Narcolepsy with cataplexy is thought to be a hypocretin ligand or hypocretin receptor deficiency syndrome caused by genetic and environmental factors. We looked for an abnormality of the hypocretin pathway in HLA-DQB1*0602-positive monozygotic twins who were concordant for narcolepsy-cataplexy. They had normal cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of hypocretin-1, and we found no mutation in the prepro-hypocretin gene or either hypocretin receptor gene. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to quantify changes in dimensions of nerves and muscle and the proportionate expression of neural antigens in infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS).

We have compared the immunolocalization of neurofilament protein (NF) with two other neuronal-specific intermediate filament proteins in large spinal axonal swellings (spheroids) of motor neuron disease and controls. All spheroids labeled each of the three different subunits of NF, the low, middle, and high molecular weight polypeptides. In doublelabel immunofluorescence, 300 axonal swellings were immunostained for NF, and 87% of them contained the intermediate protein peripherin.
