Epidemiology of foodborne diseases: a worldwide review.

Acute foodborne disease infections and intoxications are much more of a concern to governments and the food industry today than a few decades ago. Some of the factors that have led to this include the identification of new agents that have caused life-threatening conditions; the finding that traditional agents are being associated with foods that were of no concern previously: an increasing number of large outbreaks being reported; the impact of foodborne disease on children, the aging population and the immunocompromised; migrant populations demanding their traditional foods in the countries

Epidemiology of epilepsy in children.

The convulsive disorders are among the more frequently occurring neurologic disorders of childhood, affecting more than 4% of all children. The most frequently occurring disorder, febrile convulsions, shows wide geographic variation and is usually benign. Children with epilepsy (which affects about 1% of the population by age 20) generally have an excellent prognosis. The small proportion of patients whose epilepsy is not controlled after two years of treatment should be considered for alternative therapies.

Invasive streptococci.

Before the introduction of antibiotics, serious infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (Lancefield Group A streptococci) were common. Before World War II, this bacterium was responsible for as many as 50% of postpartum deaths and was the major cause of death in patients with burns. Also common were the sequelae of streptococcal infections-rheumatic fever and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. With the use of penicillin, however, Streptococcus pyogenes was believed to be virtually eliminated as a pathogen. The organism was consigned to the history books, but not for long. In the mid-19

HIV infection in the nineties.

By the year 2000 a cumulative global total of 30-40 million men, women and children are projected to have been infected with HIV. This will represent a three to four times increase of the present total. Currently, it is estimated that about 5000 persons are newly infected daily. Worldwide, the predominant and increasing mode of transmission is by heterosexual intercourse. Therefore, the number of infected women will equal that of men. Consequently, more infants will be infected by their mothers and more infants will be orphaned as their parents die of AIDS. By the end of the 1990s, over one mi

The epidemiology of preterm birth.

Secular trends in the prevalence of preterm birth and international comparisons of the rates of preterm birth are difficult to interpret because of differences, both formal and informal, in the registration of extremely preterm births. Accurate estimation of gestational age is another problem in the measurement of preterm birth. Preterm birth is heterogeneous in several ways. It is heterogeneous in terms of the extent to which the birth is preterm (20-27 weeks, 28-31 weeks or 32-36 weeks of gestation); in whether the birth was elective or spontaneous; and among spontaneous idiopathic preterm b

Policing hearts of darkness: aspects of the international sanitary conferences.

Internationalism became an important feature of medicine and medical science during the second half of the nineteenth century. Internationalism emerged in a climate of nationalism and the latter sometimes affected cooperation, especially after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, and the increased imperialism of the last third of the century. Against this backdrop, the International Sanitary Conferences, beginning with the first one in Paris in 1851, attempted to provide guidelines to control the spread of disease, especially cholera and plague. Quarantine was seen as a central feature of disea

Primary adult lactose intolerance protects against development of inflammatory bowel disease.

We have compared the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to the prevalence of lactose malabsorption (LM) in several countries. Our observations indicate that IBD is rare where LM is highly prevalent. The correlation between incidence of Crohn's disease and LM is -0.93, p less than 0.01, the correlation between incidence of ulcerative colitis and LM is -0.89, p less than 0.01. We, therefore, propose that LM results in the formation of volatile fatty acids which may inhibit multiplication of potentially pathogenic organisms.

Female genital mutilation in the world today: a global review.

Extensive research and field work have established that more than 74 million women and female children are mutilated by female genital operations in Africa alone. The operations are also practiced in many parts of the Middle East and, with Moslemization, were introduced into Indonesia and Malaysia where they are preformed at the present time in a less damaging form. This paper lists the countries where instances of excision and infibulation have been reported and includes case reports from Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Nigeria, Mali, Upper Volta, and Senegal. The ethical issues posed

Pediatric Health at the Crossroads of Climate Change, Food Insecurity, and Malnutrition.

Climate change (CC) poses a major global threat to the health of current and future generations, disproportionately affecting pediatric populations. Investigating the links between CC and pediatric diseases is crucial to inform research and prevention strategies aimed at breaking the transgenerational cycle of social inequalities. This narrative review explores the complex interactions between early-life exposures to CC, food insecurity, and malnutrition, and their impact on infectious and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in pediatric populations. Data reveal a concerning global scenario: half

Leave no one behind: Global Analysis on monitoring childhood vaccination timeliness and catch-up using data from the WHO/UNICEF joint reporting form on Immunization.

In the years following the Covid-19 pandemic, immunization programmes have increasingly focused on the capacity to conduct and monitor catch-up vaccination-for doses administered later than the recommended schedule. However, it is unclear whether information systems are able to monitor delayed vaccination. We analyzed WHO/UNICEF Joint Reporting Form data from 194 countries (2016-2022) to understand if systems for tracking delayed childhood vaccination are available and quantify catch-up doses of the first dose of a measles-containing vaccine (MCV1). For Latin American and Caribbean countries,

Global variations and socioeconomic inequalities in lifetime risk of lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal cancer: a population-based systematic analysis of GLOBOCAN 2022.

BACKGROUND: In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified poor oral health as a major health expenditure burden. While lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal cancers (LOCP) are an important group of diseases threatening oral health, there have been limited studies assessing global variations in lifetime risks (LR) according to socioeconomic inequalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We obtained national incidence and mortality estimates of LOCP in 185 countries from the GLOBOCAN database of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), corresponding all-cause mortality, population dat

International trends in biliary tract cancer-related mortality, 2000-2022: An observational study of the World Health Organization Mortality Database.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Biliary tract cancers (BTCs), including intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA), extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder cancer, and ampullary cancer, exhibit poor prognosis. This study examined temporal trends in mortality due to BTCs and their major subtypes at international, regional, and national levels. APPROACH AND RESULTS: This observational study used the World Health Organization mortality database. Locally weighted regression (LOESS) was used to produce a smoothed curve of long-term international and regional BTC and major subtype-related mortality rates in
