A yeast-like fungus isolated from a granulomatous and ulcerative skin lesion in a mongrel cat was mycologically examined. The isolate was identified as Sporothrix schenckii from the morphological findings and its pathogenicity in a mouse, confirming the first case of feline sporotrichosis in Japan. Trichophyton soudanense is a common cause of tinea capitis in north-western tropical Africa. In European countries, infection seems to occur nearly exclusively in African immigrants and not in the indigenous population. From 1986 to 1995 we obtained 7908 fungal cultures from patients undergoing treatment at the department of Dermatology in Aachen, Germany. During this period we observed eight cases of tinea capitis by T. soudanense in African immigrants aged 2-11 years. The term tinea axillaris has been used only a few times in the literature. In this paper we describe a male patient with widespread tinea corporis and unguium affecting also both axillary regions. Trichophyton verrucosum was isolated as the causative agent. The patient admitted to no direct contact with infected animals, but had lived in a rural area until a year before the infection became widespread. During a total population survey in 1988 and 1989 in Karonga district, northern Malawi, 4915/61735 (8.0%) people examined were found to have extensive pityriasis versicolor (PV). An additional 6085 people (9.9%) were diagnosed as having mild disease. The highest prevalence rates of extensive and mild PV were found among subjects aged 15-24 years. In this age group between 20% and 25% of people had extensive PV. Rates were generally higher among males than among females. PV was rarely found in prepubertal subjects.

This paper reports a simultaneous pulmonary infection due to Aspergillus fumigatus and Rhizomucor pusillus which evolved to disseminated aspergillosis and mucormycosis in a leukaemic and neutropenic 40-year-old woman. Both fungi were cultured ante mortem from bronchial secretion. Although high doses of intravenous amphotericin B were administered, the course of the infection was fatal. At autopsy, aspergilli were demonstrated by histology in lungs and brain, and zygomycetes were found to have invaded liver and kidneys.

A survey of dermatophytes and dermatophytoses was carried out among patients of the Department of Dermatology, Medical University of Gdańsk, in the years 1984-95. At various clinics of IRCCS S. Matteo Hospital, Pavia, Italy, 269 blood cultures recovered from immunocompromised patients over 4 years have been examined mycologically. Of the 269 cultures, 101 were from HIV-infected patients and five were from cardiac transplant recipients. Of the total examined 96 blood cultures were positive (36%). The most frequent genus was Candida: C. albicans (48%), C. tropicalis and C. parapsilosis (8% each), C. glabrata and C. guillermondii (3% each). Cryptococcus neoformans was detected in 21 patients (22%).

Pulmonary zygomycosis is an aggressive, often terminal infection that may be found in patients who are immunocompromised as a result of cytotoxic chemotherapy. Phialophora verrucosa is one of several pathogenic dematiaceous fungi associated with chromomycosis and occasionally phaeohyphomycosis. Sporotrichosis is a not uncommon deep fungal infection that frequently involves the skin. At present, there are several therapeutic modalities available to treat this infection.
