Advances in pharmacogenomics have improved understanding of allopurinol hypersensitivity syndrome (AHS), and new research suggests HLA-B*5801 is a strong risk factor for this condition; in some populations, almost all patients who develop AHS carry this allele. This discovery could influence the treatment of gout, in particular, how allopurinol is used.

We report a case of postherpetic granulomatous folliculitis in a 52-year-old female. The several cutaneous granulomatous eruptions following herpes zoster reported in the literature include annular, sarcoid and tuberculoid granuloma, granulomatous vasculitis and granulomatous folliculitis. The mechanism of granuloma formation is probably triggered by a delayed hypersensitivity response to the virus.

Forty four patients with virus conjunctivitis, keratitis, uveitis and retinitis were treated by acyclovir in tablets--5 times a day 400 mg.; the results were satisfactory. The drug was well tolerated and it could be used also in patients who showed hypersensitivity for acyclovir after ++intra-conjunctival application in the form of ointment.

Sodium cromoglycate was applied to the forearm of 9 subjects with known delayed hypersensitivity, and to the back of 14 dinitrochlorobenzene-sensitized guinea pigs before challenge with the allergen and sodium lauryl sulphate. Very few reports of brucellosis with overt renal failure exist in the literature. The authors report interstitial nephritis and distal sensory-motor polyneuropathy as the presenting features of brucellosis. It is postulated that immunologic hypersensitivity reactions may play a role in the pathogenesis of brucellosis. A brief review on this topic is presented.
