[Epidemiology and clinical features of acute hepatitis A: from the domestic perspective].

Acute viral hepatitis A has recently become a major public health problem in Korea, and the incidence of symptomatic hepatitis A is growing rapidly. With improvements in socioeconomic conditions and environmental hygiene, the chances of exposure to hepatitis A virus (HAV) during childhood have decreased and, in turn, the proportion of young adults with positive anti-HAV has significantly decreased. This has led to the incidence of symptomatic acute hepatitis A increasing since the late 1990s. The incidence of serious complications including fulminant hepatic failure and acute kidney injury has

Early diagnosis and surgical treatment of the lower labial frenum in infancy: a case report.

The lower labial frenum attached to the free gingival margin can promote local tension, resulting in tissue ischemia, promoting the development of gingival recession, as well as complicating oral hygiene, resulting in a local biofilm accumulation and chronic inflammation. In such cases, periodontal surgery is recommended and the local anatomic characteristics will be improved as early as school age. In this case report, a 7 years old patient had the lower labial frenum repositioned. After this procedure, the suture of the mucosa to the periosteum was performed around the surgical wound to prov

German science and black racism--roots of the Nazi Holocaust.

The Nazi's cornerstone precept of "racial hygiene" gave birth to their policy of "racial cleansing" that led to the murders of millions. It was developed by German physicians and scientists in the late 19th century and is rooted in the period's Social Darwinism that placed blacks at the bottom of the racial ladder. This program was first manifested in the near-extermination of the African Herero people during the German colonial period. After WWI, the fear among the German populace that occupying African troops and their Afro-German children would lead to "bastardization" of the German people

[Chronic blepharitis. Pathogenesis, clinical features, and therapy].

Chronic blepharitis is one of the most common diseases of the eyelids, but surprisingly, it is not often recognized. Frequently, a skin disease such as seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, or acne rosacea is the underlying cause of chronic blepharitis. Bacterial pathological lipase, cholesterylesterase production, and bacterial lipopolysaccharides are pathogenetically relevant. Only rarely do genuine bacterial infections play a role. Collarettes occur at the base of the eye lashes, and the Meibomian glands show either abundant fluid secretion or inspissated secretion with obstruction of t

Acanthamoeba keratitis related to cosmetic contact lenses.

We report a rare case of Acanthamoeba keratitis related to cosmetic contact lenses in both eyes. A 17-year-old girl with a history of wearing cosmetic contact lenses presented with keratitis. She purchased cosmetic contact lenses via the Internet, and followed a contact lens care system irregularly, occasionally using tap water. Cell culture was performed on samples collected from a corneal scraping, the contact lenses and the storage cases. The isolated organism was Acanthamoeba. The patient was treated with polyhexamethylene biguanide and chlorhexidine for 3 months, and recovered with normal

Results of an Internet survey of myoelectric prosthetic hand users.

The results of a survey of 54 persons with upper limb amputations who anonymously completed a questionnaire on an Internet homepage are presented. The survey ran for four years and the participants were divided into groups of females, males, and children. It was found that the most individuals employ their myoelectric hand prosthesis for 8 hours or more. However, the survey also revealed a high level of dissatisfaction with the weight and the grasping speed of the devices. Activities for which prostheses should be useful were stated to include handicrafts, personal hygiene, using cutlery, oper

Prevention and treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis.

Infection with Toxoplasma gondii is transmitted to man by infected meat or meat products and by contact with soil or surface water. In theory, prevention by hygienic measures is possible, but this has never been proved to work in practice. Therefore, pre- and postnatal screening has been implemented in several countries aiming at early diagnosis. However, data on the effect of treatment are limited and no randomized, controlled trials have been performed. The risk of T. gondii infection in Europe is declining and studies using historical controls from earlier decades cannot be used for decisio

[Finding of Strongyloides stercoralis infection, 25 years after leaving the endemic area, upon corticotherapy for ocular trauma].

In the field of ophthalmology, indications for high-dose corticotherapy are various. This paper reports the case of a Caledonian man who presented with intestinal strongyloidiasis, discovered 25 years after he had left the endemic area. A checkup before corticotherapy for traumatic retina edema provided the diagnosis of the infection. The authors emphasize the importance of searching for Strongyloidiasis stercoralis larva before initiating corticotherapy, as it is the main treatment responsible for parasitic dissemination. The most severe form of strongyloidiasis, the disseminated form, has a

Pulmonary actinomycosis: a case undergoing resection through video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).

Actinomycosis is an uncommon disease, which is usually manifested as cervicofacial infection and related to poor oral hygiene or compromised immune function. Pulmonary actinomycosis is rare, but its diagnosis is changing due to its variable presentation and the similarity in appearance to other intrapulmonary diseases. Here we report an 80-year-old man with a solitary pulmonary nodule over the left upper lobe. Pulmonary neoplasm was highly suspected in this patient and thus resection of the mass was undertaken through video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). Histopathological examination demons

Discoid lupus erythematosus of the eyelids associated with staphylococcal blepharitis and Meibomian gland dysfunction.

