Neurophysiological signatures of rumination's impact on opioid withdrawal severity.

Opioid withdrawal symptoms (OWS) represent a major clinical challenge during abstinence, imposing physiological distress and increasing psychological vulnerability to relapse. Psychological factors contributing to individual differences in OWS severity remain understood, and reliable biomarkers for OWS severity are still lacking, highlighting the need for early identification and timely intervention among high-risk heroin abstainers. Rumination is defined as uncontrollable negative thinking, potentially impairing the ability to suppress addiction-related negative thoughts. This study aims to i

Associations Between Welding-Related Metals and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Male Welders: The Mediating Role of Accelerated Biological Aging.

The impact of metals on atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk in workers occupationally exposed to welding fume remains unclear. We aimed to assess the associations between welding-related metals and 10-year ASCVD risk, and the mediating role of biological aging. Metals including chromium, manganese, nickel, lead, copper (Cu), and iron were detected and biological aging indices, including Klemera-Doubal method biological age (KDM-BA) and Phenotypic Age (PhenoAge), were calculated among 419 male welders in Wuhan, China. The participants had an average age of 42.77 years, of whom 9

Early-life pathways to inequalities in child mental health: evidence from eight birth cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic inequalities in children's emotional and behavioural problems are already present at school entry. We examined associations between early-life socioeconomic conditions and children's externalising and internalising problems and assessed whether early-life risk factors mediated these associations. METHODS: We analysed harmonised individual participant data from eight birth cohorts within the EU Child Cohort Network. Maternal educational level during pregnancy was used as an indicator of early-life socioeconomic conditions (SECs). Scores of children's externalising and

Causal effects of maternal BMI on pregnancy outcomes: a Mendelian randomisation study investigating the mediating role of blood counts.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy requires a delicate balance between the maternal immune system and inflammatory responses. Elevated maternal body mass index (BMI) significantly compromises the immune system and increases systemic inflammation. High maternal BMI is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including an increased risk of both pre-eclampsia and preterm birth, which may be mediated through immune-related blood cell changes. METHODS: This study used Mendelian randomisation (MR) to investigate the causal relationship between maternal BMI and pregnancy outcomes, including birth weight, plac

Trabecular bone score differs among prediabetes phenotypes: the potential mediating role of visceral adiposity.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Prediabetes comprises heterogeneous metabolic phenotypes that may differentially affect bone quality. While type 2 diabetes increases fracture risk despite preserved bone mineral density, phenotype-specific effects on bone quality during prediabetes remain unclear. We compared trabecular bone score (TBS) across prediabetes phenotypes and examined visceral adiposity's mediating role. METHODS: We analyzed 876 individuals with prediabetes (451 men, 425 postmenopausal women) from the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases Etiology Research Center cohort. Participants underwent ora

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease and risk of knee osteoarthritis: A prospective cohort study.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a leading cause of chronic pain and disability. Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a systemic metabolic disorder that influences extra-hepatic conditions. Although cross-sectional studies link MAFLD to KOA, prospective evidence remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between MAFLD, and KOA and assess the mediating role of inflammation. This study included 303,604 participants from the UK Biobank without baseline osteoarthritis. MAFLD was defined using the fatty liver index alongside metabolic criter

Cumulative blood pressure exposure and cognition: the potential mediating role of brain volume.

Elevated blood pressure (BP) has been linked to brain structure changes and cognitive decline. However, few studies have accounted for long-term cumulative BP exposure. We investigated the association between cumulative BP exposure, brain volume, cerebral blood flow (CBF), and cognitive decline. Furthermore, we explored whether alterations in brain volume and CBF mediated the association between cumulative BP and cognitive decline. We included 1012 adult participants from the Kailuan study. Cumulative BP exposure was calculated from 2006 to 2020. Brain MRI scans and the Montreal Cognitive Asse

Cerebellar structure is abnormal in schizophrenia and deviates from bipolar disorder.

The cerebellum has been implicated in schizophrenia-related structural and functional deficits, with posterior Crus I and II most consistently affected. Source-based morphometry (SBM) involves applying independent component analysis to gray matter volume to identify spatially distinct structural networks that covary across individuals. We applied SBM and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to cerebellar structural imaging data to identify patterns of gray matter differences across individuals with schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder with psychotic features (BDwP), and healthy controls (HC). Data we

Psychological inflexibility and resilience in anxiety: insights from machine-learning and robust mediation-based models.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological inflexibility (PI) has been associated with anxiety symptoms, while resilience serves as a protective factor; however, their roles and interrelationship remain poorly understood. We investigated the role of PI on anxiety-related symptoms while assessing the mediating role of resilience and testing the moderating effect of sex and psychiatric history. METHODS: From April to July 2021, an online protocol employing self-reported measures assessed PI (Acceptance and Action Questionnaire), resilience dimensions (Resilience Scale for Adults), and anxiety-related symptoms

Shared cognitive risk factors underlying rapid automatized naming deficits for the comorbidity of developmental dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: A computational parameter estimation via Bundesen's theory of visual attention.

Developmental dyslexia (DD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently co-occur, yet their shared cognitive mechanisms remain unclear. Rapid automatized naming (RAN) deficits, a hallmark of both disorders, provide a critical window into the overlapping cognitive underpinnings of DD and ADHD. While previous studies usually attributed RAN deficits to generalized processing speed impairments, the multi-stimulus nature of RAN tasks necessitates a refined framework. Guided by Bundesen's Theory of Visual Attention (TVA) model, the present study dissected multiple-element processi
