Osteopontin as a potential mediator of inflammation in HIV and comorbid conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 39 million people live with HIV globally, with 1.3 million new infections annually. Despite improved treatment, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), neurological disorders, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and cancer are now the leading causes of death among people with HIV (PWH). Osteopontin (OPN) has emerged as a notable mediator in the inflammatory response to HIV and related NCDs. Our aim is to review the current understanding of OPN's role in HIV-related inflammatory pathways to highlight potential therapeutic avenues for improved

Intraocular lens models: Ecological distribution footprint and usage trends at a large ophthalmology centre.

BACKGROUND: Operating theatres significantly contribute to hospital's environmental footprint, underscoring the need to evaluate the ecological impact of transporting surgical products. Intraocular lenses (IOLs), sourced globally, vary in their environmental impact due to differences in packaging and manufacturing. Assessing the carbon footprint of IOL transport and usage can promote sustainability. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of IOL stock data at Rothschild Foundation Hospital, Paris, was conducted to evaluate all IOLs implanted in 2023. To estimate the ecological footprint of IOL tran

Anatomy of the infraorbital artery and its orbital branch.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To characterise the infraorbital artery (IOA) and its orbital branch, which are key structures encountered during inferior orbital explorations, with potential for orbital haemorrhage and vision loss if inappropriately handled. METHODS: Thirteen embalmed heads (26 orbits) were dissected. The following parameters were measured: orientation of the IOA in relation to the infraorbital nerve (ION); presence or absence of the orbital branch of the IOA; and the distance between the orbital branch of the IOA to the inferior orbital rim. RESULTS: In the pterygopalatine fossa, t

Chemical composition of invasive water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) impacts developmental stages of Bufotes sitibundus: threat of an invasive plant to the amphibian species.

Invasive species threaten biodiversity by disrupting biological interactions. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is recognized as one of the world's top 100 weed species and among the ten worst aquatic weeds. This study examines the impact of extracts from this non-native invasive plant on the survival, growth, and metamorphosis of Bufotes sitibundus larvae, a species of anuran amphibian. Due to the presence of phenolic compounds and heavy metals, invasive plants can significantly affect anuran development, yet these threats remain largely unstudied in amphibians. We observed increased mort

Involvement of esterases in increased resistance to pirimiphos-methyl and bifenthrin in Sitophilus oryzae (Linnaeus, 1763).

Sitophilus oryzae (L.) is a cosmopolitan pest of stored grains, frequently controlled using organophosphates and pyrethroids. However, the continuous use of these insecticides may lead to resistance development. Thus, this study evaluated the evolution of S. oryzae resistance after three generations (F3) of artificial selection with pirimiphos-methyl and bifenthrin, and the persistence of acquired resistance after three additional generations without exposure (F6) to insecticides. Two experiments were conducted: the Continuous Exposure Bioassay (CEB), with exposure to sublethal doses, and the

True inner self or fantasies and fabulation? Discourses on gender identity, sexuality, and LGBTQ among care workers in Swedish dementia care.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) people make up a considerable proportion of those in need of formal dementia care. Yet sexuality and gender identity have received little attention in dementia care research. Using a discursive approach, this article explores how dementia care workers discuss and reflect on dementia, gender identity, sexuality and caring for LGBTQ people with dementia. The article is based on a focus group study with dementia care workers in Sweden, primarily nurses and nurse assistants. The findings point to pervasive heteronormativity in everyday care practice;

Low-level viremia linked to virological failure but not clinical events.

INTRODUCTION: The main objective of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for people with HIV (PWH) is to maintain an undetectable viral load. This study evaluates the association between low-level viremia (LLV) (50-200 copies/ml) and virological failure, AIDS, and severe non-AIDS events, as well as the impact of sociodemographic and clinical factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from the Spanish HIV/AIDS research network (CoRIS), comprising ART-naive adults recruited from 47 centers across Spain. Eligible participants were those who achieved viral suppression (viral load <200 copies/ml)

A review of the effects of benzo(α)pyrene on amphibians.

In this overview, we address both in vitro and in vivo studies involving amphibians and the environmental contaminant benzo(α)pyrene (BαP). We indentified 66 papers published between 1939 and 2025, encompassing 23 species – 16 from the order Anura and 7 from the order Caudata, with no studies on Gymnophiona. Across these studies, regardless of taxonomic group, amphibians exhibited rapid absorption and metabolism of BαP (within 24 h), leading to the formation of secondary metabolites such as diols, which act as precursors of carcinogenic compounds capable of inducing DNA strand breaks. Followin

Targeting ligand PDL1 for cardiotoxicity assessment and cardiac protection in immune-related myocarditis.

AIMS: The role of cardiac programmed cell death ligand 1 (PDL1) in immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) - related myocarditis (irMyocarditis) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate whether ligand PDL1 could serve as an early indicator and a potential therapeutic target for irMyocarditis. METHODS: Cardiac PDL1 expression was assessed using single-nucleus RNA sequencing and multiplex immunohistochemistry in human patients and mouse models of irMyocarditis. A PDL1-targeted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) nanoprobe was developed for noninvasive imaging of irMyocarditis. Additionally, an adeno-ass

Update on Clinical Physiology and Pathomechanisms for Vestibulo-Autonomic Interplay.

The vestibulo-autonomic interaction refers to the neural interplay between the vestibular and autonomic systems. In particular, the vestibular system plays an active role in adjusting blood distribution during movement and changes in posture, thereby complementing the baroreflex. This review summarizes recent clinical evidence highlighting the interaction between the vestibular and autonomic systems, including altered vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials in patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, orthostatic hypotension, and neurodegenerative disorders. Additionally, the revi
