The history of female genital tract malformation classifications and proposal of an updated system.

BACKGROUND: A correct classification of malformations of the female genital tract is essential to prevent unnecessary and inadequate surgical operations and to compare reproductive results. An ideal classification system should be based on aetiopathogenesis and should suggest the appropriate therapeutic strategy. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of relevant articles found in PubMed, Scopus, Scirus and ISI webknowledge, and analysis of historical collections of 'female genital malformations' and 'classifications'. Of 124 full-text articles assessed for eligibility, 64 were included be

Hypoplasia of the trapezius and history of ipsilateral transient neonatal brachial plexus palsy.

We present two children with hypoplasia of the left trapezius muscle and a history of ipsilateral transient neonatal brachial plexus palsy without documented trapezius weakness. Magnetic resonance imaging in these patients with unilateral left hypoplasia of the trapezius revealed decreased muscles in the left side of the neck and left supraclavicular region on coronal views, decreased muscle mass between the left splenius capitis muscle and the subcutaneous tissue at the level of the neck on axial views, and decreased size of the left paraspinal region on sagittal views. Three possibilities ca

Spurious case of XX maleness in a patient with a history of Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To alert endocrinologists about the potential for karyotype confusion in patients who have undergone bone marrow transplantation. METHODS: Clinical, laboratory, and imaging data are reported on a young adult male patient who initially presented because of concerns about short stature. RESULTS: An 18-year-old fully virilized male patient with a history of Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome had undergone successful bone marrow transplantation in infancy. The donor was his older sister. Many years later, he underwent evaluation because of short stature and was found to have a 46, XX karyotype.

History of knee injuries and knee osteoarthritis: a meta-analysis of observational studies.

OBJECTIVES: Although knee injury has been implicated as a risk factor for the development of knee osteoarthritis (OA), there is great disparity in the magnitude of quantifiable risk. Our aim was to systematically review the relationship between history of knee injuries and knee OA. METHODS: Six electronic databases were searched between August and October 2010. Relative risk estimates or odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were extracted or calculated from observational studies meeting the inclusion criteria. Publication bias was determined using funnel plot and the Egger's

From re-emergence to hyperendemicity: the natural history of the dengue epidemic in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: dengue virus (DENV) was reintroduced into Brazil in 1986 and by 1995 it had spread throughout the country. In 2007 the number of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases more than doubled and a shift in the age distribution was reported. While previously the majority of DHF cases occurred among adults, in 2007 53% of cases occurred in children under 15 years old. The reasons for this shift have not been determined. METHODS AND FINDINGS: age stratified cross-sectional seroepidemiologic survey conducted in Recife, Brazil in 2006. Serostatus was determined by ELISA based detection of Den

Higher prevalence of periodic limb movements of sleep in patients with history of stroke.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The association between obstructive sleep apnea and stroke is well established. Less is known about the relationship between stroke and periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS). This study sought to assess the frequency of PLMS in patients with a history of stroke. METHODS: We reviewed the medical and polysomnographic records of 40 patients with a history of stroke and 40 control patients matched for age, sex, and risk factors. RESULTS: 19 patients with a history of stroke (47.5%) and 5 control patients (12.5%) had a PLMS index > 5/h (p < 0.001). The average PLMS index was a

The prevalence and natural history of dominant optic atrophy due to OPA1 mutations.

PURPOSE: Autosomal dominant optic atrophy (DOA) is a major cause of visual impairment in young adults that is characterized by selective retinal ganglion cell loss. To define the prevalence and natural history of this optic nerve disorder, we performed a population-based epidemiologic and molecular study of presumed DOA cases in the north of England. DESIGN: Case series. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-six affected probands with a clinical diagnosis of DOA were identified from our neuro-ophthalmology and neurogenetics database. METHODS: OPA1 genetic testing was performed using a polymerase chain reac

Psychological processes and histories associated with nonepileptic versus epileptic seizure presentations.

Nonepileptic seizures (NES) provide a clinical challenge as the mechanisms involved remain uncertain. The present study compares 27 participants with confirmed NES presentations with 39 individuals with epileptic seizure (ES) presentations only, on indices of psychopathology, trauma history, dissociative propensity, and attachment style. Psychopathology and dissociation were found to be significantly elevated in the NES group compared with the ES group. No differences were found between groups in terms of trauma history and attachment style. However, trauma history did correlate significantly

Prevalence of a history of skin cancer in 2007: results of an incidence-based model.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the 2007 person prevalence of common types of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), or both, in the United States using an incidence-based mathematical model; and to compare the prevalence of skin cancer with that of other common cancers. DESIGN: I developed a mathematical model to estimate the prevalence of NMSC in the United States in 2007. This model used age-specific incidence data adjusted to reflect changes in incidence from 1957 to 2006, the age distribution of the population from 1957 to 2006, and the like

Family history of cancer and cancer risks in women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations.

Women who carry a deleterious mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 have high lifetime risks of breast and ovarian cancers. However, the influence of a family history of these cancers on these risks in women with BRCA mutations is unclear. We calculated cancer incidence rates for a multinational cohort comprising 3011 women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations who were followed up for a mean of 3.9 years, during which time 243 incident breast or ovarian cancers were recorded. The 10-year cumulative risks of breast cancer were 18.1% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 13.3% to 22.8%) for women with a BRCA1 mutation

Excessive drinking and history of unemployment and cohabitation in Danish men born in 1953.

BACKGROUND: Few studies exist on social inequality of excessive drinking in Denmark and differences seem to be less pronounced than in other European countries. The aims of this study were to investigate how history of employment and cohabitation is associated with excessive drinking and to study interaction between both. METHODS: Birth-cohort study of 6112 Danish men born in 1953 with follow-up in 2004 on excessive drinking at age 51 years. RESULTS: Excessive drinking (between 22 and 35 units of alcohol per week) differed little depending on history of unemployment and cohabitation. Risk of

Physical inactivity and pain in older men and women with hip fracture history.

Hip fracture patients often suffer from pain for several months after surgery. This may lead to physical inactivity and subsequent mobility limitation and disability. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between severe musculoskeletal pain and the level of physical activity in older people with a history of hip fracture. Data were collected from 60- to 85-year-old (n = 78) community-dwelling people, 0.7-7.5 years after hip fracture. Physical activity was assessed with the Yale Physical Activity Survey (YPAS). According to the YPAS summary index distribution, the partici

Sleep disorders and the natural history of Parkinson's disease: the contribution of epidemiological studies.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders (SD) are one of the most frequent non-motor manifestations of Parkinson's disease (PD). Recent studies showed that SD may precede the onset of PD. OBJECTIVES: We reviewed current literature concerning 1) the incidence of PD among subjects with SD; and 2) the occurrence and possible clinical correlations of SD during the course of PD. METHODS: A Medline search found 17 longitudinal studies. RESULTS: The incidence of PD among patients with rapid eye-movement sleep behavioural disorders ranged from 20% to 65% of cases, within a wide interval of time (range: 2.2-13.3

Thoracoabdominal situs: a practical approach accompanied by a short history of descriptive terms.

Classification systems for thoracoabdominal situs have been the subject of numerous reports, yet confusion persists. This essay presents an abbreviated historical review of the currently used terms, briefly discusses some of the nomenclature controversies, and proposes a classification system that more closely adheres to the etymology of the descriptors, especially "heterotaxy."
