Automated extraction of information of lung cancer staging from unstructured reports of PET-CT interpretation: natural language processing with deep-learning.

BACKGROUND: Extracting metastatic information from previous radiologic-text reports is important, however, laborious annotations have limited the usability of these texts. We developed a deep-learning model for extracting primary lung cancer sites and metastatic lymph nodes and distant metastasis information from PET-CT reports for determining lung cancer stages. METHODS: PET-CT reports, fully written in English, were acquired from two cohorts of patients with lung cancer who were diagnosed at a tertiary hospital between January 2004 and March 2020. One cohort of 20,466 PET-CT reports was use

What do speech-language pathologists do to support families' active involvement in early intervention? Exploring moment-to-moment interactions in sessions.

PURPOSE: There is growing emphasis on the importance of involving families in all aspects of the early speech-language pathology intervention process, however, both speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and families have reported that this can be challenging. To better understand how SLPs work together with families in intervention, this study aimed to (a) explore what SLPs do to support families to be actively involved in intervention, both inside and outside sessions, and (b) explore the perspectives of families regarding how SLPs supported their active involvement. METHOD: Video-reflexive et

Hearing, Speech, Language, and Communicative Participation in Patients With Apert Syndrome: Analysis of Correlation With Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 2 Mutation.

UNLABELLED: Apert syndrome (AS) is caused by the heterozygous presence of 1 of 2 specific missense mutations of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene. The 2 adjacent substitutions, designated p.Ser252Trp (S252W) and p.Pro253Arg (P253R), account for more than 98% of cases. Previous research has identified elevated hearing difficulties and incidence of cleft palate in this population. However, the influence of FGFR2 genotype on the speech, language, and communicative participation of children with AS has yet to be examined. METHODS: A retrospective case note analysis was complete

Highly accurate classification of chest radiographic reports using a deep learning natural language model pre-trained on 3.8 million text reports.

MOTIVATION: The development of deep, bidirectional transformers such as Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) led to an outperformance of several Natural Language Processing (NLP) benchmarks. Especially in radiology, large amounts of free-text data are generated in daily clinical workflow. These report texts could be of particular use for the generation of labels in machine learning, especially for image classification. However, as report texts are mostly unstructured, advanced NLP methods are needed to enable accurate text classification. While neural networks can be

Information and Communication Technology in Schools: Its Contribution to Equitable Speech-Language Therapy Services in an Underserved Small Island Developing State.

Purpose Access to speech-language therapy services for children with communication difficulties is limited in vulnerable countries within the Majority world, such as Small Island Developing States. The use of information and communication technology (ICT) has been identified as a possible solution to provide equitable access to services in Minority world countries. This study explored ICT-related conditions in remote schools of the Maldives, a Small Island Developing State, in order to identify potential service delivery approaches. Method A mixed methods approach was used, involving (a) an on

Analysis of Drug-Drug Interaction Labeling Language and Clinical Recommendations for Newly Approved Drugs Evaluated With Digoxin, Midazolam, and S-Warfarin.

PURPOSE: To best promote drug tolerability and efficacy in the clinic, data from drug-drug interaction (DDI) evaluations and subsequent translation of the results to DDI prevention and/or management strategies must be incorporated into the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) product labeling in a consistent manner because differences in language might result in varied interpretations. This analysis aimed to assess the consistency in DDI labeling language in New Drug Applications (NDAs). METHODS: NDAs of recently approved drugs (2012-2020) that increase the exposure of digoxin, midazolam, an

Best ear hearing level, time factors and language outcome in Swedish children with mild and moderate hearing loss with hearing aids.

AIM: The risk for language disorder is high in children with all levels of hearing loss (HL). Early identification and intervention should be as important for children with mild HL as for those with more severe HL. Despite new-born hearing screening, a recent survey of speech language therapist services in southern Sweden indicates that children with mild and moderate HL are severely neglected when it comes to language assessment and language intervention. In this study we explore associations between Best Ear Hearing Level (BEHL), time factors and language skills in Swedish children with HL w

Microstructural Measures of the Inferior Longitudinal Fasciculus Predict Later Cognitive and Language Development in Infants Born With Extremely Low Birth Weight.

