Inferior ST-Segment Elevation Pattern as a Result of a Small Bowel Obstruction: A Case Report.

ST segment elevation patterns on Electrocardiogram (ECG) are a crucial finding in the diagnosis and treatment of acute coronary syndrome. An ST segment elevation pattern can be a sign of acute myocardial ischemia requiring immediate intervention. However, ST elevation patterns have been reported to occur due to obstructive intraabdominal pathology, a diagnosis often confirmed by cardiac catheterization. Here we report a 75-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with worsening chest and epigastric abdominal pain. ECG demonstrated ST-segment elevations in inferior leads (II, I

[Surgical treatment of the medial epicondyle fracture of the humerus using the ''Inside-out'' technique. Description of the technique and results].

INTRODUCTION: the "Inside-out" technique is one of the options for medial epicondyle fracture fixation of the humerus. It involves preparing the fixation from the internal portion of the fracture to the external portion. Then, the fracture is fixed with a cannulated screw from the external to the internal portion. This study aims to describe our experience with this technique, its outcomes, and its complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS: this is a retrospective observational study describing a series of cases treated with the "Inside-out" technique for medial epicondyle fracture fixation from 20

The utility of a CT grading scale in deciding on surgical intervention for patients with suspected small bowel obstruction.

BACKGROUND: A grading system was developed for computerized tomography (CT) scans evaluating patients with suspected small bowel obstruction (SBO). We hypothesized that patients with a higher grade of suspected SBO on CT scan would be more likely to require surgical intervention. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients who presented to the Emergency Room (ER) who had a CT of the abdomen and pelvis for suspected SBO. Patients were divided into 5 groups: Grade 1 (SBO unlikely), Grade 2 (probable partial or early SBO), Grade 3 (probable high grade SBO), Grade 4 (SBO with changes concerni

Feasibility and effectiveness of extended-release buprenorphine (XR-BUP) among correctional populations: a systematic review.

Background: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) reduce risks for overdose among correctional populations. Among other barriers, daily dosing requirements hinder treatment continuity post-release. Extended-release buprenorphine (XR-BUP) may therefore be beneficial. However, limited evidence exists. Objectives: To conduct a systematic review examining the feasibility and effectiveness of XR-BUP among correctional populations. Methods: Searches were carried out in Pubmed, Embase, and PsychINFO in October 2023. Ten studies reporting on feasibility or effectiveness of XR-BUP were included, rep

Prospectively predicting violent and aggressive incidents in prison practice with the Risk Screener Violence (RS-V): Results from a multisite prison study.

Preventing in-prison violence and maintaining a safe environment is an important goal within prison settings. Screening for violence risk may provide a valuable addition to reach this goal. Within the Dutch prison system, the Risk Screener Violence (RS-V) has become an important new element in overall risk management. Prior research shows that RS-V scores are a sound predictor of institutional violence and aggression of incarcerated persons. Whereas previous studies predominantly analyzed retrospective file-based data, the present study includes RS-Vs rated by prison employees in real-life pri

The moderation effect of mental health services use on the relationship between exposures to adverse childhood experiences and mental health outcomes among US adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The prevailing exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) among youth is associated with adolescents' mental health. However, few studies have examined whether receiving help from mental health services affects mental health outcomes among adolescents with ACEs. Therefore, this study examines the moderated effects of mental health services use on the relationship between exposures to ACEs and mental health outcomes among US adolescents. METHODS: The sample was restricted to adolescents aged 11-17 using data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2019, 2021, an

The impact of adverse childhood experiences on mental health, sexual risk behaviors, and alcohol consumption in adulthood.

The purpose of the study was to determine how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) relate to adulthood flourishing, symptoms of depression, anxiety, somatization, self-reported health, sexual risk behaviors, and alcohol consumption. A quantitative cross-sectional methodology was used. A total of 452 adults completed the survey. The most prevalent ACE include physical abuse (44.69%), separation/divorce of parents (41.81%), living with someone with alcohol problems (39.38%), and being sworn, insulted, or humiliated by adults at home (35.62%). Almost one out of every four respondents (24.34%) repo

What You Should Know About Vasitis: A Case Report.

Even though infected vasitis is rarely reported in the literature, there are other diagnoses that share the same clinical signs, including testicular torsion, epididymo-orchitis, epididymitis, trauma, and incarcerated hernia. A 27-year-old man was brought to the emergency department by his brother with right inguinal and testicular pain for one day. The history was not significant with fever, lower urinary tract symptoms, urethral discharge, change in bowel habits, previous history of inguinal swelling, or surgical intervention. On presentation, the patient was vitally stable, and right infra-

Psychiatric morbidity among women in Norwegian prisons, 2010-2019: a register-based study.

