Testing a social ecological model for relations between political violence and child adjustment in Northern Ireland.

Relations between political violence and child adjustment are matters of international concern. Past research demonstrates the significance of community, family, and child psychological processes in child adjustment, supporting study of interrelations between multiple social ecological factors and child adjustment in contexts of political violence. Testing a social ecological model, 300 mothers and their children (M = 12.28 years, SD = 1.77) from Catholic and Protestant working class neighborhoods in Belfast, Northern Ireland, completed measures of community discord, family relations, and chil

Differential modulation of hippocampal plasticity in a non-noxious conflict model for anxiety.

Modulation of synaptic strength may underlie stress-induced changes in cognitive ability. Long-term memory formation underpinning fear and anxiety behaviors, such as those seen in post-traumatic stress and phobic disorders, is thought to be dependent on amygdalo-hippocampal interactions. In most models, however, painful stimuli are used to induced stress and anxiety. Here, the effects of a novel conflict model, developed to generate a more naturalistic model of anxiety, utilizing two non-noxious stressors (predator (cat) odor and light), on hippocampus plasticity were determined. Exposure to t

Terrorism-related perceived stress, adolescent depression, and social support from friends.

BACKGROUND: Terrorism leads to adolescent depression, but little is known about protective factors. We investigated 90 adolescents (in grades 7-9) residing in Dimona, Israel, before and after their exposure to a suicide bombing. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prospective effect of social support from friends, parents, and school personnel on the link between bombing-related perceived stress and adolescent depression. METHODS: Seven months prior to the suicide bombing, adolescents completed questionnaires as part of an ongoing investigation of youth risk/resilience under stress. The focus of the p

The paranoid optimist: an integrative evolutionary model of cognitive biases.

Human cognition is often biased, from judgments of the time of impact of approaching objects all the way through to estimations of social outcomes in the future. We propose these effects and a host of others may all be understood from an evolutionary psychological perspective. In this article, we elaborate error management theory (EMT; Haselton & Buss, 2000). EMT predicts that if judgments are made under uncertainty, and the costs of false positive and false negative errors have been asymmetric over evolutionary history, selection should have favored a bias toward making the least costly error

A randomized controlled trial of cognitive-behavior therapy for Cambodian refugees with treatment-resistant PTSD and panic attacks: a cross-over design.

We examined the therapeutic efficacy of a culturally adapted cognitive-behavior therapy for Cambodian refugees with treatment-resistant posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and comordid panic attacks. We used a cross-over design, with 20 patients in the initial treatment (IT) condition and 20 in delayed treatment (DT). Repeated measures MANOVA, Group & times; Time ANOVAs, and planned contrasts indicated significantly greater improvement in the IT condition, with large effect sizes (Cohen's d) for all outcome measures: Anxiety Sensitivity Index (d = 3.78), Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (d =

Representational models associated with fear of failure in adolescents and young adults.

As a descriptive trait, fear of failure (FF) has been associated with serious problems in achievement and health. Psychodynamic theories emphasizing interpersonal processes and early object relations are often used to explain the etiology of FF despite little comprehensive research on such theories in the FF domain. The present study employed the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior to study associations between FF and representational models of self and others among 211 high school and college-aged students and athletes. FF was strongly associated with hostile representational models of sel

Mortality in elderly men with low psychosocial coping resources using anxiolytic-hypnotic drugs.

OBJECTIVE: Insufficient coping with stress may lead to increased susceptibility for disease and death. Use of anxiolytic-hypnotic drugs has been suggested as a coping strategy, and some opinions have proposed their use as preventive medication. The aim of this study was to estimate if use of anxiolytic-hypnotic drugs counters the increased mortality observed in individuals lacking other coping strategies such as emotional support and social participation. METHODS: A population based cohort study with 10-year (1982/83-1993) survival analysis was performed in 491 men born in 1914, living in the

A rating scale for psychotic symptoms (RSPS) part I: theoretical principles and subscale 1: perception symptoms (illusions and hallucinations).

The authors present a new rating scale for the psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia and related psychoses. The scale links specific symptoms of psychopathology to dysfunction and overactivity of dopaminergic mechanisms underlying the processes of reward and selective attention. The Rating Scale for Psychotic Symptoms (RSPS) is a 44-item rating instrument with a seven-point severity scale for each item. Psychotic symptoms are classified into three groups: Pathological amplification of mental images (perception symptoms) (subscale 1), Distraction symptoms (including catatonia and passivity experi

Coping and social support as determinants of quality of life in HIV/AIDS.

Coping, social support and quality of life (QOL) were examined in 120 HIV+ people (mean age = 37). The sample came from ambulatory clinics and drop-in centres in Toronto: 29% had AIDS, 35% were HIV symptomatic, and 35% were asymptomatic. Information was gathered from self-administered questionnaires. Respondents had good levels of social support and used a variety of coping strategies. Their scores on the behavioural and subjective measures of QOL were somewhat below average. The illness-related measure indicated that their diagnosis had an almost neutral effect on QOL and showed several areas

An animal model for measuring behavioral responses to anxiogenic and anxiolytic manipulations.

