Geographic and temporal variations in cancer incidence attributable to human papillomavirus infection in China: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Current epidemiological data on cancer incidence attributable to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in China remain unclear. This study provides an updated assessment of the magnitude of and geographic variability in the incidence of HPV-attributable cancer in China in 2013-2017, temporal trends from 1988 to 2017 and projections to 2032. METHODS: Data were extracted from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Volumes VII-XII. The population-attributable fraction was calculated by multiplying the high-risk HPV prevalence at each anatomical site by the specific biomarker positivi

Drivers of the dynamics of the spread of cholera in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2000-2018: An eco-epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: The dynamics of the spread of cholera epidemics in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), from east to west and within western DRC, have been extensively studied. However, the drivers of these spread processes remain unclear. We therefore sought to better understand the factors associated with these spread dynamics and their potential underlying mechanisms. METHODS: In this eco-epidemiological study, we focused on the spread processes of cholera epidemics originating from the shores of Lake Kivu, involving the areas bordering Lake Kivu, the areas surrounding the lake areas, a

Molecular genetics and animal models in autistic disorder.

Autistic disorder is a behavioural syndrome beginning before the age of 3 years and lasting over the whole lifetime. It is characterised by impaired communication, impaired social interactions, and repetitive interests and behaviour. The prevalence is about 7/10,000 taking a restrictive definition and more than 1/500 with a broader definition, including all the pervasive developmental disorders. The importance of genetic factors has been highlighted by epidemiological studies showing that autistic disorder is one of the most genetic neuropsychiatric diseases. The relative risk of first relativ

Multisite neural tube closure in humans.

We present evidence for multisite NT closure in humans with representative examples of types of NTDs that would be expected if NT closure in humans is similar to experimental mice models. We determine that the majority of NTDs can be classified by the multisite closure model. Further evidence for multisite closure of the NT is apparent in previous epidemiological studies, recognized monogenic disorders, and environmental and teratogenic exposures. Previous reliance on the single-site closure model has resulted in grouping of anomalies, obscuring evidence for multisite NT closure, etiological h

The UroLume endoprosthesis and UroLume cripple syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis of pathophysiology, complications, surgical management, psychological burden, and epidemiology of surviving patients worldwide.

BACKGROUND: The UroLume endoprosthesis (AMS/Endo-care), commercially available 1988-2007 and FDA-approved in 1996, was positioned as a permanent minimally invasive solution for recurrent bulbar urethral stricture and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Despite early procedural success, long-term data revealed a severe complication profile-including irreversible urethral destruction, spongiofibrosis, MDR infections, chronic kidney disease, and significant psychological morbidity-culminating in a clinical entity described here under an author-proposed conceptual framework termed 'UroLume Cripple Syndr

Tobamoviruses: Advances in Molecular Biology, Host Interactions and Integrated Disease Management.

Tobamoviruses (viruses in the genus Tobamovirus, family Virgaviridae) lead to major yield losses in economically important crops around the world. In this review, we go beyond the canonical gene expression framework by integrating recent discoveries of reverse open reading frames (rORFs) on the negative-strand RNA. These rORFs have only been experimentally validated in cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV), with predicted sequence-conserved homologs across a subset of the genus, including TMV, ToBRFV, and PMMoV. However, they are not universally present in all tobamoviruses. We systematic

Global, regional, and national burden of older adults peripheral nervous system tumors (1990-2021): a systematic analysis of incidence, DALYs, and deaths with projections to 2050.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nervous system tumors are abnormal proliferations originating from neural tissues (such as the nerve sheath and nerve fibers), classified as either benign or malignant. Common subtypes encompass schwannomas, neurofibromas, and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Notably, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are characterized by their high malignancy potential and have demonstrated a concerning rise in both incidence and mortality rates in recent epidemiological studies. METHODS: Based on the Global Burden of Disease 2021 database, we conducted a statistical an

Epidemiology of Brachial Plexus Birth Injury and the Impact of Cesarean Section on Its Incidence.

BACKGROUND: While prior research provided thorough analysis of the epidemiology of brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) from 1997 to 2012, recent trends are unknown. The goal of this study was to update the understanding of the epidemiology and risk factors for BPBI. METHODS: Installments of the Kids' Inpatient Database (1997 to 2019) were used to estimate BPBI incidence in the United States in comparison to several independent variables over time. An interaction between cesarean (C-) section and newborn weight was explored by defining BPBI rates in a stratified manner. A logistic regression m

Simultaneously characterizing the comparative economics of routine female adolescent nonavalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and assortativity of sexual mixing in Hong Kong Chinese: a modeling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although routine vaccination of females before sexual debut against human papillomavirus (HPV) has been found to be cost-effective around the world, its cost-benefit has rarely been examined. We evaluate both the cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit of routine female adolescent nonavalent HPV vaccination in Hong Kong to guide its policy, and by extension that of mainland China, on HPV vaccination. One major obstacle is the lack of data on assortativity of sexual mixing. Such difficulty could be overcome by inferring sexual mixing parameters from HPV epidemiologic data. METHODS: We

Parathyroidectomy in patients on renal replacement therapy: an epidemiologic study.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a frequent complication of long-term dialysis treatment, and despite recent advances in medical therapy, surgical parathyroidectomy (PTx) is necessary in a considerable number of uremic patients. A prevalence of PTx of 22% was reported in Europe in 1988 in patients on dialysis from 10 to 15 yr, but no large-scale epidemiologic study has been published since then. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors for PTx in patients on renal replacement therapy (RRT) in Lombardy and to determine whether the incidence has changed ov
