Anti-aversive effects of the atypical antipsychotic, aripiprazole, in animal models of anxiety.

Aripiprazole is a unique antipsychotic that seems to act as a partial agonist at dopamine D2-receptors, contrasting with other drugs in this class, which are silent antagonists. Aripiprazole may also bind to serotonin receptors. Both neurotransmitters may play major roles in aversion-, anxiety- and panic-related behaviours. Thus, the present work tested the hypothesis that this antipsychotic could also have anti-aversive properties. Male Wistar rats received injections of aripiprazole (0.1-10 mg/kg) and were tested in the open field, in the elevated plus and T mazes (EPM and ETM, respectively)

Daily assessment of stressful events and coping among post-menopausal women with breast cancer treated with adjuvant chemotherapy.

The purpose of the study was twofold: to examine what type of daily stressful events post-menopausal woman with breast cancer experience during adjuvant chemotherapy and how bothersome these are and to identify coping strategies used by these women used to manage such stressful events. The patient group comprised 75 consecutively invited women (>or=55 years of age) at two university hospitals and one county hospital in Sweden. The Daily Coping Assessment was used to collect data over time. Data were analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Six categories of stressful events were identif

Chronic subjective dizziness.

CONCLUSION: Chronic subjective dizziness (CSD) is frequent and affects twice as many women as men. Anxiety is a strong predisposing factor. The pathophysiologic concept of this disorder assumes that balance function and emotion share common neurologic pathways, which might explain that the balance disorder can provoke fear and vice versa, giving rise to a problem in perception of space and motion. In anxious patients this can turn into a space and motion phobia, with avoidance behaviour. OBJECTIVE: CSD is a diagnosis based on the hypothesis of an interaction between the vestibular system and

Predictors of perceived risk for colon cancer in a national probability sample in the United States.

This study examines potential predictors of perceived risk for colon cancer in a U.S. sample of 2,949 individuals aged 45 and older with no colon cancer history. We examined perceived comparative risk for colon cancer as the outcome in ordinal regression analyses, and perceived absolute risk for colon cancer in linear regression analyses. Potential predictors included demographics, current risk behaviors, self-reported health, family and personal cancer history, emotion variables (colon cancer worry, general anxiety, and fear of positive screening findings), general cancer beliefs (causes, lac

Emotion induction after direct intracerebral stimulations of human amygdala.

Very few studies in humans have quantified the effect obtained after direct electrical stimulation of the amygdala, in terms of both emotional and physiological responses. We tested patients with drug-resistant partial epilepsies who were explored with intracerebral electrodes in the setting of presurgical evaluation. We assessed the effects of direct electric stimulations in either the right or the left amygdala on verbally self-reported emotions (Izard scale) and on psychophysiological markers of emotions by recording skin conductance responses (SCRs) and by measuring the electromyographic r

Acrophobia and pathological height vertigo: indications for vestibular physical therapy?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acrophobia (fear of heights) may be related to a high degree of height vertigo caused by visual dependence in the maintenance of standing balance. The purpose of this case report is to describe the use of vestibular physical therapy intervention following behavioral therapy to reduce a patient's visual dependence and height vertigo. CASE DESCRIPTION: Mr N was a 37-year-old man with agoraphobia (fear of open spaces) that included symptoms of height phobia. Exposure to heights triggered symptoms of dizziness. Intervention. Mr N underwent 8 sessions of behavioral therapy

Reflex cardioventilatory responses to hypoxia in the flathead gray mullet (Mugil cephalus) and their behavioral modulation by perceived threat of predation and water turbidity.

In hypoxia, gray mullet surface to ventilate well-oxygenated water in contact with air, an adaptive response known as aquatic surface respiration (ASR). Reflex control of ASR and its behavioral modulation by perceived threat of aerial predation and turbid water were studied on mullet in a partly sheltered aquarium with free surface access. Injections of sodium cyanide (NaCN) into either the bloodstream (internal) or ventilatory water stream (external) revealed that ASR, hypoxic bradycardia, and branchial hyperventilation were stimulated by chemoreceptors sensitive to both systemic and water O2

Moderate doses of ethanol partially reverse avoidance learning deficits in high-alcohol-drinking rats.

We previously reported that ethanol-naive high-alcohol-drinking (HAD1 and HAD2) rats exhibited selective deficits in active avoidance learning, as compared to low-alcohol-drinking (LAD1 and LAD2) rats, in a signaled bar-pressing task [Alcohol. Clin. Exp. Res. 24 (2000) 1778]. In the current study, we used appetitive and aversive learning tasks to assess whether administration of ethanol influences approach and avoidance learning in HAD and LAD rats. Rats were administered 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 g ethanol/kg body weight during appetitive and aversive conditioning sessions. We found that ethanol

Rodent doxapram model of panic: behavioral effects and c-Fos immunoreactivity in the amygdala.

BACKGROUND: Panic attacks, the hallmark of panic disorder, are often characterized by hyperventilation. Existing animal models of anxiety have not addressed the effects of the hyperventilation on anxiety-related behaviors. Doxapram is a respiratory stimulant that reliably evokes panic attacks in patients with panic disorder. We examined doxapram in four rodent models of anxiety and sought to identify brain regions involved in its behavioral effects. METHODS: The effects of doxapram were determined for cue and contextual fear conditioning, the open field test, and the social interaction test.

