donors and to analyse their response to the management of this complication. A total of 52 510 donors were bled at 476 consecutive donor sessions held by the Brentwood Centre during a 4-month period. Of these, 344 donors (0.66%) were found to have developed bruises following venepuncture. The incidence of bruising among males was 0. 35% and that among females was 0.98%. The potential for significant blood loss following deciduous tooth extractions has been a factor in treatment planning in dental care for children. This paper reports the evaluation of a skin care education programme conducted on a fine chemicals manufacturing site where over 1,000 employees are located. An opportunistic survey of louse distribution upon the peacock Pavo cristatus was undertaken following a cull of 23 birds from an English zoo. After complete skin and feather dissolution, 2 species of lice were retrieved, Goniodes pavonis and Amyrsidea minuta. The distribution of both louse species could be described by a negative binomial model. The significance of this is discussed in relation to transmission dynamics of lice in the atypical avian mating system found in the peacock, which involves no male parental care.

Frequency figures for transsexualism, concerning incidence, prevalence and sex ratio calculated in the 1960s and 1970s, were compared with recent reports. The incidence figures remained constant over time, whereas the prevalence figures tended to increase during the review period. The incidence was found to be of the same magnitude in men and women, while the corresponding ratio for prevalence figures was 3:1. This study was performed to assess the workload imposed by treatment for infertility on a retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening programme. We reviewed the records of all babies born between August 1991 and December 1994 as a result of treatment in the Assisted Conception Unit of this hospital, and of all babies screened for ROP over the same period. Fifteen NHS occupational health departments from the Wessex and Oxford regions took part in an audit of the management of sharps injuries and contamination incidents. The autoimmune blistering disease pemphigus is more common in the Indian subcontinent than in the UK. This study of 19 patients from Oxford, UK and 39 patients from New Delhi, India demonstrates that the incidence of the disease subtypes is different in the two countries. In the UK the commonest subtypes are pemphigus vulgaris and foliaceus with equal prevalence (both eight of 19), but in India pemphigus vulgaris is the most frequent (31 of 39), while pemphigus foliaceus is uncommon (three of 39) and with equal prevalence to the other subtypes.
