Asthenozoospermia is the most common clinical symptom of male infertility. Molecular markers associated with asthenozoospermia spermatozoa are scarcely identified. The objective of this study was to screen the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in asthenozoospermia spermatozoa and assess the underlying bioinformatics roles in regulation of sperm quality.Based on gene expression omnibus (GEO) database, the GSE22331, GSE1133, and GSE4193 expression profile data were downloaded. The DEGs of asthenozoospermia spermatozoa were identified. Germ cell specific genes in DEGs were further screened. T

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a potentially devastating form of acute inflammatory lung injury as well as a major cause of acute respiratory failure. Although researchers have made significant progresses in elucidating the pathophysiology of this complex syndrome over the years, the absence of a universal detail disease mechanism up until now has led to a series of practical problems for a definitive treatment. This study aimed to predict some genes or pathways associated with sepsis-related ARDS based on a public microarray dataset and to further explore the molecu

Atherosclerotic stenosis of cerebral arteries or intracranial large artery disease (ICLAD) is a major cause of stroke especially in Asians, Hispanics and Africans, but relatively little is known about gene expression changes in vessels at risk. This study compares comprehensive gene expression profiles in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) of New Zealand White rabbits exposed to two stroke risk factors i.e. hypertension and/or hypercholesterolemia, by the 2-Kidney-1-Clip method, or dietary supplementation with cholesterol. Microarray and Ingenuity Pathway Analyses of the MCA of the hypertensive

OBJECTIVE: To find out host gene expression profiles after malarial infection.
METHODS: Further time-course microarray analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells focusing on malaria pathogenesis was performed.
RESULTS: Up-regulation of coagulation-related genes, heat shock proteins, glycolytic enzymes, glucose transporters, and vacuolar H(+)-ATPases was found in acute febrile malaria. In early malaria, prior to detectable parasitemia, CD36 and ICAM1 were up-regulated. During acute malaria, there is correlation between IL-1β and heat shock proteins. CD163, a hemoglobin scavenger receptor,

In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, the BMP-related growth factor DBL-1 regulates body size and male tail morphogenesis via a conserved receptor/Smad signaling pathway. Smads are transcription factors, but rely on transcription cofactors for appropriate regulation of target genes in response to TGF-beta- and BMP-related signals. In the DBL-1 pathway, sma-9 encodes multiple zinc finger transcription factors homologous to Drosophila Schnurri, which functions in Dpp/BMP signaling. We have studied the molecular functions of SMA-9 as a model for transcription cofactor-dependent regulation of ge

In earlier studies we found up-regulation of promoter P3 transcription and total igf2 expression with concomitant down-regulation of h19 expression in human hepatoblastoma (HB). In this study, we investigated the methylation status of these 2 genes and their abnormal regulation in 7 hepatoblastomas and 5 normal counterpart tissues. A specific part of the P3 region of igf2 was de-methylated in tumors with up-regulation of the promoter activity. A site-specific DNA hypermethylation in the h19 5'-region was found in tumor tissues with concomitant down-regulation of this gene. Therefore, abnormal

Cells sense infection through dedicated receptors, yet these surveillance pathways are often subverted by pathogen-encoded virulence factors. Guard immunity provides complementary defense by rapidly killing infected cells in response to infection induced stress. However, the symptoms of infection frequently resemble noninfectious stress, raising the question of how they are distinguished. Using quantitative transcriptomics, proteomics, and global translation measurements during viral infections in vitro and in vivo, we show that infection globally suppresses host gene expression and prevents d

In recent years, escalating global temperatures have adversely affected the yield and quality of horticultural crops. Red pears (Pyrus spp.), prized for their vibrant pigmentation, derive their characteristic coloration primarily from anthocyanin accumulation. Light and temperature are important environmental factors regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis. Light induces the accumulation of anthocyanins in red pear; however, the specific molecular mechanism by which elevated temperatures inhibit anthocyanin biosynthesis in red pear remains unclear. The integration nodes of the light and temperatur

The spontaneous adventitious bud (SAB) mutant of sugarcane, which forms clustered buds on the stem, provides a unique system for elucidating the mechanisms underlying in vivo regeneration and plant meristem differentiation anomalies. The present study investigated the mechanism underlying SAB formation in the sugarcane mutant 'YZ2018-81' through an integrated approach combining histological analysis, endogenous hormone profiling, and RNA-sequencing. Histological analysis revealed that the adventitious buds originated from the dedifferentiating cortical parenchyma cells, following a development

