Intestinal microbiota in adult patients with Short Bowel Syndrome: Preliminary results from a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal bacterial flora plays a central role in human intestinal health and disease. Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS), a clinical condition deriving from extensive bowel resections, influence intestinal microbiota (IM) composition in order to reach a new metabolic balance. Little is known about IM in adult patients after wide intestinal resections. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fecal samples from 12 SBS patients and 16 controls were analyzed in their microbial profile by using both culture-dependent method and quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR). RESULTS: The two methods revealed signifi

Inhibition of Interleukin-10 Signaling Induces Microbiota-dependent Chronic Colitis in Apolipoprotein E Deficient Mice.

BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) mediates potent antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory properties in addition to its roles in regulating cholesterol transport and metabolism. However, its role in the intestine, specifically during inflammation, is largely unknown. METHODS: Mice (C57BL/6 or ApoE-deficient [ApoE-KO] mice) were administered either single or 4 injections (weekly) of anti-interleukin (IL)-10 receptor monoclonal antibody (1.0 mg/mouse; intraperitoneally) and euthanized 1 week after the last injection. 16S rRNA sequencing was performed in fecal samples to analyze the gut bacteria

Matrix metalloproteinases vary with airway microbiota composition and lung function in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

RATIONALE: Despite growing evidence for the roles of airway remodeling and bacterial infection in the progression of non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, relationships between collagen-degrading proteases and chronic airway infection are poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine which matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are elevated in bronchiectasis, whether these MMP levels vary based on patients' dominant infective microbe, and how these levels correlate with clinical measures of disease severity. METHODS: We determined concentrations of nine MMPs and four tissue i

Adult blood-feeding tsetse flies, trypanosomes, microbiota and the fluctuating environment in sub-Saharan Africa.

The tsetse fly vector transmits the protozoan Trypanosoma brucei, responsible for Human African Trypanosomiasis, one of the most neglected tropical diseases. Despite a recent decline in new cases, it is still crucial to develop alternative strategies to combat this disease. Here, we review the literature on the factors that influence trypanosome transmission from the fly vector to its vertebrate host (particularly humans). These factors include climate change effects to pathogen and vector development (in particular climate warming), as well as the distribution of host reservoirs. Finally, we

Microbiota and radiation-induced bowel toxicity: lessons from inflammatory bowel disease for the radiation oncologist.

New gastrointestinal symptoms are frequent after pelvic radiotherapy and can greatly affect the quality of life of cancer survivors. The effect of radiation on the intestinal microbiota, and the clinical implications of a modified microbial balance after radiotherapy are now beginning to emerge. In this Personal View, we show the importance of the microbiota for intestinal homoeostasis, and discuss the similarity between inflammatory bowel disease, which has been extensively researched, and radiation-induced gastrointestinal toxicity. By use of microbiota profiles for risk assessment and manip

Exploring the dynamic core microbiome of plaque microbiota during head-and-neck radiotherapy using pyrosequencing.

Radiotherapy is the primary treatment modality used for patients with head-and-neck cancers, but inevitably causes microorganism-related oral complications. This study aims to explore the dynamic core microbiome of oral microbiota in supragingival plaque during the course of head-and-neck radiotherapy. Eight subjects aged 26 to 70 were recruited. Dental plaque samples were collected (over seven sampling time points for each patient) before and during radiotherapy. The V1-V3 hypervariable regions of bacterial 16S rRNA genes were amplified, and the high-throughput pyrosequencing was performed. A

Lactobacillus vaginal microbiota of women attending a reproductive health care service in Benin city, Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether Lactobacillus species found in African women differ substantially to those of white decent, described in previous studies. The vaginal microbiota play an important role in female health, and when the naturally dominant lactobacilli are displaced resulting in bacterial vaginosis (BV), the host is more at risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. METHODS: Vaginal samples were collected from 241 healthy, premenopausal Nigerian women, which were then Gram-stained for Nugent scoring. Microbial DNA was extracted,

Impact of mixed nut consumption on faecal lipid content and gut microbiota composition in healthy adults.

