Indirect immunofluorescence was used for determination of antibody in human cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis, mice infected with Leishmania tropica and guinea pigs infected with L. enriettii. Results indicated that antibody in mice is detectable 23 days after infection with L. tropica. The antibody titre correlates well with the extent of infection. Dingchuanning has been found to increase markedly the perfusion of isolated lung of guinea-pig. It may produce a relaxing effect on the smooth muscles of the isolated trachea, bronchus and lung strips of guinea-pigs, as well as a prominent protective effect on the bronchial asthma induced by inhalation of bronchoconstrictors in conscious guinea-pigs. It also has significant expectorant and antianaphylactic effects and helps to inhibit markedly the SRS-A release from lung tissues and to counteract directly the activity of SRS-A.

PURPOSE: High levels of ascorbic acid are known to be present in the aqueous humor of many diurnal species, whereas nocturnal animals have low concentrations of the compound. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the high concentration of aqueous ascorbate in diurnal animals protects the lens against ultraviolet (UV)-induced damage to the eye. Oral administration of nickel-chromium to guinea pigs by way of a fixed occlusal splint, or the incorporation of metallic powder or salts into the pelleted food, did not induce hypersensitivity to these metals. In addition, a subsequent attempt to immunize the pre-treated guinea pigs failed in most animals, whereas non-pre-treated guinea pigs became clearly hypersensitive. These results show that oral administration of nickel and chromium induced a state of (partial) tolerance to both metals.

The peptidergic innervation of arterial chemoreceptor organs (the rat carotid body and vagal paraganglia; guinea pig carotid body) was studied immunohistochemically. Carrageenin prevents the reaction of guinea-pig C′ with sensitized red blood cells, probably by a direct inactivation of the C′1. The anti-complementary effect of carrageenin is antagonized by protamine sulphate. Marked reduction of circulating C′ activity in guinea-pigs resulting from intravenous injection of carrageenin, does not alter their susceptibility to acute or protracted anaphylactic shock. The C′ activities of human, guinea-pig, rabbit, rat and monkey sera are all inhibited in vitro by carrageenin.
