Two New Cases of Primary Microcephaly with Neuronal Migration Defect Caused by Truncating Mutations in the ASPM Gene.

Autosomal recessive primary microcephaly (MCPH) is a uncommon disorder due to congenital deficiency in the development of the cerebral corte … of the brain is preserved in cases with ASPM mutation, and a decrease in brain volume, particularly gray matter volume loss and a simplified gyral pattern are observed. Cortical migration defects are a very rare finding in patients with ASPM mutations. In the present study, we aimed to discuss the clinical and genetic findings in 2 cases with cortical dysplas …

Cognitive Reserve Is Not Associated With Hippocampal Microstructure in Older Adults Without Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Mean Diffusivity (MD) as measured by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can be used to detect microstructural alterations of the brain's gray matter (GM). A previous study found that higher education, which is a proxy for cognitive reserve (CR), was related to decreased hippocampal MD in middle-aged healthy adults, indicating decreased microstructural damage in more educated participants. Based on this study, we aimed at determining the role of hippocampal GM MD in the interaction of AD pathology and CR in older people without dementia. METHOD: We used a sample of 52 cognitively normal…

Refeeding is the cornerstone of treatment in anorexia nervosa (AN), a life-threatening eating disorder characterized by severe undernutritio … eight recovery.1 Furthermore, recent neuroimaging studies suggest that the widespread reductions of gray matter volume and cortical thickness in acutely underweight AN patients abate rapidly after refeeding.2 Although the first studies provided evidence for the relative safety of higher calorie refeeding, particularly in the refeeding syndrome, a rare but pos …

Focused Ultrasound for Noninvasive, Focal Pharmacologic Neurointervention.

A long-standing goal of translational neuroscience is the ability to noninvasively deliver therapeutic agents to specific brain regions with … iver small molecules to millimeter-sized structures including superficial cortical regions and deep gray matter regions within the brain without the need for blood-brain barrier opening. We also consider the safety and potential complications of these techniques, with attention to temporal acuity. Finally, we close with a discussion of different methods for m …

Structural brain changes in Ser129-phosphorylated alpha-synuclein rats based on voxel-based morphometry.

Parkinson's disease has become one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases. Pathological changes typically manifest following dopaminergic neuron loss in the substantia nigra and abnormal alpha-synuclein (α-syn) aggregation in the neurons. α-Syn is the major component of Lewy bodies. However, research pertaining to the spread of abnormal α-syn aggregations, which results in specific damage to the brain structure and function, is lacking. In the present study, full-length human α-syn fibrils were injected into the medial forebrain bundle of rats, with an experimental endpoint of 6 months.

Structural and Functional Alterations of the Temporal lobe in Schizophrenia: A Literature Review.

Schizophrenia is a severe chronic mental illness leading to social and occupational dysfunction. Our primary focus in this review article was to analyze further the structural and functional alterations of the temporal lobe in patients with schizophrenia, which might contribute to the associated manifestations we often see in this illness. Our goal was to see if there was any correlation between temporal lobe abnormalities, more specifically, alterations in brain volume and specific symptoms such as auditory and language processing, etc. There is a positive correlation between volume alteratio

[An autopsy case of elderly-onset herpes simplex encephalitis with acute respiratory failure caused by brainstem lesions].

An 89-year-old man was admitted because of persistent fever and impaired consciousness. On admission, his consciousness level was E3V3M4 according to the Glasgow Coma Scale. MRI of the brain showed high intensity lesions in the bilateral cingulate gyri. In the cerebrospinal fluid, both cell counts and glucose level were in the normal ranges. He had received antibiotics and intravenous isotonic saline. On the fifth day of hospitalization, blood examination revealed elevation of anti-herpes simplex virus (HSV) immunoglobulin M antibody, and herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) was diagnosed. Despit

Surgical Technique and Outcome of Extensive Frontal Lobectomy for Treatment of Intracable Non-lesional Frontal Lobe Epilepsy.

Although extensive frontal lobectomy (eFL) is a common surgical procedure for intractable frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), there have been very few reports regarding surgical techniques for eFL. This article provides step-by-step descriptions of our surgical technique for non-lesional FLE. Sixteen patients undergoing eFL were included in this study. The goals were to maximize gray matter removal, including the orbital gyrus and subcallosal area, and to spare the primary motor and premotor cortexes and anterior perforated substance. The eFL consists of three steps: (1) positioning, craniotomy, and …

Acute flaccid myelitis and enterovirus D68: lessons from the past and present.

Acute flaccid myelitis is characterized by the combination of acute flaccid paralysis and a spinal cord lesion largely restricted to the gray matter on magnetic resonance imaging. The term acute flaccid myelitis was introduced in 2014 after the upsurge of pediatric cases in the USA with enterovirus D68 infection. Since then, an increasing number of cases have been reported worldwide. Whereas the terminology is new, the clinical syndrome has been recognized in the past in association with several other neurotropic viruses such as poliovirus. Conclusion: This review presents the current knowledge…

Developmental Perceptual Impairments: Cases When Tone-Deafness and Prosopagnosia Co-occur.

Studies have shown subtle gray and white matter abnormalities in subjects with several developmental disorders including prosopagnosia, tone-deafness, and dyslexia. Correlational evidence suggests that tone-deafness and dyslexia tend to co-occur, suggesting a link between these two developmental disorders. However, it is not known whether tone-deafness can also be associated with other developmental disorders such as impaired face recognition or prosopagnosia. We addressed this question by assessing face perception abilities in a group of tone-deaf individuals and matched non-tone-deaf subject

Sleep-disordered breathing in epilepsy: epidemiology, mechanisms, and treatment.

Epilepsy is a group of neurological conditions in which there is a pathological and enduring predisposition to generate recurrent seizures. Evidence over the last few decades suggests that epilepsy may be associated with increased sleep-disordered breathing, which may contribute towards sleep fragmentation, daytime somnolence, reduced seizure control, and cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality. Chronic sleep-disordered breathing can result in loss of gray matter and cause deficits to memory and global cognitive function. Sleep-disordered breathing is a novel and independent predictor o…

Imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) of cortical lipids from preclinical to severe stages of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting millions of patients worldwide. Previous studies have demonstr … tion of different sulfatide lipid species from the earliest stages of the disease in both white and gray matter areas of the frontal cortex. Therefore, the decrease in sulfatides in cortical areas could be considered as a marker of the disease, but may also indicate neurochemical modifications related to the pathogenesis of the disease.
