The gendered health impacts of climate change on smallholder women farmers in Mhondoro Ngezi, Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Climate change poses significant threats to the livelihoods, health, and overall well-being of smallholder women farmers globally. In Mhondoro Ngezi, where agricultural production is predominantly rain-fed, high temperatures, recurrent droughts, and erratic rainfall patterns have intensified women's vulnerability to climate-induced health risks. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the gendered health impacts of climate change on women farmers and explored how these challenges intersect with broader socio-economic inequalities. METHODOLOGY: The research employed the Q methodology to id

Climate change and child health: The growing burden of climate-related adverse health outcomes.

Climate change is increasingly recognized not only as an environmental issue but also as a major public health threat, becoming more evident through the rising frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Immediate exposure to climate-related hazards-such as extreme heat, wildfires, storms, and floods-results in direct health impacts, while indirect effects emerge through ecosystem disruptions and socioeconomic shifts. Climate change can introduce or intensify health risks in regions that were previously unaffected. Effective monitoring of climate-related health developments enables publ

The impacts of donor transitions on health systems in middle-income countries: a scoping review.

As countries graduate from low-income to middle-income status, many face losses in development assistance for health and must 'transition' to greater domestic funding of their health response. If improperly managed, donor transitions in middle-income countries (MICs) could present significant challenges to global health progress. No prior knowledge synthesis has comprehensively surveyed how donor transitions can affect health systems in MICs. We conducted a scoping review using a structured search strategy across five academic databases and 37 global health donor and think tank websites for li

A qualitative study on barriers to utilisation of institutional delivery services in Moroto and Napak districts, Uganda: implications for programming.

BACKGROUND: Skilled attendance at delivery is critical in prevention of maternal deaths. However, many women in low- and middle-income countries still deliver without skilled assistance. This study was carried out to identify perceived barriers to utilisation of institutional delivery in two districts in Karamoja, Uganda. METHODS: Data were collected through participatory rural appraisal (PRA) with 887 participants (459 women and 428 men) in 20 villages in Moroto and Napak districts. Data were analysed using deductive content analysis. Notes taken during PRA session were edited, triangulated

Integrating injury and violence prevention content into a tribal college public health curricula: a collaboration with Diné College, Indian Health Service Injury Prevention Programme and Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy.

Injuries disproportionately affect American Indian communities, yet few efforts focus on training students or building workforce capacity in injury and violence prevention (IVP) within these communities. To address this gap, a collaborative planning team from Diné College, Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, and Indian Health Service Injury Prevention Programme met biweekly during the 2023-2025 academic years to integrate IVP into undergraduate public health training. The collaboration incorporated IVP competencies into public health courses and supported student practicum expe

Prenatal alcohol exposure and physical health outcomes in adolescence and adulthood: A systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (PAE) has been linked to an increased risk of long-term adverse physical health outcomes. However, research on PAE has thus far primarily focused on neurobehavioural outcomes. To address this evidence gap, we conducted a systematic scoping review to synthesise the evidence on PAE-related adverse physical health impacts. METHODS: Eligible publications were peer-reviewed articles that explored the relationship between PAE and physical health outcomes in adolescents and adults. We followed the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping manual for evidence synthesis, an

Complex Health Needs in Hurricane-Affected Youth and Their Families: Barriers, Vulnerabilities, and Mental Health Outcomes.

Youth with complex health needs (CHNs; e.g., requiring daily assistance or equipment for care) and their parents face heightened vulnerabilities during natural disasters, potentially leading to poorer mental health outcomes compared to those without CHNs. However, limited research has focused on this group's disaster-related experiences and their impact on mental health outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the disaster experiences, perceptions, and mental health outcomes of youth with CHNs and their parents' post-hurricane and to evaluate the unique influence of CHN- and disaster-related

A Survey on the Prevalence of Low Back Pain and the Disability in Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) in Panvel Division of Maharashtra.

