The mistreatment of women during maternity care and its association with the maternal continuum of care in health facilities.

BACKGROUND: Mistreatment of childbearing women continues despite global attention to respectful care. In Ethiopia, although there have been reports of mistreatment of women during maternity care, the influence of this mistreatment on the continuum of maternity care remains unclear. In this paper, we report the prevalence of mistreatment of women from various dimensions, factors related to mistreatment and also its association to the continuum of maternity care in health facilities. METHODS: We conducted an institution-based cross-sectional survey among women who gave birth within three months

"COVID knocked me straight into the dirt": perspectives from people experiencing homelessness on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness are uniquely susceptible and disproportionately affected by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding context-specific challenges, responses, and perspectives of people experiencing homelessness is essential to improving pandemic response and mitigating the long-term consequences of the pandemic on this vulnerable population. METHODS: As part of an ongoing community-based participatory research study in partnership with a homeless service organization in Indiana, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a total of 34 individuals exp

Resilience is inversely associated with self-harm behaviors among Chinese adolescents with childhood maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Abundant studies have identified the association between childhood maltreatment and self-harm (SH), but little has been discussed with regard to the role of resilience in SH behaviors of adolescents who had experienced childhood maltreatment. In this study, we investigated if resilience, as well as its five dimensions, could present negative associations with presence, repetition, and severity of SH among maltreated and neglected adolescents in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey including 2,084 maltreated teenagers aged from 10 to 17 years was conducted in southwest China Yu

Cross-sectional and longitudinal risk of physical impairment in a cohort of postmenopausal women who experience physical and verbal abuse.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to interpersonal violence, namely verbal and physical abuse, is a highly prevalent threat to women's health and well-being. Among older, post-menopausal women, several researchers have characterized a possible bi-directional relationship of abuse exposure and diminished physical functioning. However, studies that prospectively examine the relationship between interpersonal abuse exposure and physical functioning across multiple years of observation are lacking. To address this literature gap, we prospectively evaluate the association between abuse exposure and physical fun

Depression, women, and the workplace.

Depression is a highly prevalent disorder that causes much personal distress and difficulties in functioning at home and in the workplace. In the workplace, as elsewhere, depression can manifest as a variation in normal mood, as a symptom, as a disorder, or as a disease. Occupational health professionals are more concerned with clinical depression, a term used to signify any type of depression that causes significant personal distress and/or problems in functioning. Clinical depression is manifest in the workplace and adversely affects the employee's work satisfaction and performance. For most

From rugby to basketball: a comparative analysis on the implementation of mixed ability.

INTRODUCTION: People with disabilities continued to face numerous barriers to participation in mainstream sports clubs. In this regard, the Mixed Ability (MA) model emerged as a response to the limited availability of inclusive opportunities that enabled involvement in these contexts and, consequently, the exercise of individual rights. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the application of the MA model in basketball and to compare it with rugby, a discipline with a more consolidated trajectory in this field. Furthermore, it sought to assess how participation influenced the percept

Competencies required when police patrol officers encounter people in suicidal crisis: a Delphi study.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is a leading cause of death globally and represents a common, resource-intensive duty for police patrol officers (PPOs). Responding to suicidal crises is often traumatic, and PPOs rarely receive comprehensive training, leaving them inadequately prepared. Police authorities frequently assume operational responsibility in such situations, encompassing emotional, legal, tactical and safety considerations. AIM: This study aimed to explore and describe the competencies required of PPOs when encountering individuals in suicidal crisis. METHOD: An exploratory, descriptive desi

Seven Symptoms Over Nearly 4,000 Days: Item-Level Variability in the Psychometric Properties of Daily Alcohol Use Disorder Symptoms in Young Adult Drinkers.

People experience symptoms of alcohol use disorders (AUD) in their daily lives, including more impairment-based symptoms (e.g., hazardous use, interpersonal problems) and symptoms based on the intensity or frequency of consumption (e.g., cravings or limit violations). We estimated the psychometric properties of seven manifestations of daily AUD symptoms in a high-risk sample of regularly drinking young adults and identified the optimal operationalization and thresholds for those symptoms. We estimated item response theory (IRT) models in ecological momentary assessment data (n = 527, age 18-22

The Interpersonal Context of Emotion Dysregulation and Risk Perception in Women With Histories of Sexual Trauma.

Sexual victimization and assault are significant public health problems. Survivors of sexual assault have significantly increased risk for psychological health problems, physical health problems, interpersonal difficulties, and other negative outcomes. One such outcome is impaired risk perception, which is associated with increased risk for future sexual assaults. Recently, the role of emotion dysregulation as related to traumatic events, traumatic stress and their consequences has been identified as an important psychological process that may mediate survivor outcomes. The present study rando

Exploring Prejudice Toward Tinder: Two Experiments on the Social Perception of Dating App Users and Online-Formed Couples.

While dating apps such as Tinder are now widespread, social stigma toward their users remains a significant yet underexplored issue. Two experiments examined how prejudice toward Tinder shapes social perception and interpersonal attraction. Study 1 (N = 206) investigated impressions toward a potential partner whose profile was described as originating from Tinder versus Facebook. Higher prejudice predicted reduced attention to the target's images when the profile was presented as coming from Tinder and was associated with slightly more negative trait attributions. Curiously, participants with

Neurodiversity as an epistemic stress test for psychotherapy and health care: a neuroaffirmative conceptual analysis of relational-proximity priors in clinical, institutional, and AI-supported models.

