Preservation of nigral neurons in Pick's disease with Pick bodies: a clinicopathological and morphometric study of five autopsy cases.

Many reports have described loss of neurons in the substantia nigra in Pick's disease (PiD). In those reports, however, "Pick's disease" inc … iscriminating PiD with PB from other diseases showing frontotemporal characteristics, including the frontal lobe degeneration type and the motor neuron disease type of frontotemporal dementia.

Lipoastrocytoma: a rare low-grade astrocytoma variant of pediatric age.

We report on two children with cerebral gliomas showing extensive lipomatous change of tumor cells. One tumor was a large mass occupying the temporal and occipital lobes of the left hemisphere; the other was a cystic lesion with a mural nodule in the left frontal lobe. Histologically, both tumors were composed of glial cells that contained fat droplets coalescing into a single large droplet, thus resulting in an appearance similar to adipocytes. Immunohistochemistry showed GFAP positivity of tumor cells, which was maintained in the cytoplasmic rim of lipidized cells. Synaptophysin and neurofil…

[A case of motor neuron disease with presenile dementia showing bilateral degeneration of the pyramidal tract on cranial MRI].

A 58-year-old man developed dysarthria followed by a personality change. Subsequently, he developed muscle weakness and atrophy of the left upper and lower limbs, leading to repeated falls when he tried to walk. Neurological examination showed mild dementia, dysarthria, dysphagia, atrophy and fasciculation of the tongue, and muscle weakness and atrophy of all four extremities, particularly on the left side. Deep tendon reflexes were slightly diminished in the upper limbs and slightly exaggerated in the lower limbs without Babinski's sign. Cranial MRI revealed marked atrophy of the medial porti

[Reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy in a patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma after treatment with CHOP].

Reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome is a newly characterised and increasingly recognized clinico-radiologic syndrome. Underlyi … ial T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed increased signal intensity in the occipital and frontal lobes in both hemispheres and right parietal lobe. A diagnosis of reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy was made. She presented a favourable outcome with conservative treatment with mannitol and phenytoin. A new cranial scanning showed nearly complete …

[A case of probable Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with a point mutation of prion protein gene codon 180 and atypical MRI findings].

A case of probable Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is reported. A 70-year-old Japanese woman was admitted with a complaint of amnesia. She initially developed Klüver-Bucy syndrome, hypergraphia, and later showed myoclonus and startle response. She developed akinetic mutism within nine months from the onset. Prion protein gene codon 180 point mutation (Met/Ile) was detected and we diagnosed her as CJD. Serial MRI studies revealed abnormal T2 elongation and thickening limited to the cerebral cortices, which started at bilateral temporal lobes and later extended to frontal, parietal, and occipita

Brain-wide activation involved in 15 mA transcranial alternating current stimulation in patients with first-episode major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although 15 mA transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has a therapeutic effect on depression, the activations of br … he electric field distributions of the sagittal, coronal and axial planes showed that the bilateral frontal lobes, bilateral temporal lobes, hippocampus, cingulate, hypothalamus, thalamus, amygdala, cerebellum and brainstem were visibly stimulated by the 15 mA tACS procedure. CONCLUSIONS: Brain-wide activation, including the cortex, subcortical structures, ce …

Older and Wiser: Interpretation of Proverbs in the Face of Age-Related Cortical Atrophy.

In the present study, we investigated whether interpretation of proverbs differs across the lifespan and if so, whether it is associated with age-related fronto-temporal atrophy. Using a sample of 333 healthy individuals aged 18-89 years, we found a significant effect of age on proverb interpretation [H(2) = 12.001, p = 0.002]: old adults (OA) were better than young adults (YA) (p = 0.002), and so were middle-aged-adults (MA) (p = 0.005). OA and MA had significantly less grey matter (GM) than YA in frontal and temporal lobes bilaterally, and OA less than MA in the right temporal lobe. GM volum

Atypical posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in a noncompliant hemodialysis patient: Case report and literature review.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a reversible vasogenic brain edema in patients who present with seizure, headache, visual disturbance, and altered mental status, and a characteristic neuroimaging profile. Although PRES predominantly affects the bilateral parieto-occipital areas, involvement of the frontal and temporal lobes, basal ganglia, brainstem, and cerebellum is not uncommon. Isolated involvement of the brainstem and cerebellum sparing the parieto-occipital lobe is rarely reported. Here, we describe a 47-year-old man with end-stage renal disease on chronic hemodial

Expression of Dopamine Receptor 1A and Cannabinoid Receptor 1 Genes in the Cochlea and Brain after Salicylate-Induced Tinnitus.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mRNA expression of the dopamine receptor 1A (DR1A) and cannabinoid receptor 1 (CR1) genes i … em and inferior colliculus, the hippocampus and parahippocampus, and the temporal lobe, but not the frontal lobe. Conversely, 4-day salicylate treatment caused significantly lower mRNA expression of the CR1 gene in the cochlea and all the brain areas tested. In summary, salicylate-induced tinnitus may be associated with increased mRNA expression of the DR1A ge …

Methotrexate-related leukoencephalopathy without radiation therapy: distribution of brain lesions and pathological heterogeneity on two autopsy cases.