A method for measuring behavioral responses of rats to both anxiolytic and anxiogenic manipulations, the open field drink test (OFDT), is described. This method utilizes the concept that in the open field, appetitive behavior is reduced because of the ambient level of fear experienced in such an environment. For the OFDT, rats were given restricted access to water for 1 h per day for 3 days, and then their behavior was assessed in an open field that contained a water spout at its center. Use of the open field permitted a number of measures to be taken; of these, "time spent drinking" was most

Integrating social cognitive theory with machine learning to predict MSM-women sexual behavior: a multicenter random forest model development study in China.

Understanding and predicting sexual behavior patterns through the lens of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) is essential for identifying behavioral bridges that facilitate HIV transmission. MSM who engage in sexual activity with women (MSM-W) represent a critical yet underexplored subgroup in China. However, existing studies lack theory-driven predictive frameworks that explicitly integrate psychological mechanisms with robust analytics. This study aimed to develop and validate an SCT-guided machine-learning model to predict MSM-W behavior and to evaluate its discriminatory and calibration perform

[The neural bases of loss aversion in economic contexts: a systematic review according to the PRISMA guidelines].

INTRODUCTION: Kahneman and Tversky's prospect theory has become the main model for the study of decision-making. One of its cornerstones, the loss aversion bias (greater sensitivity to losses than to gains), has been demonstrated from the behavioural perspective. AIMS: To analyse the evidence from neuroeconomics and check whether it is consistent with the existence of a neural mechanism of loss aversion. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A systematic review was performed, following the PRISMA guidelines, of the empirical studies found in PubMed and ScienceDirect, a total of 18 studies being included alt

The effect of presentation level on spectrotemporal modulation detection.

The understanding of speech in noise relies (at least partially) on spectrotemporal modulation sensitivity. This sensitivity can be measured by spectral ripple tests, which can be administered at different presentation levels. However, it is not known how presentation level affects spectrotemporal modulation thresholds. In this work, we present behavioral data for normal-hearing adults which show that at higher ripple densities (2 and 4 ripples/oct), increasing presentation level led to worse discrimination thresholds. Results of a computational model suggested that the higher thresholds could

Linking oppositional behaviour trajectories to the development of depressive symptoms in childhood.

Oppositional defiant disorder in childhood is a predictor of later mood disorders. This study assessed whether groups of children can be identified by their course of co-occurring oppositional and depressive symptoms in childhood using group based trajectory modeling. Participants were a cohort of 932 4 or 5 year old offspring of women participating in the National Longitudinal Study of Youth whose symptom trajectories were modeled across ages 4-13 years. Three co-occurring trajectory groups were found: oppositional symptoms only (23%), oppositional symptoms preceding increasing depressive sym

Proposed biological linkages between obesity, stress, and inefficient uterine contractility during labor in humans.

Cesarean delivery has reached epidemic proportions in contemporary western healthcare. For otherwise healthy first-time (nulliparous) women at term gestation with a single fetus in a head down position, the most common clinical diagnosis prompting cesarean delivery is dystocia, including clinical terms such as uterine dysfunction, failure to progress, arrest of dilation and/or arrest of descent of the fetal head. In 2006, the cesarean rate for this lowest risk population of childbearing women was 26% in the United States despite the goal of Healthy People 2010 to reduce this rate to 15% from a

Somatization and stimulus entrapment.

A "vicious circle" hypothesis is put forward for the common kind of somatization which forms the basis of the DSM's "somatization disorder." Two compounding mechanisms are seen to be operative: (1) a failure of higher order inhibitory systems involved in the "medial pain system"; (2) amplification of stimulus intensity produced by the effect of attention. Attentional failure is produced not only by social factors but also by failure of sensory intensity modulation consequent upon (1). The argument focuses on data from borderline patients in whom the unusual prominence of pain may be due, at le

Evaluation of the CCK-4 model as a challenge paradigm in a population of healthy volunteers within a proof-of-concept study.

RATIONALE: Experimental panic induction with cholecystokinin-tetrapeptide (CCK-4) has been established as a model to study the pathophysiology of panic disorder and might serve as a tool to asses the antipanic potential of novel anxiolytic compounds. However, assessment of CCK-4-induced panic does not follow consistent rules. OBJECTIVES: To provide a basis for the use of the CCK-4 model in proof-of-concept studies, we investigated CCK-4-induced panic according to different criteria in 85 healthy volunteers who underwent a CCK-4 bolus injection. METHODS: We assessed panicker/non-panicker rati

Two hypotheses on the causes of male homosexuality and paedophilia.

This note considers two hypotheses on the causes of homosexuality and paedophilia in men, viz. the hypotheses of maternal immunity and of postnatal learning. According to the maternal immune hypothesis, there is progressive immunization of some mothers to male-specific antigens by each succeeding male fetus, and there are concomitantly increasing effects of anti-male antibodies on the sexual differentiation of the brain in each succeeding male fetus. An attempt is made to assess the status of this hypothesis within immunology. Knowledge of the properties of anti-male antibodies is meagre and t
