Porous scaffold hydroxyapatite from sand lobster shells (Panulirus homarus) using polyethylene oxide/chitosan as polymeric porogen for bone tissue engineering.

The hydroxyapatite (HAp; Ca10 (PO4 )6 (OH)2 )) has good biocompatibility, bioactivity, and osteoconductivity as a bone implant because the main inorganic mineral of human bone is HAp. The use of scaffold HAp from biogenic resources that contain high calcium and polymer as a pore forming agent to support bone growth is a longstanding area of interest. In this study, porous scaffolds based on HAp were synthesized from sand lobster (SL; Panulirus homarus) shells as a source of calcium using the porogen leaching method with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and chitosan (Chs) as polymeric porogen. The pres

Matrix metalloproteinase 9 a potential major player connecting atherosclerosis and osteoporosis in high fat diet fed rats.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) represent one of the major sequelae of obesity. On the other hand, the relationship between bone diseases and obesity remains unclear. An increasing number of biological and epidemiological studies suggest the presence of a link between atherosclerosis and osteoporosis, however, the precise molecular pathways underlying this close association remain poorly understood. The present work thus aimed to study Matrix Metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), as a proposed link between atherosclerosis and osteoporosis in high fat diet fed rats. METHODS AND FINDINGS: 40 r

Cancellous bone allograft is comparable to fibular strut allograft for augmentation in three- or four-part proximal humeral fractures.

BACKGROUND: Bone grafts have been used for augmentation and improving stability of reduced fractures in proximal humeral fractures. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical and radiological outcomes after the use of cancellous bone allografts (CAs) for augmentation in 3- or 4-part proximal humeral fractures, and compare with fibular strut allografts (FAs). METHODS: Between November 2016 and February 2018, 55 patients, followed for at least 1 year, with 3- or 4-part proximal humeral fractures fixed with locking plates were included and grouped according to the type of allograft bone u

Efficacy of teriparatide in the treatment of nontraumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head: a retrospective comparative study with alendronate.

BACKGROUND: Collapse of the femoral head associated with nontraumatic osteonecrosis (NOFH) is one of the most common causes of disability in young adult patients. Excessive bone resorption by osteoclast coincident with the suppression of osteogenesis are believed to be responsible for collapse progression. Alendronate that inhibits bone resorption by inducing osteoclast apoptosis has been traditionally used for treating NOFH; however, several reports documented serious complications by the use of this drug. On the other hand, teriparatide activates osteoblasts leading to an overall increase in

Osteoblastic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells in Bruck Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) (OMIM %259450) is a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders characterized by increased bone fragility, with clinical severity ranging from mild to lethal. The majority of OI cases are caused by mutations in COL1A1 or COL1A2. Bruck Syndrome (BS) is a further recessively-inherited OI-like phenotype in which bone fragility is associated with the unusual finding of pterygia and contractures of the large joints. Notably, several studies have failed to show any abnormalities in the biosynthesis of collagen 1 in BS patientes. Evidence was obtained for a spe

Clinical outcomes of corrective osteotomy for distal radial malunion: a review of opening and closing-wedge techniques.

BACKGROUND: Radial corrective osteotomy is an established but challenging treatment for distal radial malunion. There is ongoing discussion over whether an opening or closing-wedge osteotomy should be employed. The purpose of the present study was to retrospectively compare the clinical and radiographic results of conventional opening-wedge osteotomy with those of our closing-wedge technique. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated forty-two patients with extra-articular distal radial malunion who were managed with corrective osteotomy and were followed for a minimum of one year. Twenty-two pat

Periodontal disease and hypertriglyceridemia in Japanese subjects: potential association with enhanced lipolysis.

