Botanical extract combined with minoxidil improve hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia caused by p.G11R mutations: a case report.

PURPOSE: We aim to explore a potential treatment strategy for hair loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A male 6-year-old child was diagnosed with hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia 2 (HED2) caused by GJB6 (p.G11R) mutations. He presented at our clinic with diffuse thinning and fine and brittle hair since birth. Additionally, the child exhibited abnormal development of teeth, fingernails, and toenails. The condition of the child's hair had not improved significantly with age. He was treated with botanical extracts combined with Minoxidil. RESULTS: After one and a half months of treatment, the patient sho

Alopecia in Harlequin mutant mice is associated with reduced AIF protein levels and expression of retroviral elements.

We investigated the contribution of apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF), a key regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, in supporting hair growth. We report that pelage abnormalities developed during hair follicle (HF) morphogenesis in Harlequin (Hq) mutant mice. Fragility of the hair cortex was associated with decreased expression of genes encoding structural hair proteins, though key transcriptional regulators of HF development were expressed at normal levels. Notably, Aifm1 (R200 del) knockin males and Aifm1(R200 del)/Hq females showed minor hair defects, despite substantially reduced AIF levels.

Platelet-rich Plasma as a Potential Treatment for Noncicatricial Alopecias.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and alopecia areata (AA) are common hair loss disorders affecting both men and women. Despite available therapeutic options, search for new, more effective treatment is constant. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) could be effective in promoting hair growth: (1) To present PRP and its mechanism of action in promoting hair growth and (2) to evaluate its preparation methods and its therapeutic potential in noncicatrial alopecias in a systematic review. An international bibliography search, through five databases, was conducted to find articles regarding PRP's action on hair l

Functional expression of transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 in the mouse cochlea.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid 4, the Ca2+-permeable cation channel has been proposed as an osmosensitive and a mechanosensitive channel. We investigated functional expression of transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 in inner hair cells, outer hair cells, and spiral ganglion neurons of the mouse cochlea. Transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 mRNA and protein were expressed in inner hair cells, outer hair cells, and spiral ganglion neurons on the basis of the findings of reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, single-cell reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, a

Psychodermatoses in haemodialysis patients.

Unbiased genetic screens implicated a number of uncharacterized genes in hearing loss, suggesting some biological processes required for auditory function remain unexplored. Loss of Kiaa1024L/Minar2, a previously understudied gene, caused deafness in mice, but how it functioned in the hearing was unclear. Here, we show that disruption of kiaa1024L/minar2 causes hearing loss in the zebrafish. Defects in mechanotransduction, longer and thinner hair bundles, and enlarged apical lysosomes in hair cells are observed in the kiaa1024L/minar2 mutant. In cultured cells, Kiaa1024L/Minar2 is mainly local

Treatment of alopecia areata in C3H/HeJ mice with the topical immunosuppressant FK506 (Tacrolimus).

Alopecia areata-like hair loss has been observed in C3H/HeJ mice and can be defined as a tissue-restricted T cell mediated disease of the hair follicle. Because FK506 has been described as suppressing T cell mediated autoimmune diseases, we addressed the question whether topical treatment of C3H/HeJ mice with FK506 has a beneficial effect on alopecia areata (AA). For this purpose six C3H/HeJ mice with AA were treated topically with 0.1% FK506 ointment, four mice received the vehicle only. Four of six FK506-treated mice showed complete hair regrowth, whereas 1/4 vehicle-treated mice regrew hair

Impulse noise and continuous noise of equivalent frequency spectrum and total sound energy.

It has been proposed that impulse noise and continuous noise affect the inner ear differently and investigations have found impulse noise to be harmful to both the inner hair cells and the outer hair cells. Scanning electron microscopy and non-standard methods for statistical analysis have facilitated the evaluation of different types of morphological changes after exposure to various kinds of noise. Morphological differences were compared in groups of guinea pigs exposed to either impulse noise or continuous noise of equivalent duration, spectral content and energy. Functionally, the groups a

Trichoscopy in Trichotillomania - Monitoring Treatment Response.

Trichotillomania is nonscarring alopecia with recurrent pulling out of one's hair and repeated attempts to reduce hair pulling. Clinical improvement in the urge to pull out hairs in trichotillomania is often not quantifiable and based on unreliable history. Here, we present a case of trichotillomania with follow-up features on trichoscopy during treatment. By this, we propose trichoscopy as an objective tool to visualize clinical improvement in the urge to pull out hairs and assess treatment efficacy.

Structural and functional effects of acoustic exposure in goldfish: evidence for tonotopy in the teleost saccule.

BACKGROUND: Mammalian and avian auditory hair cells display tonotopic mapping of frequency along the length of the cochlea and basilar papilla. It is not known whether the auditory hair cells of fishes possess a similar tonotopic organization in the saccule, which is thought to be the primary auditory receptor in teleosts. To investigate this question, we determined the location of hair cell damage in the saccules of goldfish (Carassius auratus) following exposure to specific frequencies. Subjects were divided into six groups of six fish each (five treatment groups plus control). The treatment

Occipital Hairline: A forgotten area.