Lower eyelid involvement occurs in 6% of patients with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). Eyelid lesions are rarely the initial manifestation of DLE. We describe a 25-year-old woman presenting with discoid lesions of the lower eyelids, staphylococcal blepharitis and Meibomian gland dysfunction, who later developed a discoid lesion on the chin. Histopathological and immunofluorescence studies of a biopsy specimen from this lesion established the diagnosis of DLE. We are unaware of any previously reported cases of DLE presenting with discoid eyelid lesions associated with staphylococcal blephari

[Bacterial meningitis following spinal anaesthesia].

A 37-year-old man in a status epilepticus due to meningitis was admitted to Intensive Care because of respiratory insufficiency. Spinal fluid culture yielded Streptococcus salivarius. Despite extensive diagnostics, the source of this bacterium could not be found. However, the patient had recently undergone spinal anaesthesia for surgery on a toe ulcer, from which other bacteria were cultured. The patient died 2 weeks after admission with a picture of multiple organ failure. Bacterial meningitis following spinal anaesthesia may be the result of impairment of the blood-brain barrier due to a sud

Prevalence of pediculosis and scabies in preschool nursery children of Afyon, Turkey.

Scabies and pediculosis are ubiquitous, contagious, and debilitating parasitic dermatoses. The tendency of high prevalence of pediculosis and scabies among school and preschool age children has prompted us to conduct a head louse and scabies prevalence survey among preschool nursery children in our district. A school-based, crosssectional study was performed, with 1,134 children chosen for evaluation. All cases were evaluated by physical examination and a detailed, structured questionnaire. The infestation was found in 14 (1.2%) of 1,134 children; 9 (0.8%) with pediculosis capitis and 5 (0.4%)

Multidisciplinary treatment of agenesis in the anterior and posterior areas: a long term retrospective analysis.

Twenty-two implants inserted in the anterior area in 15 patients, and 24 implants inserted in the posterior area in 9 patients, for a total of 46 implants in orthodontic patients suffering from single or multiple agenesis, were analyzed retrospectively. The average time of follow-up, subsequent to the prosthetic insertion was 60.3 months. The average time from actual diagnosis of agenesis to the completion of therapy was 76.2 months. There were no implant failures, although 17.4% experienced prosthetic complications. Analysis of the sample identified 5 critical issues that are frequently under

Extra help required by litigants after simple fractures--a questionnaire based study.

A questionnaire based interview of 100 patients under fracture clinic review was undertaken to assess the help required with the activities of daily living (ADL) in the first 2 weeks following fractures of the hand, wrist, neck of humerus, foot or ankle. The amount of help patients required was correlated with whether or not the patients were claiming compensation for their injuries. Twenty-five percent were litigating and this was shown to influence the amount of help a patient reported having received with dressing, shopping, cooking, housework, personal hygiene and travelling (p<0.0001) and

[Trachoma control in Lódź at the time of the II Republic of Poland].

In Lódź at the time of the II Republic of Poland trachoma was one of the infectious diseases of high social and health repercussions. This disease developed predominantly in the working class districts neglected as regards sanitary and hygienic conditions. Trachoma was spread due to lack of waterworks and sewage systems, very poor housing conditions and low level of health culture. Trachoma control was undertaken in Lódź in the years 1922-1923, when the municipal authorities set up the Section for Trachoma Control, the specialist outpatients' department and schools in which trachoma children w

[State of ophthalmology in ancient Rome].

The article presents the state of medical knowledge of the peoples forming Etruscan and Roman civilization circa 600 years B. C. Medical practices of these peoples are discussed. It is underlined that some Etruscan views were adopted by the Romans who cared much about hygiene. However, the development of Roman medicine was strictly related to the Greek And Egyptian physicians to this country. Various conditions of ophthalmic inflammation and many ocular diseases like pterygium, entropionand tumor of the lids were known in the Roman society. We owe to Celsus the description of the couching of t

["Diary of health of every estate" and children's issues].

L. Lafontaine's "Diary of Health for Every Estate" including children's issues was being published from 1801 to 1802. It was the first Polish magazine addressed to the whole society. In its author's opinion this magazine was to propagate rules of hygiene, sanitary education and inform about methods of proceeding in different cases. Lafontaine devoted a lot of attention to sickness affecting mostly the poor and uneducated. He was the first to mention the problem of sick children. In articles, he refer to naturalism and Locke's and Rousseau's ideas. He mentioned and described defects, symptoms a

Phantom breast pain as a source of functional loss.

Although physicians are aware of phantom limb pain, which can occur in up to 85% of patients who undergo amputation, and its potential effect on functional status, the presence of phantom pain after amputation of other body parts such as the breast and its effect on function may be less appreciated. We report the case of a 63-yr-old woman with multiple sclerosis who underwent a modified radical mastectomy for left intraductal breast carcinoma. After her mastectomy, she required a brief course of inpatient rehabilitation and was discharged from rehabilitation independent, with feeding, dressing

Endocarditis due to Staphylococcus aureus after minor dog bite.

Living in a society of animal lovers, the dangers are often not always apparent. Injury from bites and scratches is an occupational hazard for those people who work with animals. Despite the high risk of secondary wound infection as a result of an animal bite, many patients do not receive treatment with an antimicrobial medication. This report describes a case of a previously fit and well 66-year-old female dog handler who, after an apparently minor dog bite to the hand, developed fulminant acute Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis and life-threatening aortic regurgitation.