OBJECTIVE: Extremely preterm children are at high risk for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Identifying predictors of discrete developmental outcomes early in life would allow for targeted neuroprotective therapies when neuroplasticity is at its peak. Our goal was to examine whether diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) metrics of the inferior longitudinal and uncinate fasciculi early in life could predict later cognitive and language outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: In this pilot study, 43 extremely low-birth-weight preterm infants were scanned using diffusion MRI at term-equivalent age. Whi

"Did I Say Cherry?" Error Patterns on a Blocked Cyclic Naming Task for Bilingual Children With and Without Developmental Language Disorder.

Purpose Using a blocked cyclic picture-naming task, we compared accuracy and error patterns across languages for Spanish-English bilingual children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD). Method Pictured stimuli were manipulated for semantic similarity across two (Same and Mixed) category contexts. Children's productions were scored off-line for accuracy, error frequency, and error type. Results Typically developing children were more accurate and produced fewer errors than their peers with DLD; however, this was moderated by task language and semantic context. Children were ge

Diagnostic Accuracy of Acoustic Voice Quality Index Version 02.03 in Discriminating across the Perceptual Degrees of Dysphonia Severity in Kannada Language.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) has been reported to be a sensitive tool for discriminating between the normal and dysphonic voices, however, there is a dearth of research focused on investigating the diagnostic accuracy of AVQI in discriminating across the perceptual categories of dysphonia severity ie, slight, moderate, and severe. Hence, the present study is a preliminary attempt to document the AVQI across the degrees of dysphonia severity and to verify whether the AVQI can discriminate across these degrees of perceptual dysphonia severity. METHOD: A total of 71 dysphonic

Retrieval-Based Word Learning in Young Typically Developing Children and Children With Development Language Disorder II: A Comparison of Retrieval Schedules.

Purpose Retrieval practice has been found to be a powerful strategy to enhance long-term retention of new information; however, the utility of retrieval practice when teaching young children new words is largely unknown, and even less is known for young children with language impairments. The current study examined the effect of 2 different retrieval schedules on word learning at both the behavioral and neural levels. Method Participants included 16 typically developing children ( M TD = 61.58 months) and 16 children with developmental language disorder ( M DLD = 59.60 months). Children partic

Spared bottom-up but impaired top-down interactive effects during naturalistic language processing in schizophrenia: evidence from the visual-world paradigm.

BACKGROUND: People with schizophrenia process language in unusual ways, but the causes of these abnormalities are unclear. In particular, it has proven difficult to empirically disentangle explanations based on impairments in the top-down processing of higher level information from those based on the bottom-up processing of lower level information. METHODS: To distinguish these accounts, we used visual-world eye tracking, a paradigm that measures spoken language processing during real-world interactions. Participants listened to and then acted out syntactically ambiguous spoken instructions (

Simultaneous natural speech and AAC interventions for children with childhood apraxia of speech: lessons from a speech-language pathologist focus group.

In childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), children exhibit varying levels of speech intelligibility depending on the nature of errors in articulation and prosody. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies are beneficial, and commonly adopted with children with CAS. This study focused on the decision-making process and strategies adopted by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) when simultaneously implementing interventions that focused on natural speech and AAC. Eight SLPs, with significant clinical experience in CAS and AAC interventions, participated in an online focus group. The

The association between dopamine receptor (DRD4) gene polymorphisms and second language learning style and behavioral variability in undergraduate students in Turkey.

The dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) encodes a receptor for dopamine, a chemical messenger used in the brain. One variant of the DRD4 gene, the 7R allele, is believed to be associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between repeat polymorphisms in dopamine DRD4 and second language learning styles such as visual (seeing), tactile (touching), auditory (hearing), kinesthetic (moving) and group/individual learning styles, as well as the relationships among DRD4 gene polymorphisms and ADHD in undergraduate students. Early gamma oscillations during rapid auditory processing in children with a language-learning impairment: changes in neural mass activity after training.

Children with language-learning impairment (LLI) have consistently shown difficulty with tasks requiring precise, rapid auditory processing. Remediation based on neural plasticity assumes that the temporal precision of neural coding can be improved by intensive training protocols. Here, we examined the extent to which early oscillatory responses in auditory cortex change after audio-visual training, using combined source modeling and time-frequency analysis of the human electroencephalogram (EEG). Twenty-one elementary school students diagnosed with LLI underwent the intervention for an averag