Women's report of unwanted sexual attention during childhood.

Unwanted Sexual Attention (UWSA) refers to unsolicited verbal comments, gestures, stares, and other non-physical attention toward another's sexuality and physical appearance. The present study describes the occurrence of childhood UWSA and explores its relation to child sexual abuse (CSA). Three hundred fifteen university women (mean age=19.5) completed the Exposure to Sexual Attention Scale, a 200-item inventory which assesses various forms of UWSA received prior to age 18. Findings suggested that non-contact UWSA is a pervasive experience across settings for girls, with 98.7% reporting UWSA

Deficits in memory and motor performance in synaptotagmin IV mutant mice.

Synaptotagmin (Syt) IV is a synaptic vesicle protein. Syt IV expression is induced in the rat hippocampus after systemic kainic acid treatment. To examine the functional role of this protein in vivo, we derived Syt IV null [Syt IV(-/-)] mutant mice. Studies with the rotorod revealed that the Syt IV mutants have impaired motor coordination, a result consistent with constitutive Syt IV expression in the cerebellum. Because Syt IV is thought to modulate synaptic function, we also have examined Syt IV mutant mice in learning and memory tests. Our studies show that the Syt IV mutation disrupts cont

HIV testing practices of Zimbabwean physicians and their perspectives on the future use of rapid on-site tests.

To improve HIV testing procedures, rapid on-site HIV tests have been introduced in Zimbabwe. At present, little is known about physicians' perspectives on the potential use of rapid tests in their clinics or about their current laboratory-based testing practices. In a sample of 63 general practitioners in Harare, this study found physicians were generally testing individuals, not couples, and an important reason for suggesting a patient be tested was medical symptoms; frequent reasons for patients requesting the test were insurance purposes, being about to get married or having suspicions abou

Motivation to perform activities of daily living in the institutionalized older adult: can a leopard change its spots?

The concept of motivation has great relevance for the older adult because of the multiple problems that can result in functional limitations. The ability to overcome and transcend these problems is related to the individuals' motivation to maintain and/or improve function. The purpose of this study, which used a naturalistic or constructivist inquiry, was to explore what motivates the institutionalized older adult to perform functional activities. Primary selection was used to obtain the sample which included 44 older adults, 37 (84%) females, and 7(16%) males. The average of participants was

Effect of diazepam and A beta-carboline on open-field and T-maze behaviors in 2-day-old chicks.

The effects of diazepam and the beta-carboline FG 7142 in chicks were examined on several behavioral measures in open-field and T-maze tasks. In the open field, only the higher doses of diazepam affected behavior, suggesting a sedative-like effect, while FG 7142 influenced behavior as would a fear-inducing manipulation. After a low dose of either drug was injected, testing in a T-maze showed that diazepam improved and FG 7142 impaired the escape performance from the isolation chamber, without affecting the time spent in the T-corridor. In three groups of chicks selected on the basis of their f

Treatment of systemic mycoses in patients with AIDS.

Far and away the most common fungal infection associated with HIV infection is candidiasis. This tends to produce mucosal topical infections and local treatment may be enough to control them. Generally we prefer courses of 1-2 weeks rather than chronic suppression, for fear of eliciting overgrowth of resistant isolates. Fluconazole resistant Candida species may be an increasing problem over the next decade. For cryptococcoses the problem is both simpler and more complicated. Fluconazole is highly effective for chronic suppression, but not very effective for initial therapy. Here a short course

Anxiety, anxiolytics and brain stimulation reinforcement.

The premise of this review is that neuronal substrates of anxiety are amenable to investigation using brain stimulation techniques. Anxiolytics such as meprobamate and the benzodiazepines may enhance intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) behavior. Although demonstrated by numerous investigators, this effect shows considerable variability between and within laboratories. Some of this variability is explained by sedative/muscle relaxant effects, which are dissociable from drug-induced increases in ICSS and which may mask these increases. The anticonvulsant actions of anxiolytic drugs are unlikely

Health-related quality of life in Chagas cardiomyopathy: Development of a theoretical model.

OBJECTIVE: Chagas disease can cause several complications, such as Chagas cardiomyopathy, the most severe clinical form of the disease. Chagas cardiomyopathy is complex and involves biological and psychosocial factors that can compromise health-related quality of life. However, it is necessary to establish interactions that significantly impact the health-related quality of life of this population. Therefore, we aimed to develop and present a theoretical model on the impact of Chagas cardiomyopathy on the health-related quality of life of patients. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study wit

Sudden Onset Disordered Eating Behaviors and Appetite Issues in a Local Clinical Cohort of Children With Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS).

OBJECTIVE: Abrupt onset restrictive food intake can be a cardinal symptom of pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS). However, few reports detail eating restriction patterns and baseline eating behaviors in patients with PANS, which we aim to address. Additionally, we aim to compare PANS eating restriction with ARFID. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 130 patients with PANS, aged 4-18 years, presenting for initial assessment at Stanford's PANS/Immune Behavioral Health (IBH) Clinic. Data were abstracted from electronic medical records (EMR) and parent/child questionnaires w
