A meta-analysis of 8 randomized trials (1792 patients, 2947 patient-years of follow-up) showed that acyclovir (> or = 3200 mg/day) offered a significant survival benefit (P = .006 by log-rank test) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The treatment effect did not vary significantly in patient subgroups of different CD4 cell counts, hemoglobin levels, age, race, and sex, and with or without AIDS diagnosis. We studied possible genomic changes occurring in herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) during long-term cell culture which served as a model system for persistence and latency studies as introduced earlier. Thirty autopsies performed on infants and children with HIV infection and/or AIDS were reviewed for the presence and type of infection. Twenty-six (87%) demonstrated evidence of infection in addition to HIV at the time of postmortem examination. Pathogenic bacterial infectious were the most frequently encountered, seen in 15 of the cases. Nine of the 15 (60%) were due to gram-negative rods, most commonly Pseudomonas aeruginosa. To better understand the clinical manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in women in Louisiana, we conducted a retrospective review of the records of HIV-infected women who presented to the largest HIV outpatient clinic in Louisiana as well as to a tertiary care university hospital in New Orleans between January 1987 and December 1991. Mammalian U3 small nucleolar RNA promoters possess a highly conserved distal sequence element (DSE) consisting of CCAAT and octamer motifs separated by 11-12 base pairs. We show here that both motifs are required for transcription of a rat U3D gene in Xenopus oocytes. Leukoregulin is a naturally occurring immunologic cytokine which increases membrane permeability and drug uptake in tumor cells but not in normal cells. In this paper we show that leukoregulin also increases membrane permeability of Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)-infected cells. Our purpose was to investigate possible interrelations between antibody titers against seven viruses (measles, rubella, herpes simplex, mumps, varicella-zoster, coronavirus, cytomegalovirus), HLA-class II antigens, and immunoglobulin Gm allotypes in multiple sclerosis (MS). We studied 57 MS patients and 59 controls with similar age and sex distributions. In MS patients, we found the classical increased frequency of HLA-DR2, HLA-DQw1 and also an excess of Gm (3; +/- 23; 5*). Mumps antibody levels were higher in MS patients than in controls; elevation was not significant for measles antibodies.

To determine whether complicated febrile seizures occur more often in children with a proven viral infection, we performed viral examinations on 144 children with febrile convulsions, of whom 112 had simple and 32 had complicated seizures. Corneal neovascularization (CNV) can cause significant visual loss because of the scarring and lipid deposition that frequently accompany it. In addition, penetrating keratoplasty in a vascularized recipient carries a significant risk of failure from allograft rejection. Between December 1984 and December 1986, a microplate technique was adopted for isolation of viruses from infants and children with acute respiratory infections.