Hair restoration surgery is one of the fascinating fields of modern day cosmetic surgery. A good hair transplant is characterized by a naturalness in terms of strategic distribution of hair. A very important point which is very rarely taken care is the "posterior or occipital" hairline. It is formed by the posterior 1 cm of hair which are placed on the vertex or crown and constitute the part which is normally hidden by the long hair. Many surgeons while creating the slits in the recipient area forget this equally important point. And make the slits in the lines. As the care is taken while crea

A novel treatment strategy for eyebrow transplantation in an ectodermal dysplasia patient.

BACKGROUND: Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a hereditary syndrome which affects the ectodermal layer and thus appendages originating from this layer like hair, teeth, and sweet glands. The hairs of the scalp and eyebrows are sparse and broken and sometimes absent in ED patients. We reported a case of ED who underwent successful hair transplantation for her eyebrows. CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old female with previously known Ed referred to our clinic because of absent lateral eyebrow hairs. She also had hypodontia (she lacked incisor teeth) and hypohydrosis. We designed a hair transplantation proced

Non-scarring patchy alopecia in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus differs from that of alopecia areata.

BACKGROUND: Non-scaring patchy alopecia associated with systematic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is sometimes mis-diagnosed as alopecia areata (AA). OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to differentiate non-scarring patchy SLE alopecia features from patchy AA. METHODS: Clinical, dermatoscopic and histopathological data from 21 SLE patients with patchy alopecia were compared with data from 21 patients with patchy AA. RESULTS: Incomplete alopecia was common in SLE alopecia patches, while AA patches exhibited complete alopecia. Exclamation-mark hairs, black dots, broken hair and yellow dots were common to AA,

Efficacy, Safety, and Tolerability of a Wearable Electrotrichogenic Device in Men with Androgenetic Alopecia: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Sham-Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), the most common form of hereditary hair loss, is highly prevalent and commonly requires long-term, consistent treatment. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of a wearable electrotrichogenic (ETG) device (niostem) compared with a sham device in men with AGA. METHODS: This single-center, randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial enrolled 81 men (18-55 years of age; Norwood-Hamilton scale II-VI) assigned to the active ETG or sham group in a 5:3 ratio. Participants used the assigned device 30 m

Hairy intraoral flap--an unusual indication for laser epilation: a series of 5 cases and review of the literature.

A variety of the flaps used to reconstruct defects of the head and neck region following surgery for malignant disease contain hair follicles that may result in unwanted hair growth. This can cause significant distress to the patients in a variety of ways. We report 5 cases of significant intraoral hair growth of which 4 cases were successfully managed with long-pulsed alexandrite laser. One patient was not treated due to technical difficulties. We review the literature on the management of hair growth on intraoral flaps.

Eyebrow reconstruction using composite graft and microsurgical transplant.

The pivotal role that eyebrows play in facial expression and aesthetics is widely accepted, along with the difficulties faced by surgeons in reconstructing defects in this area. The case study presented demonstrates reconstruction of a traumatic eyebrow defect using a post-auricular composite graft in combination with a microfollicular hair transplant technique. The advantage of the combined approach is discussed with reference to the fine tuning of the adjoining areas between reconstructed and undamaged hair-bearing regions. The advantages of this technique in control of the direction of hair

Regulation of melanocyte stem cells in the pigmentation of skin and its appendages: Biological patterning and therapeutic potentials.

Skin evolves essential appendages and indispensable types of cells that synergistically insulate the body from environmental insults. Residing in the specific regions in the skin such as epidermis, dermis and hair follicle, melanocytes perform an array of vital functions including defending the ultraviolet radiation and diversifying animal appearance. As one of the adult stem cells, melanocyte stem cells in the hair follicle bulge niche can proliferate, differentiate and keep quiescence to control and coordinate tissue homeostasis, repair and regeneration. In synchrony with hair follicle stem

Preventive effects of cedrol against alopecia in cyclophosphamide-treated mice.

Although numerous hypotheses have been proposed to prevent chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA), effective pharmaceuticals have yet to be developed. In our study, the back hairs of C57BL/6 mice were factitiously removed. These mice were then treated with cedrol or minoxidil daily. Mice with early-stage anagen VI hair follicles were treated with cyclophosphamide (CYP, 125mg/kg) to induce alopecia. The CYP-damaged hair follicles were observed and quantified by using a digital photomicrograph. The results demonstrated that the minoxidil-treated mice suffered from complete alopecia similar to the m

Defining pseudofolliculitis barbae in 2001: a review of the literature and current trends.

Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) is a chronic inflammatory and potentially disfiguring condition most often seen in men and women of African American and Hispanic origin who have tightly curled hair and who shave or tweeze hairs frequently. The etiology is multifactorial. The shape of the hair follicle, hair cuticle, and the direction of hair growth each play a role in the inflammatory response once the hair is shaven or plucked and left to grow. This reaction often produces painful, pruritic, and sometimes hyperpigmented papules in the beard distribution. The result is an unappealing cosmetic

Immunohistological evaluation of alopecia areata treated with squaric acid dibutylester (SADBE).

A total of 19 patients with alopecia areata volunteered for serial biopsies of the scalp skin during SADBE treatment. Regrowth of terminal hair was seen in 12 of the 19 patients on the side of the scalp treated with SADBE for a minimum of four months, but not on a control side treated with sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). Immunocompetent cells were characterized with ANAE staining and monoclonal antibodies in biopsy specimen showing marked peribulbar and perivascular inflammatory cell infiltrates. Inflammatory cell subclasses were repeatedly evaluated during SADBE treatment. No specific alteratio
