Genomic insights into epidemic plasmids carrying bla CTX-M and mcr-1 genes in Escherichia coli from Lebanese broiler production.

BACKGROUND: In a previous nationwide survey in the Lebanese broiler production, multidrug-resistant CTX-M-producing E. coli were found to carry the mobile colistin resistance gene mcr-1. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the mobile genetic supports responsible for the spread of these resistance genes among E. coli in healthy broilers in Lebanon. METHODS: Thirty-three bla CTX-M and mcr-1 positive E. coli of various sequence types from 17 broilers farms were subjected to conjugation assays. Long-read sequencing (Oxford Nanopore Technologies) and hybrid assembly were performed to determine complete pl

Bridging gaps in antenatal care: Implementation of the WHO ANC model using a web-based mobile application at different levels of the healthcare system.

INTRODUCTION: Antenatal care (ANC) is crucial for ensuring positive maternal and perinatal outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) has released comprehensive guidelines on ANC with the aim of providing a "positive pregnancy experience". While mobile health (mHealth) technology shows immense potential in improving healthcare services, evidence of its effectiveness remains limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop a mobile application aligned with the WHO antenatal care model and follow a group of antenatal women using that and compare it to the conventional care provided. METHODS

The NeoRoo mobile app: Initial design and prototyping of an Android-based digital health tool to support Kangaroo Mother Care in low/middle-income countries (LMICs).

Premature birth and neonatal mortality are significant global health challenges, with 15 million premature births annually and an estimated 2.5 million neonatal deaths. Approximately 90% of preterm births occur in low/middle income countries, particularly within the global regions of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Neonatal hypothermia is a common and significant cause of morbidity and mortality among premature and low birth weight infants, particularly in low/middle-income countries where rates of premature delivery are high, and access to health workers, medical commodities, and other res

Enough is enough: salvage procedures in severe periprosthetic joint infection.

BACKGROUND: In severe cases of periprosthetic joint infection involving negative host-dependent factors, individual-based decisions between a curative therapy vs. salvage procedure are necessary. We aimed to review salvage procedures in severe periprosthetic joint infection cases, where a gold standard of a curative two-stage exchange can no longer be achieved. The options of knee arthrodesis, amputation, persistent fistula (stable drainage), or a debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention procedure in late-onset cases are discussed, including lifelong antibiotic suppression alone. Risk perception of Ebola virus disease and COVID-19 among transport drivers living in Ugandan border districts.

BACKGROUND: Cross-border movements between districts bordering Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are common due to the interdependence between populations on either side, though this increases the risk of the international spread of infectious diseases. Due to the nature of their work, boda boda drivers (motorcycle taxis), taxis and truck drivers continue to cross the border during epidemics. However, perceived risk of contracting and spreading communicable diseases may be influenced by several factors such as the level of education, packaging and perception of health care mess

Subdermal Insertable Sensors for Health Monitoring: Applications, Challenges, and Emerging Technologies.

Continuous monitoring of chronic diseases with mobile health tools is rapidly advancing to improve patient care. Wearable sensors placed on or near the skin remain the dominant paradigm for collecting physiological data noninvasively during activities of daily living. However, wearable sensors have their limitations. Epidermal sensors are fundamentally limited by the information barrier that the skin presents. Furthermore, environmental factors impact the stability and longevity of wearables. An alternative technology is the expanding class of minimally invasive subdermal sensors, also called
