Pestilence, persistence and pathogenicity: infection strategies of Bartonella.

It has been nearly two decades since the discovery of Bartonella as an agent of bacillary angiomatosis in AIDS patients and persistent bacteremia and 'nonculturable' endocarditis in homeless people. Since that time, the number of Bartonella species identified has increased from one to 24, and 10 of these bacteria are associated with human disease. Although Bartonella is the only genus that infects human erythrocytes and triggers pathological angiogenesis in the vascular bed, the group remains understudied compared with most other bacterial pathogens. Numerous questions regarding Bartonella's m

Do primary adult-onset focal dystonias share aetiological factors?

To consider whether the various clinical types of primary late-onset dystonia have a common aetiological background, or are each distinct and separate entities, sharing only the clinical appearance of dystonia, we reviewed epidemiological, clinical, neurophysiological and imaging data reported in patients with different forms of primary late-onset dystonia. The epidemiological and clinical features that distinguished the various clinical types and suggest aetiological differences were prevalence, age of onset, sex preference, sensory tricks, and tendency to spread. Likewise, aetiological diffe

Epidemiology of human papillomavirus infection in Greek asymptomatic women.

In an attempt to estimate the prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV) positivity among asymptomatic, cytologically normal Greek women, and the possible associations between HPV infection and other demographic, sexual, behavioural and sociological parameters, we undertook an epidemiological study of 226 clinically normal women from an outpatient gynaecological clinic in Northern Greece. The polymerase chain reaction was used for detection of HPV DNA and dot blot hybridization analysis for HPV typing (only for the high-risk types 16 and 18). Eighty-two of the 226 women examined (36.3%) were po

The global epidemiology of diabetes mellitus.

Systematic studies of diabetes prevalence and incidence are now indicating the extent and impact of the disease and its complications. A major handicap in establishing a true global picture has been the lack of uniformity in defining and classifying diabetes, and an additional limiting factor has been the grouping of different types of diabetes in published prevalence data. It appears the prevalence of insulin dependent (Type 1) and non-insulin dependent (Type 2) diabetes varies between and within ethnic groups, e.g. rural versus urban dwellers, thus making it difficult to compare data from di

Clinical and molecular characteristics of KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae bloodstream infections: Results of a multicentre study.

OBJECTIVE: Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) is a great cause of concern and often associated with bloodstream infections (BSIs) and a high mortality rate. Here we identified the risk factors of KPC-Kp BSIs observed in three Italian hospitals and studied the epidemiology of KPC-Kp strains. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of KPC-Kp BSIs was performed from 2014 to 2019 at three hospitals in central Italy (Ancona, Pesaro-Fano, and Perugia). Uni- and multi-variable analyses were performed to evaluate the clinical variables associated with mortality. Pulsed-fie

A new typing scheme demonstrates high discriminatory power for Treponema pallidum subspecies.

The global resurgence of treponematoses, particularly syphilis, poses a growing public health challenge. Despite recent advances in sequencing technologies, obtaining complete Treponema pallidum genome sequences for epidemiological studies remains time-consuming and challenging due to the difficulty related to procuring clinical samples with sufficient treponemal burden to fulfil the sequencing requirements. There is an urgent need for rapid, cost-effective and accessible typing methods suitable for laboratories with Sanger sequencing resources. Based on the analysis of 121 T. pallidum genomes

Epidemiology of bovine tuberculosis in Tanzania: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is an important animal disease in the world, with both economic and zoonotic implications. The disease is still endemic in developing world, such as Tanzania due to lack of rigorous bTB control measures. Despite its significant economic and public health importance in Tanzania, its epidemiological information is still inconsistent. METHODS: To address this, we carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of published articles on bTB epidemiology in Tanzania from 1993 to 2024. Eleven epidemiological themes were examined: prevalence, distribution, in

Alcohol consumption-none is better than a little.

Alcohol is socially accepted and widely consumed as a recreational beverage. Furthermore, it is used as a disinfectant for medicinal purposes and as a cultural asset it is also part of religious rituals. However, it is also an intoxicant and an addictive substance. The deleterious side of alcohol is reflected in the fact that around 3 million people worldwide die every year as a direct or indirect result of alcohol consumption. For several decades, epidemiological studies suggested that drinking alcohol in moderate quantities was beneficial. This was referred to as the "French paradox," which

Clinical epidemiology, determinants, and outcomes of viral encephalitis in Ghana; a cross-sectional study.

Viral encephalitis is a rare, yet severe neurological disorder. It poses a significant public health threat due to its high morbidity and mortality. Despite the disproportionate burden of the disease in impoverished African countries, the true extent of the problem remains elusive due to the scarcity of accurate diagnostic methods. The absence of timely and effective diagnostic tools, particularly Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction, has led to misguided treatment, and an underestimation of the disease burden in Ghana. We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study to determine the viral aet