Evolutionarily, plants overproduce ovaries but selectively eliminate those inferiors to ensure competitive offspring to set. This sibling rivalry, reducing grain number, is detrimental agronomically. However, the interaction between early-fertilized and unfertilized ovaries in sequentially-pollinated panicles is unclear. Here, we fertilized the ovaries on half rows of maize ear (HP) while keeping the rest unfertilized to investigate their interaction. HP reduced the growth of unfertilized ovaries while promoting fertilized ovary (grain) development. 13C-isotope labeling of grains led to isotop

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a globally important crop, typically requiring pollination for fruit set. Seedless fruit production-fruit set without pollination (parthenocarpy)-is a desirable trait for horticulture, but its molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Research on tomato fruit set has largely focused on phytohormones such as auxin and gibberellins (GAs), while the role of jasmonic acid (JA) remains unclear. Here, we identified a novel seedless mutant, Sldad1 (Solanum lycopersicum defective in anther dehiscence1) with a mutation in JA biosynthesis induced by ethyl methanesul

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are steroid hormones that are essential for plant growth, development, and environmental adaptation. They control the division, elongation, and differentiation of various cell types throughout the entire plant life cycle, affecting growth and the stress response. Therefore, fine-tuning of BR biosynthesis and modulation of signaling pathways offer possibilities for developing cultivars characterized by adjusted plant architecture or improved stress tolerance to benefit crop production. Additionally, precise BR treatments can be employed to increase the productivity of cro

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a benign gynecological disease that affects about 1% of all women and up to 15% of women of childbearing age. To date, none of the proposed theories exhaustively explain the pathophysiology of the disease or the associated clinical manifestations. As part of efforts to introduce new methods for the early and non-invasive diagnosis of endometriosis, this project investigated changes in the expression of miR-214-5p and miR-548-5p in ectopic and eutopic tissue compared to normal endometrial tissue.

Gliomas are brain tumors associated with high morbidity, relapse and lethality despite improvement in therapeutic regimes. The hypoxic tumor microenvironment is a key feature associated with such poor outcomes in gliomas. The Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF) family of transcription factors are master regulators of cellular proliferation, high metabolic rates and angiogenesis via aberrant expression of downstream genes. Recent studies have implicated long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) as potential prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers. In this study, identification of hypoxia regulated lncRNA with a b

There are over 400 hypoxic zones in the ocean worldwide. Both laboratory and field studies have shown that hypoxia causes endocrine disruption and reproductive impairments in vertebrates. More importantly, our recent study discovered that parental (F0) hypoxia exposure resulted in the transgenerational impairment of sperm quality in the F2 generation through the epigenetic regulation of germ cells. In the present study, we aim to test the hypothesis that the brain, as the major regulator of the brain-pituitary-gonad (BPG) axis, is also involved in the observed transgenerational effect. Using c

The severity of systemic meningococcal disease (SMD) correlates to plasma concentrations of LPS and IL-10, with the highest levels detected in non-survivors. Here, plasma from patients with SMD containing high and low concentrations of LPS were incubated with human monocytes before and after immunodepletion of IL-10 to study the effect of IL-10 on gene expression and cytokine release. Patient plasma containing IL-10 induced the expression of 1657 genes in human monocytes when compared with gene expression induced by low LPS plasma. After immunodepletion of IL-10, this number increased to 2260.

Transposable elements (TEs) can donate regulatory sequences that help to control the expression of human genes. The oncogene c-Myc is a promiscuous transcription factor that is thought to regulate the expression of hundreds of genes. We evaluated the contribution of TEs to the c-Myc regulatory network by searching for c-Myc binding sites derived from TEs and by analyzing the expression and function of target genes with nearby TE-derived c-Myc binding sites. There are thousands of TE sequences in the human genome that are bound by c-Myc. A conservative analysis indicated that 816-4564 of these

The complexity of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has made it difficult to examine its underlying mechanism. A gene microarray offers a solution to the complexity through a parallel analysis of most of the genes expressed in the brains from AD-transgenic mice. In our previous study, a total of 52 differentially expressed genes were identified in 18-month-old APPsw-transgenic mice compared to age-matched normal mice. We extended our work to better understand the relevant gene profiles from both early- and late-stage transgenic and normal mice. To accomplish this, cDNA microarray was used with the larg