PURPOSE: Research suggests that women in prison have more mental health problems than men and are prone to suffer from more severe psychiatric disorders. This study utilizes national registry data to describe demographic and psychiatric gender differences in Norwegian prisons, and to investigate comorbid psychiatric disorders and time trends in psychiatric morbidity among women. METHODS: Longitudinal data from the Norwegian Prison Release Study linked with the Norwegian Patient Registry and data from Statistics Norway provided information on health care utilization, socioeconomic status, and

The association between attitudes and the provision of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in United States jails.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder is prevalent among individuals who are incarcerated, yet medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are not widely available in United States jails and prisons. Negative staff attitudes across the criminal legal system may prevent MOUD from being provided. We sought to determine if staff attitudes are associated with the provision of MOUD in prisons or jails. METHODS: 227 staff members of 43 jails and partnering community-based treatment providers answered questions on the effectiveness and acceptability of methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone. Response pat

Cluster analysis to identify patient profiles and substance use patterns among pregnant persons with opioid use disorder.

The study objective was to identify distinct profiles of pregnant persons with opioid use disorder (PP-OUD) using cluster analysis and examine difference in substance use patterns between profiles. We examined data from 104 PP-OUD ≤ 32 weeks of gestation who were recruited into a behavioral health clinical trial at two academic medical centers. We used Partitioning Around Medoids analysis to identify clusters and explored patterns of substance use and substance use treatment between clusters using bivariate statistical tests and regression methods. We identified two distinct clusters of partic

Antibiotic Practice in Patients With Acute Abdomen Admitted to a Danish Regional Hospital: A Clinical Qualitative Assurance Study.

Background Acute abdomen is often complicated by intra-abdominal infection requiring antibiotic therapy. Danish regional antibiotic guidelines emphasize the restricted use of broad-spectrum antibiotics such as cephalosporins. In this study, we aimed to evaluate antibiotic practices in relation to hospitalized patients with acute abdomen. Methodology This retrospective quality assurance study was conducted among patients admitted to the surgical emergency department at the North Denmark Regional Hospital during a four-month observation period. Data were extracted from electronic patient journal

Type of Victimization Exposure, Perpetrator Type, and Timing of Victimization: The Impact on Behavioral Health Outcomes.

The effect of abuse victimization in correctional samples has been researched previously, particularly with an eye toward these experiences on justice-involved youth and prison samples' offending and recidivism behavior. The role of this type of victimization, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, and polyvictimization, is less studied in jail populations. The effect of abuse victimization is also less researched among other outcomes, including behavioral health disorders (BHDs) and substance use disorder (SUD). While the effect of abuse, generally, has been examined, less is known about how

An examination of autonomic and facial responses to prototypical facial emotion expressions in psychopathy.

Meta-analyses have found that people high in psychopathy categorize (or "recognize") others' prototypical facial emotion expressions with reduced accuracy. However, these have been contested with remaining questions regarding the strength, specificity, and mechanisms of this ability in psychopathy. In addition, few studies have tested holistically whether psychopathy is related to reduced facial mimicry or autonomic arousal in response to others' dynamic facial expressions. Therefore, the current study presented 6 s videos of a target person making prototypical emotion expressions (anger, fear

Robotic operations in urgent general surgery: a systematic review.

Robotically assisted operations are the state of the art in laparoscopic general surgery. They are established predominantly for elective operations. Since laparoscopy is widely used in urgent general surgery, the significance of robotic assistance in urgent operations is of interest. Currently, there are few data on robotic-assisted operations in urgent surgery. The aim of this study was to collect and classify the existing studies. A two-stage, PRISMA-compliant literature search of PubMed and the Cochrane Library was conducted. We analyzed all articles on robotic surgery associated with urge

Addressing sexual and reproductive health and rights with men in prisons: co-production and feasibility testing of a relationship, sexuality and future fatherhood education programme.

PURPOSE: Young incarcerated male offenders are at risk of poorer sexual health, adolescent parenthood and lack opportunities for formative relationship and sexuality education (RSE) as well as positive male role models. The purpose of this paper is to report the process of co-production and feasibility testing of a novel, gender-transformative RSE programme with young male offenders to encourage positive healthy relationships, gender equality, and future positive fatherhood. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Using a rights-based participatory approach, the authors co-produced an RSE programme with

Feasibility of recruiting in prisons during a randomized controlled trial with people with serious mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Successful participant recruitment is vital to the feasibly of intervention research. In the behavioral and social sciences, intervention researchers face a myriad of recruitment barriers, many of which stem from working in real-world settings and among hard-to-access populations. Optimizing recruitment efforts requires being intentional about study planning and resource allocation, carefully documenting the outcomes of recruitment efforts, and developing and implementing procedures and strategies to overcome anticipated recruitment barriers. METHODS: The current article presents

Psilocybin use is associated with lowered odds of crime arrests in US adults: A replication and extension.

BACKGROUND: The United States boasts the largest prison population in the world, conferring significant direct and indirect costs (e.g. lost wages for the incarcerated, increased morbidity/mortality, etc.) to society. Recidivism rates are high for the imprisoned and most interventions to reduce criminality are minimally effective. Thus, in addition to the need for criminal justice reform, there is a need to better understand factors linked to lowered criminal behavior. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between the use of classic psychedelic substances (psilocybin, LSD