Neurodiversity-affirming mental health care requires not only adapting support to neurodivergent people but also examining the relational assumptions through which alliance, empathy, cooperation, progress, and risk are interpreted. This Conceptual Analysis develops the heuristic concept of relational-proximity priors: implicit assumptions that emotional closeness, rapid reciprocity, eye contact, visible warmth, and ready acceptance of help are generally reliable indicators of therapeutic fit or improvement. Drawing primarily on autism research and, more cautiously, on broader neurodivergence-i

Identifying the Factors Associated with Sexual Dissatisfaction in Spouse Caregivers of Persons with Dementia: The Importance of Conjugal Satisfaction.

Sexuality plays an important role for couples confronted with dementia and may support them to cope with the disease, to sustain the couple relationship and sustain a better experience of the caregiving situation. Nevertheless, the majority of spouse caregivers report a decline in their sexual satisfaction. The objective of this study was to investigate the personal, interpersonal, social, and cultural factors related to sexual dissatisfaction (SD) in spouse caregivers of persons with dementia, as well as the relationships between these factors. This online study included 64 participants who c

Significance of perinatal trauma screening and care coordination to improve infant health outcomes.

This commentary addresses the need for trauma-informed screening and coordinated mental health care across obstetric (OB) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) settings. Perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related mental health conditions are common yet under-recognized, particularly among individuals exposed to medical trauma, prior adversity, or interpersonal violence. Perinatal PTSD prevalence estimates range from 3-6 % in community samples and 15-25 % in high-risk populations, including NICU parents, individuals with obstetric complications, and those with prior trauma hi

Rodent models of aggression: from mechanisms to clinical translation.

Aggression is an evolutionarily conserved social behavior that becomes clinically relevant when it loses contextual and inhibitory regulation. Rodent models do not serve to reproduce the full complexity of human violence, with its legal, moral, cultural, and interpersonal dimensions. Their translational value lies instead in making core mechanisms of aggression regulation experimentally accessible. This article discusses how rodent models help to distinguish adaptive from dysregulated aggression; to select clinically informative paradigms; and to identify causal pathways that shape attack thre

Crisis responders' perspectives on animal-assisted crisis response in acute trauma settings: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: Animal-Assisted Crisis Response (AACR) is used to provide immediate psychosocial support following traumatic events, yet limited qualitative research has examined how crisis responders understand its role in acute trauma settings. This study explored responders' perspectives on the relational, emotional, and operational dimensions of AACR. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews and demographic questionnaires were completed with 21 crisis responders involved in acute trauma response. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis supported by ATLAS.ti. RESULTS: Four themes were i

Exploring difference in recognition and confusion of facial expressions between high and low problematic internet use individuals: Evidence from behavior and ERPs.

Accurate recognition of facial expressions is crucial for effective interpersonal socialization, but individuals with problematic internet use (PIU) may face challenges. This study compared facial expression recognition between high PIU (HPIU) and low PIU (LPIU) individuals across three experiments. Experiment 1, using six-alternative forced choice task, found that HPIU individuals recognized six basic emotions significantly less accurately than LPIU individuals and showed greater confusion, particularly for negative expressions. Experiment 2 focused on anger and disgust expressions using the

Effects of an app-assisted self-management intervention for urinary incontinence on self-efficacy and related outcomes in men with prostate cancer: A randomized controlled feasibility trial.

PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of an app-assisted self-management intervention for urinary incontinence (App-SMI-UI) in men with prostate cancer. METHODS: We recruited men (n = 85) who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and experienced urinary incontinence following radical prostatectomy. Participants were randomly assigned to the self-management group (n = 43) or the attrition control group (n = 42). The self-management group underwent a 12-week App-SMI-UI while the control group received a single session of multimedia dietary information. Data was

Development of the Affiliate Stigma Scale for parents of children with genetic conditions.

Affiliate stigma is an internalized form of courtesy stigma that arises from close connections with individuals who have stigmatized traits. Assessing affiliate stigma in clinical settings is crucial, as it affects the psychological well-being of those affected. However, no measurement scale is currently available to assess affiliate stigma related to genetic conditions. This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the Affiliate Stigma Scale utilizing data obtained from parents of children with genetic conditions. We adapted the English version of the Affiliate Stigma Scale originally dev

Behavioral and neural responses to social exclusion in women: the role of facial attractiveness and friendliness.

The behavioral and neural responses to social exclusion were examined in women randomized to four conditions, varying in levels of attractiveness and friendliness. Informed by evolutionary theory, we predicted that being socially excluded by attractive unfriendly women would be more distressing than being excluded by unattractive women, irrespective of their friendliness level. Our results contradicted most of our predictions but provide important insights into women's responses to interpersonal conflict. Accounting for rejection sensitivity, P300 event-related potential amplitudes were larges

Association between traumatic events with suicidality among adolescents: A large-scale cross-sectional study of 260,423 participants.

Traumatic events have significant negative impacts throughout one's life. We aimed to comprehensively examine the early associations between traumatic events and suicidality among adolescents. In a cross-sectional sample of 260,423 adolescents in Deyang, China in September 2021, we assessed individual traumatic events, cumulative types, and patterns, alongside suicide risk scores and ideation, attempts, or plans. Linear and Poisson regression models adjusted for demographic confounders evaluated the association. Robust associations existed between interpersonal violence-related traumatic event