Although periodontal disease may be associated with increased risk for atherosclerosis, the mechanism by which the disease causes atherosclerosis is still unknown. The candidates contributing to atherosclerosis in periodontal disease include low-grade inflammation such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and insulin resistance. A previous study demonstrated that periodontal therapy leads to an improvement in CRP as well as insulin resistance, indicating the relationship between periodontal disease and low-grade inflammation or insulin resistance. On the other hand, we previously demonstrated that seru

[Palliative therapy in cancer. 4. Palliation of the symptoms from a malignant tumor. (2)].

Patients suffering from malignant disease will probably develop some metabolic abnormality of electrolytes. Hypernatremia is defined as an elevation of serum natrium over 150 mEq/l and caused by decrease of water intake, low level of ADH secretion and impaired response of kidney to ADH. Hyponatremia below 135 mEq/l of serum natrium is caused by SI-DAH, sick cell syndrome and increased loss of natrium from the kidney. On the other hand, hyperkalemia is defined as an elevation of serum kalium over 5.0 mEq/l and caused by acute tumor cell lysis syndrome, adrenal and renal insufficiency. Hypokalem

EIF4A3 deficient human iPSCs and mouse models demonstrate neural crest defects that underlie Richieri-Costa-Pereira syndrome.

Biallelic loss-of-function mutations in the RNA-binding protein EIF4A3 cause Richieri-Costa-Pereira syndrome (RCPS), an autosomal recessive condition mainly characterized by craniofacial and limb malformations. However, the pathogenic cellular mechanisms responsible for this syndrome are entirely unknown. Here, we used two complementary approaches, patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and conditional Eif4a3 mouse models, to demonstrate that defective neural crest cell (NCC) development explains RCPS craniofacial abnormalities. RCPS iNCCs have decreased migratory capacity, a d

Locked volar plating for unstable distal radial fractures: clinical and radiological outcomes.

We studied 40 patients treated with locked volar plates for unstable distal radial fractures. Outcome was assessed at a mean of 59 weeks, both radiologically and functionally using the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire, range of motion and grip strength. The complication rate in our series was 48%. In 11 cases, screw penetration into the radiocarpal joint occurred as a consequence of postoperative collapse. Of these, 25% had malunited and 12.5% ruptured their extensor pollicus longus (EPL) tendon. Functionally, when compared with the contralateral side, 74% of exten

On-table reconstruction of comminuted fractures of the radial head.

The most widely accepted treatment for comminuted fractures of the radial head is either the excision or open reduction and internal fixation. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the value of an 'on-table' reconstruction technique in severely comminuted fractures of the radial head. In this study, two patients with a Mason type-III and four patients with a Mason type-IV radial-head fracture were treated with 'on-table' reconstruction and fixation using low-profile mini-plates. After a mean follow-up of 112 months (47-154 months), the mean elbow motion was 0-6-141 degrees extension

[Dorsal capsulodesis versus triscaphe arthrodesis in patients with scapholunate dissociation. Do the results depend on the diagnosis or the operation?].

BACKGROUND: Dorsal capsulodesis and triscaphe arthrodesis are possible treatment modalities for patients with scapholunate dissociation. In light of overlapping indications for either operation for patients with carpal instability, it is important to compare the postoperative results. METHODS: From 1998 until 2002, we operated on 87 patients suffering from scapholunate dissociation. 52 patients were treated by dorsal capsulodesis after R. Berger and 35 patients were treated by triscaphe arthrodesis as published by Watson. Of these 87 patients, we managed to follow-up 77 patients (47 dorsal ca

Mitophagy at the intersection of ferroptosis and cuproptosis in osteosarcoma: Molecular interactions and therapeutic implications.

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone tumor in adolescents and young adults. Its pronounced aggressiveness, metabolic reprogramming features, and the development of acquired resistance to chemotherapy severely limit the long-term efficacy of current therapeutic strategies. In recent years, the concept of metal ion-dependent regulated cell death has provided a novel theoretical framework for understanding cell fate regulation in osteosarcoma. Among these mechanisms, ferroptosis and cuproptosis are characterized by iron homeostasis-driven uncontrolled lipid peroxidation and copp
