Summary of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Male Infertility by the Japanese Urological Association With the Support of the Japan Society for Reproductive Medicine.

These 2024 guidelines address male infertility amid Japan's declining birth rate, following the recent provision of national health insurance coverage for infertility treatments. Male factors contribute to approximately 50% of infertility cases, with spermatogenic dysfunction being the most common cause (82.4%). The guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for diagnosing and treating male infertility. Diagnostic approaches include comprehensive medical history, physical examination, semen analysis, hormone testing, genetic testing for severe cases, and appropriate imaging studies. Tre

The first outbreak of equine coronavirus infection in 13 years among draft horses at Obihiro Racecourse in Japan in 2025.

Equine coronavirus (ECoV) causes fever, anorexia and sometimes enteric signs (e.g. diarrhea) in adult horses. Three ECoV outbreaks among draft horses at the same Japanese racecourse have been reported previously, in 2004, 2009 and 2012. We describe the epidemiological, clinical and genetic features of the fourth ECoV outbreak at the same racecourse in 2025. In January 2025, a sudden increase in the number of draft horses showing various combinations of fever, anorexia and enteric signs was observed at Obihiro Racecourse, in Hokkaido, Japan. Of about 800 horses, 176 showed clinical signs. Speci

Despite guideline recommendations against the long-term use of central antitussives, actual clinical practice remains unclear. We aimed to investigate prescription patterns of central antitussives in patients with cough using Japanese claims data. In this retrospective cohort study, we evaluated patients aged ≥ 20 years with subacute and chronic cough from IQVIA Claims database. The primary outcome was the number of days central antitussives were prescribed. Additionally, we examined co-occurrence patterns of comorbidities and adverse events, specifically nausea and constipation, in relation t

The first case of Al-Raqad syndrome in Japan is associated with a homozygous DCPS exonic variant resulting in aberrant splicing.

BACKGROUND: Cases of unexplained neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) are often accompanied by multiple congenital anomalies. With recent advances in genetic analysis technology, whole-exome sequencing (WES) has become a powerful diagnostic tool for unexplained NDD patients, but variants of unknown significance are sometimes detected in them. METHODS: WES identified a variant in a 2-year-old boy with NDD associated with multiple congenital anomalies who had no abnormal findings in G-banding and array comparative genomic hybridization (array CGH). mRNA analysis was performed on the variant using

Reconsidering the Widespread Use of Active Vitamin D Analogues for Osteoporosis in Japan: A Call for Evidence-Based Prescription Practices.

In Japan, active vitamin D has been widely prescribed for osteoporosis due to its regulatory approval, in contrast to international practice where it is not considered standard therapy. However, growing evidence indicates that these agents offer limited efficacy in fracture prevention and may pose significant risks. Mechanistically, active vitamin D increases both serum calcium and phosphate, which, in the absence of bone-forming signals such as growth, fracture healing, or high mechanical loading, may promote ectopic calcification rather than bone strengthening. Osteoporosis, particularly in

Determination of whole genome sequence of human cytomegalovirus circulating in Japan and discovery of geographic genome structure in UL148 gene.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a member of the Herpesviridae family, is prevalent worldwide. HCMV is generally asymptomatic but causes severe disease in immunocompromised patients or infants who are congenitally infected. Recent advances in sequencing technology have led to the rapid expansion of the HCMV genetic database, providing a comprehensive resource for studying viral genetics. Although genetic investigations have been vigorously performed in European countries, information on the whole-genome sequence of HCMV in the East Asian region remains limited. In this study, we determined whole-
