Utilization of mobile phones for accessing menstrual regulation services among low-income women in Bangladesh: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: As many as one-third of all pregnancies in Bangladesh are unplanned, with nearly one-half of these pregnancies ending in either menstrual regulation (MR) or illegal clandestine abortion. Although MR is provided free of charge, or at a nominal cost, through the public sector and various non-profits organizations, many women face barriers in accessing safe, affordable MR and post-MR care. Mobile health (mHealth) services present a promising platform for increasing access to MR among low-income women at risk for clandestine abortion. We sought to investigate the knowledge, attitudes a

Disrespect and abuse during childbirth in fourteen hospitals in nine cities of Peru.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of disrespect and abuse during childbirth and its associated factors in Peru. METHODS: In an observational cross-sectional study, women were surveyed within 48 hours of live delivery at 14 hospitals located in nine Peruvian cities between April and July 2016. The survey was based on seven categories of disrespect and abuse proposed by Bowser and Hill. To evaluate factors associated with each category, prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using adjusted Poisson models with robust variances. RESULTS: Among 1528 participa

The Cost of Nurse-Midwifery Care: Use of Interventions, Resources, and Associated Costs in the Hospital Setting.

INTRODUCTION: Obstetrical care often involves multiple expensive, and often elective, interventions that may increase costs to patients, payers, and the health care system with little effect on patient outcomes. The objectives of this study were to examine the following hospital related outcomes: 1) use of labor and birth interventions, 2) inpatient duration of stay, and 3) total direct health care costs for patients attended by a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) compared with those attended by an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN), within an environment of safe and high-quality care. Oral health skills framework for pregnant women: a professional consensus.

BACKGROUND: Oral health during the perinatal period is essential for maternal and child oral health. Pregnancy increases vulnerability to oral conditions (periodontal disease and dental caries) associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, while children's oral health is strongly influenced by parental-particularly maternal-knowledge, attitudes, practices, and oral health status. Although oral health education interventions may be offered during pregnancy follow-up, their effectiveness is difficult to evaluate, due to a lack of validated framework. This study aimed to develop a competency framew

The development of preterm infants from low socio-economic status families: The combined effects of melatonin, autonomic nervous system maturation and psychosocial factors (ProMote): A study protocol.

Preterm births constitute a major public health issue and a chronic, cross-generational condition globally. Psychological and biological factors interact in a way that women from low socio-economic status (SES) are disproportionally affected by preterm delivery and at increased risk for the development of perinatal mental health problems. Low SES constitutes one of the most evident contributors to poor neurodevelopment of preterm infants. Maternal perinatal mental health disorders have persistent effects on behavioral and physiological functioning throughout the lifespan and may even be eviden

Determinants of cesarean mode of childbirth among Rwandan women of childbearing age: Evidence from the 2019-2020 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS).

BACKGROUND: Rwanda has made progress in reducing maternal mortality, with rates decreasing by three-quarters between 1990 and 2015, in part due to increased access to cesarean delivery (CD). However, the prevalence of CD is also increasing for reasons other than clinical indications. Rwanda's 15% CD delivery rate is higher than World Health Organization guidelines, sparking debate about optimal CD use and potential negative outcomes in child and maternal health. This study aimed to identify the key clinical and nonclinical factors relating to CD in Rwanda. METHODS: A secondary data analysis o…

Investigating low birth weight and preterm birth as potential mediators in the relationship between prenatal infections and early child development: a linked administrative health data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal infections are associated with childhood developmental outcomes such as reduced cognitive abilities, emotional problems and other developmental vulnerabilities. However, there is currently a lack of research examining whether this arises due to potential intermediary variables like low birth weight or preterm birth, or due to some other mechanisms of maternal immune activation arising from prenatal infections. METHODS: Administrative data from the National Health Service health board of Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Scotland, were used, linking birth records to hospital record

Relationships Between Mental Health, Negative Feelings of COVID-19, and Parenting Among Pregnant Women in Fortaleza, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the literature highlighted an increased risk of child abuse and the use of negative parenting practices. Furthermore, pregnancy during this time may have been challenging and generated different feelings regarding the pandemic and motherhood. Many pregnant women had other young children, underscoring the need to understand this scenario better. Therefore, the present study examined the predictive effect of indicators of mental health disorders, emotional discomfort with motherhood, and negative perceptions of COVID-19 on negative parenting practices.

Fear of birth defects is a major barrier to soil-transmitted helminth treatment (STH) for pregnant women in the Philippines.

The World Health Organization recommends anthelminthic treatment for pregnant women after the first trimester in soil-transmitted helminth (STH) endemic regions to prevent adverse maternal-fetal consequences. Although studies have shown the high prevalence of infection in the Philippines, no research has evaluated deworming practices. We hypothesized that pregnant women are not receiving deworming treatment and we aimed to identify barriers to World Health Organization guideline implementation. We conducted key informant interviews with local Department of Health (DOH) administrators, focus gr

Do Canadian prenatal record forms integrate evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis of a FASD?

OBJECTIVES: Prenatal alcohol exposure is a significant public health issue with lifelong psychological, emotional and financial costs associated with caring for an affected individual. In 2005, the Public Health Agency of Canada and Health Canada's First Nations and Inuit Health Branch developed evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis of a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). We examined the extent to which prenatal records across Canadian provinces and territories currently integrate key recommendations from these guidelines. METHODS: A content analysis of prenatal record forms retrie

Fetal Origin of Abnormal Glucose Tolerance in Adult Offspring Induced by Maternal Bisphenol A Analogs Exposure.

With the widespread use of bisphenol A (BPA) analogs, their health risks have attracted attention. The effects of maternal BPA analogs exposure on glucose homeostasis in adult offspring and the underlying fetal origins require further exploration. Herein, we exposed pregnant mice to two types of BPA analogs─BPB and BPAF; we evaluated glucose homeostasis in adult offspring and maternal-fetal glucose transport by testing intraperitoneal glucose tolerance, determining glucose and glycogen contents, conducting positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT), detecting expression of pla