BACKGROUND: People with low back pain (LBP) frequently experience diminished productivity. Long-term, poor physical health, mental health issues, repetitive lifting of heavy objects, and prolonged movement repetition are all thought to be contributing factors to low back pain. An Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) is a woman who serves as a vital liaison between public health and the local community. ASHA provides health, birth planning, safe childbirth, and breastfeeding counseling to rural women and conducts civil registration. The study seeks to determine the substantial occurrence of

Examining the non-linear association between ambient temperature and mental health of elderly adults in the community: evidence from Guangzhou, China.

The association between ambient temperature and mental health has been explored previously. However, research on the psychological effect of temperature in vulnerable groups and neighborhood scales have been scarce. Based on the survey and temperature data collected from 20 neighborhoods in Guangzhou, China, this study estimated the association between ambient temperature and community mental health among the elderly, adopting a fixed-effects methodology. According to this empirical analysis, compared to a comfortable temperature range of 20℃-25℃, measures of worse mental health among elderly

Birth Prevalence of Sickle Cell Disease and County-Level Social Vulnerability - Sickle Cell Data Collection Program, 11 States, 2016-2020.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) remains a public health priority in the United States because of its association with complex health needs, reduced life expectancy, lifelong disabilities, and high cost of care. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted to calculate the crude and race-specific birth prevalence for SCD using state newborn screening program records during 2016-2020 from 11 Sickle Cell Data Collection program states. The percentage distribution of birth mother residence within Social Vulnerability Index quartiles was derived. Among 3,305 newborns with confirmed SCD (including 57% with ho

Health effects inflicted by chronic low-level arsenic contamination in groundwater: A global public health challenge.

Groundwater arsenic (As) contamination is a global public health concern. The high level of As exposure (100-1000 μg/L or even higher) through groundwater has been frequently associated with serious public health hazards, e.g., skin disorders, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory problems, complications of gastrointestinal tract, liver and splenic ailments, kidney and bladder disorders, reproductive failure, neurotoxicity and cancer. However, reviews on low-level As exposure and the imperative health effects are far less documented. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Env

Integrating Preexposure Prophylaxis for Human Immunodeficiency Virus Prevention Into Women's Health Care in the United States.

Women comprise one in five new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnoses in the United States. Trials and implementation projects demonstrate preexposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention is effective in women. Preexposure prophylaxis is a method of preventing HIV acquisition by having an HIV-negative individual take antiretroviral medication before exposure. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved daily oral tenofovir disoproxil fumarate coformulated with emtricitabine as preexposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention in 2012. Preexposure prophylaxis is highly dependent on adherence for ef

Do unmet needs differ geographically for children with special health care needs?

The purpose of this study was to identify geographic differences in health indicators for children with special health care needs (CSHCN). It was hypothesized that geographic differences in unmet health care needs exist among CSHCN by region in the United States. Data were obtained from the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs, 2005-2006. Nine variables representing unmet needs were analyzed by geographic region. The region with the highest percent of unmet needs was identified for each service. Logistic regression was utilized to determine differences by region after con

Social inequalities resulting from health risks related to ambient air quality--A European review.

BACKGROUND: Environmental nuisances, including ambient air pollution, are thought to contribute to social inequalities in health. There are two major mechanisms, which may act independently or synergistically, through which air pollution may play this role. Disadvantaged groups are recognized as being more often exposed to air pollution (differential exposure) and may also be more susceptible to the resultant health effects (differential susceptibility). METHOD: European research articles were obtained through a literature search in the Medline database using keywords 'Socioeconomic Factors,

IUD-related knowledge, attitudes and practices among Navajo Area Indian Health Service providers.

CONTEXT: The IUD once accounted for about half of contraceptive use among Navajo women but is now little used in this population, which has a high rate of unintended pregnancy. Identifying barriers to use--including those stemming from providers' IUD-related knowledge, attitudes and practices--could help expand use of the method. METHODS: In 2000, 107 Navajo Area Indian Health Service providers who offer contraceptive services completed a mailed survey. Responses of women's health providers and other types of providers were compared, using the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel method. RESULTS: Overall
