During 1954-1981, 527 patients with cancer of the gastric cardia underwent resection. Of these, 146 underwent type I radical operation (transthoracic resection) with eight (5.5%) operative deaths; 344 underwent type II radical operation (abdominothoracic resection) with 42(12.2%) operative deaths; and 37 with Stage IV lesions underwent extended operation or palliative operation with 4(10.8%) operative deaths. All had undergone lymphography during investigation of possible extension, 19 were treated with 200 KV up 1966, 64 with Cobalt up to 1978 and 29 with photons x of 18 MV since that date. In a systematic analysis of surgical specimens of 388 carcinomas of the thyroid 34 occult papillary tumours were revealed. In 18 of the 34 patients cervical lymph-node metastases were demonstrated, which in 16 had been the indication for operation. In 15 patients the tumour was a chance finding in a thyroid resected for other reasons. Postoperative follow-up over an average of ten years demonstrated a uniformly favourable course in all, regardless of tumour size or type, age, sex or lymph-node status. There were no local recurrences or metastases beyond those known at time of thyroidectomy.

Preoperative EUS was performed in 62 patients with oesophagogastric malignancy. The results were prospectively correlated with surgery and the histology of the resected specimens. Malignant melanoma of the anal canal in stages I, II and III, respectively, was diagnosed in a 58-year-old woman and two men, aged 69 and 73 years. A case of a 36-year-old male patient with a metastatic renal pelvic tumor is presented. Preoperative systemic chemotherapy with cis-platinum and methotrexate induced tumor regression. After radical nephroureterectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy the patient is without any evidence of disease 1 year later.

A case with an intense accumulation of 57Co-bleomycin in lymph node metastases of malignant melanoma in the mediastinum as a casual finding is reported. The patient had undergone a 57Co-bleomycin scintigraphy because of a peripheral lesion on the chest X-ray, in which a pathological diagnosis was impossible to obtain. This lesion showed no uptake of the radiopharmaceutical.

Of 750 patients with stage I, II or III Hodgkin's disease, admitted to the University and Hospital Radiotherapy Divisions, Florence, between 1960 and 1981, 28 (3.7%) had involvement of Waldeyer's ring (WR). In 25 patients there was associated involvement of upper cervical nodes. Other factors associated with WR involvement were age over 55 years, lymphocyte predominant histological sub-type, uninvolved mediastinum, and size of involved upper cervical nodes greater than that of involved lower cervical nodes. These factors help to define indications for prophylactic irradiation of WR.

The records of 160 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsillar fossa treated from 1968 through 1979 were reviewed. Forty-six patients with bronchial carcinoid tumors were operated on over a 37-year period. The results were reviewed with special reference to presenting complaint, histological diagnosis, location of the tumor, lymphatic involvement, and type of surgical resection.