Nuts are a source of dietary fibre and are considered a nutritious snack despite their high fat content. The effects of nut consumption on the microbiota and the role of nut-derived lipids in altering the large intestinal microbial community remain poorly understood. This study examined changes in faecal characteristics and microbiota composition in 15 healthy volunteers consuming unrestricted diets during a cross-over dietary intervention consisting of three weeks of daily mixed-nut consumption (30 g almonds, macadamias and pistachios) and three weeks of nut abstinence. Microscopic examinatio

Schizophrenia-associated gut microbiota are linked to reduced colonic PRODH expression and behavioral changes in mice.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder whose biological basis remains incompletely understood. Growing evidence implicates the gut-brain axis in SCZ, but the host pathways through which disease-associated microbiota may influence behavior remain unclear. Here, we examined whether the gut microbiota from patients with SCZ is associated with behavioral and metabolic alterations in male C57BL/6N mice. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from patients with SCZ was associated with impaired short-term recognition memory, reduced social novelty preference, and decreased prepuls

Exploring the role of gut microbiota in potential mechanism of ketogenic diet in alleviating Parkinson's disease symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Current clinical research suggests that the ketogenic diet (KD) intervention can alleviate Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This pilot study explored the potential link between KD-induced clinical improvements and gut microbiota alterations. METHODS: We engaged 27 PD patients in a 12-week ketogenic dietary trial (16 completed) and employed 16S rRNA sequencing to analyze gut microbiota differences compared to 27 healthy controls. RESULTS: Baseline analysis revealed distinct dysbiosis in PD patients, characterized by increased ab

Tryptophan metabolism: a potential link between the gut microbiota and pulmonary vascular remodeling in pulmonary hypertension.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) comprises a group of cardiopulmonary disorders characterized by a sustained increase in pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary vascular remodeling, with disease progression potentially leading to right heart failure and death. Current therapies can improve symptoms and hemodynamics in some patients, but effective means of reversing established structural pulmonary vascular remodeling remain lacking. Gut microbial dysbiosis, intestinal barrier injury, and altered microbial metabolism have been proposed to contribute to the development and progression of PH. Tryp

The Adult Aedes aegypti Bacterial Microbiota is Robust to Infection with the Obligate Microsporidian Parasite Edhazardia aedis.

Edhazardia aedis is an obligate intracellular microsporidian parasite of the arthropod vector Aedes aegypti, which is responsible for the spread of several vertebrate pathogens of global health importance. E. aedis can be highly virulent to A. aegypti and infection has severely detrimental effects on multiple A. aegypti life history traits, including longevity, body size, propensity to host-seek and blood-feed, and reproductive capacity. Herein, we queried the effect of E. aedis infection on the bacterial microbiota of adult female A. aegypti using high-throughput amplicon sequencing of the 16

Metagenomic analysis of rhizosphere soil microbiota in wild and cultivated Notopterygium incisum, an umbelliferae medicinal herb.

Notopterygium incisum is not only a traditional Chinese medicine but also an endemic herb. Artificial domestication and large-scale cultivation are crucial for resolving the crisis of wild resources and the supply-demand imbalance of N. incisum, yet current techniques have failed to stably provide the herb medicine in good quality. Metagenomic analyses revealed significant differences in the rhizomicrobiota between wild and cultivated N. incisum, particularly in microbial composition, gene functions, and community assembly. The rhizomicrobiota of the wild N. incisum from 3 different sites with

Gut Microbiota-Targeted Nutrition for Healthy Aging: Mechanistic Roles of Polyphenols and Dietary Fiber in Geroscience.

Age-related alterations in the gut microbiota contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation, immune dysregulation, metabolic dysfunction, frailty, sarcopenia, and cognitive decline. Dietary polyphenols and fermentable fiber modulate microbial composition and metabolism, promoting the production of bioactive metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids, secondary bile acids, indole derivatives, and urolithins, which regulate intestinal barrier integrity, immune homeostasis, mitochondrial function, and gut-organ communication. This narrative review critically synthesizes evidence from experimen

The association of psychological distress with microbiota alterations in patients suffering from quiescent inflammatory bowel disease.

The role of the gut microbiota and brain-gut axis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a group of multifactorial chronic disorders of uncertain etiology, is receiving increasing attention. However, little attention has been paid to the role of disease activity and psychological status in the composition of these patients' gut microbiota. To minimize the confounding effects of active inflammation, consecutive IBD patients characterized by symptom remission over the past year were recruited and assessed for psychological distress (HADS and PSS), quality of life (IBDQ), intestinal symptoms (GSRS-