This report concerns two rare autopsy cases of methotrexate (MTX)-related leukoencephalopathy without radiation therapy. In the first case, there were widespread necrotic foci with prominent spheroids, that is, disseminated necrotizing leukoencephalopathy (DNL), mainly in the cerebral white matter. In contrast, in the second case, there were widespread demyelinated foci without significant axonal changes, which we would like to name disseminated demyelinating leukoencephalopathy (DDL), mainly in the cerebral white matter. We emphasize that the pathology of pure MTX-related leukoencephalopathy

Cortical serotonin 5-HT2A receptor binding and social communication in adults with Asperger's syndrome: an in vivo SPECT study.

OBJECTIVE: The cause of autistic spectrum disorder (i.e., autism and Asperger's syndrome) is unknown. The serotonergic (5-HT) system may be especially implicated. However, cortical 5-HT2A receptor density in adults with the disorder has not been examined, to the authors' knowledge. METHOD: The authors investigated cortical 5-HT2A receptor binding in eight adults with Asperger's syndrome and in 10 healthy comparison subjects with single photon emission computed tomography and the selective 5-HT2A receptor ligand 123I iodinated 4-amino-N-[1-[3-(4-fluorophenoxy)propyl]-4-methyl-4-piperidinyl]-5-

Cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome.

There has been persistent uncertainty as to whether lesions of the cerebellum are associated with clinically significant disturbances of behavior and cognition. To address this question, 20 patients with diseases confined to the cerebellum were studied prospectively over a 7-year period and the nature and severity of the changes in neurological and mental function were evaluated. Neurological examination, bedside mental state testing, neuropsychological studies, and anatomic neuroimaging were administered at the time of presentation and during follow-up assessments. Behavioral changes were cli

Von Recklinghausen's disease with a malignant meningeal, cerebral and optic nerve tumour and bilateral vagal schwannomas. Possible mesenchymal histogenesis on light and electron microscopy.

The clinical, histopathologic and fine structural features of multiple unusual tumours detected in a 20-year-old patient with von Recklinghausen's disease, who died within a year of onset of symptoms of a rapidly expanding intracranial tumour, are described. The tumour was found to involve the falx cerebri, the basal leptomeninges and dura mater, both olfactory and optic nerves, both frontal lobes, the right temporal lobe and middle cerebral peduncle, both middle cerebellar peduncles, and with a metastasis in a cervical node. On light and electron microscopy this tumour appeared to be a fibrob…

An autopsy case of atypical senile dementia with atrophy of the temporal lobes--a clinical and histopathological report.

A man aged 70, descendant of an apparently healthy family, showed disorientation, delusional ideas and rages at 66. Later there was slowly advancing deterioration with muteness, disorientation and dysphagia. He died of cardiac failure. There was the diffuse atrophy of the cerebrum, which was remarkably accentuated on both temporal lobes (poles, T2 and T3), where the loss of nerve cells and proliferation of astrocytes were found in the cortex and pallor and conspicuous fibrillary gliosis were noted in the white matter. These findings fundamentally suggest Pick's disease. On the one hand, numero

The effect of post-labeling delay on cerebral blood flow is influenced by age and sex: a study based on arterial spin-labeling magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Whether the effect of post-labeling delay (PLD) on cerebral blood flow (CBF) is influenced by age and sex in adults is unknown. In this study, we mainly aimed to explore the potential influence of age and sex on the effect of PLD on CBF. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 90 healthy adult volunteers (49.47±15.63 years of age; age range, 20-77 years; 47 female; 43 male). All participants underwent 3-dimensional (3D) pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling (ASL) imaging with 3 different PLDs (1,525, 2,025, and 2,525 ms). The CBF values for each PLD, the arterial transit time

[Memory distortions in Alzheimer's disease and other dementias: an underestimated diagnostic parameter].

Dementia disorders such as Alzheimer`s disease (AD) are not exclusively characterized by memory deficits, but also by false memories. False memories are relevant with regard to functional impairments in various areas of life and also entail potential risks. Moreover, false memories are more specific predictors for amyloid pathology in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD, and therefore require consideration in contextualized dementia diagnostics. In addition to functional impairment in the medial temporal lobe, according to recent literature, deficient frontal and executive fun

Radiation-induced intracranial rhabdomyosarcoma- A rare complication: Report of a case with literature review.

Radiation-induced sarcoma (RIS) of the central nervous system is an uncommon late complication of radiation therapy. We report a case of a 47-year-old male patient who underwent surgery followed by irradiation and chemotherapy with temozolomide for a frontal lobe gliosarcoma and presented 43 months later with a recurrent tumor in the same location with interval growth in the size of the lesion. Histology from surgical resection of the recurrent tumor revealed embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). Adjacent brain parenchyma showed radiation-induced changes. There was no evidence of gliosarcoma at re…
