A new computational knowledge-based model for emulating human performance in decision making tasks is proposed. This model is mainly based on the knowledge acquired through past experience, the knowledge extracted from the environment and the relationships between the concepts that represent these two kinds of knowledge. The proposed model divides the decision making process into two phases. The first phase lies in the estimation of the decision outcomes using a net of concepts. In the second phase, the proposed model uses a value function to score each possible alternative. The design of the

Although the effects of attention on movement execution are well documented behaviorally, much less research has been done on the neurophysiological changes that underlie attentional focus effects. This study presents two experiments exploring effects of attention during an isometric plantar-flexion task using surface electromyography (sEMG). Participants' attention was directed either externally (towards the force plate they were pushing against) or internally (towards their own leg, specifically the agonist muscle). Experiment 1 tested the effects of attention on accuracy and efficiency of f

BACKGROUND: The term endophenotype was used by Gottesman (1991) to describe a trait that may be intermediate on the chain of causality from genes to diseases. Some family relatives of affected patients also carry the endophenotype, although not the disease phenotype. The increased penetrance of the endophenotype, and its closer relationship to the gene than that of the phenotype proper, are expected to help genetic studies. An endophenotype may be neuropathological, neurocognitive, emotional, neurophysiological or neurobiological in nature.
OBJECTIVE: We aim at identifying neurobiological end

A large number of neuroanatomical, neurophysiologic, and neurochemical mechanisms are thought to contribute to the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain. However, mechanisms responsible for neuropathic pain have not been completely delineated. It has been demonstrated that neuropeptide galanin (Gal) is upregulated after injury in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and spinal dorsal horn (SDH) where it plays a predominantly antinociceptive role. In the present study, sciatic nerve-pinch injury rat model was used to determine the effects of exogenous Gal on the expression of the Gal and it

Weakness and fatigue are commonly encountered symptoms in neurological disorders and significantly impair quality of life. In the case of motor axons, conduction block contributes to weakness and fatigue and may be associated with aberrant nerve activity including fasciculations and cramp. These symptoms result from dysfunction of the constituent channels and pumps of the axonal membrane. In critically conducting axons, impulse conduction can be impaired by the effects of activity or by other mechanisms that produce a significant shift in membrane potential. Conduction failure may be accentuat

The aim of the study was to identify the most common electrophysiological abnormalities in early Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Neurophysiological data on 51 GBS patients assessed within 12 days of symptom onset were reviewed. Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) was present in 46 of 51 GBS patients. The following abnormalities were observed in our AIDP patients: absent H reflex in 90.7%, conduction block in the Erb-to-axilla segment in 78.6%, motor conduction velocity suggestive of demyelination in the Erb-to-axilla segment in 45.2%, prolonged F wave latency in 65.2%

Neurophysiological responses related to lessening of pain sensitivity are a suggested mechanism of manual therapy. Prior studies have observed generalized lower pain thresholds associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in comparison to healthy controls. The present study sought to determine whether similar findings were present in suprathreshold measures and measures specific to central integration of pain (temporal summation and after sensations). Additionally, we wished to determine whether measures of pain sensitivity were related to clinical outcomes in participants with signs and sympt

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review is intended to give an overview of fibromyalgia for the anesthesiologist. While the basics of the treatment of fibromyalgia are included, the intent is to provide context to discuss the potential implications in perioperative management.
RECENT FINDINGS: Research continues to demonstrate that fibromyalgia patients have neurophysiologic abnormalities that alter sensory perception, including lower levels of central neurotransmitters associated with the inhibition of pain and higher levels those that facilitate pain. While comorbid mood disorders are more co

Although Parkinson's disease (PD) is defined by its motor symptoms, it is now well recognized that cognitive and affective domains, such as recognition of emotion from facial expressions, may also be impaired. To examine brain mechanisms involved in processing of emotion recognition from facial expressions, we obtained affective ratings and visual event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to facial expressions from 18 PD patients under dopamine-replacement therapy, and 17 healthy age- and sex-matched controls. In control subjects, the early posterior negativity (EPN) of the ERP, which is tho

With the aim of justifying of neurophysiological correlates of depressive disorders spectral parameters of EEG, and peak latencies of the "late" components of auditory cognitive evoked potentials, and latencies of sensorimotor reactions have been analysed in middle age and elderly patients (age 53-72) during the therapy of prolonged psychogenuously provoked depressive reaction (F43.21 by ICD-10). Background depression severity has been associated with the EEG signs of decreased functional state of anterior areas of the left hemisphere, and of increased activation of the right hemisphere (espec

The etiology of medically unexplained symptoms such as conversion disorder is poorly understood. This is partly because the interpretation of neuroimaging results in conversion paresis has been complicated by the use of different control groups, tasks and statistical comparisons. The present study includes these different aspects in a single data set. In our study we included both normal controls and feigners to control for conversion paresis. We studied both movement execution and imagery, and we contrasted both within-group and between-group activation. Moreover, to reveal hemisphere-specifi

OBJECTIVE: Trigemino-cervical reflexes (TCRs) are electromyographic responses induced by electrical stimulation of the trigeminal nerve and recorded in the neck muscles. Trigemino-cervical reflexes are detectable in Parkinson's disease, whereas they are absent in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), an atypical parkinsonism associated with brainstem degeneration. To date, no study has investigated TCRs in multiple system atrophy (MSA), another atypical parkinsonism associated with brainstem involvement, which resembles PSP.
METHODS: To understand whether TCRs are helpful in differentiating P

This study evaluated the effect of increased attention to sensory feedback during exercise. Two 12-week exercise programs that differed only in the presence (PD SAFEx) or absence (non-SAFE control group) of increased attention focused on sensory feedback were compared. Participants were assessed symptomatically using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) before the start of the exercise program, immediately following the 12-week program and after a 6-week nonexercise washout period. Secondary outcome measures included the Timed-Up-and-Go (TUG), Grooved Pegboard (GP) and velocity

According to Milner and Goodale's model (The visual brain in action, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2006) areas in the ventral visual stream mediate visual perception and oV-line actions, whilst regions in the dorsal visual stream mediate the on-line visual control of action. Strong evidence for this model comes from a patient (DF), who suffers from visual form agnosia after bilateral damage to the ventro-lateral occipital region, sparing V1. It has been reported that she is normal in immediate reaching and grasping, yet severely impaired when asked to perform delayed actions. Here we invest

In Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients dysfunction of cholinergic neurons is considered a typical hallmark, leading to a rationale for the pharmacological treatment in use based on drugs that enhance acetylcholine neurotransmission. However, besides altered acetylcholine transmission, other neurotransmitter systems are involved in cognitive dysfunction leading to dementia. Among others, dopamine seems to be particularly involved in the regulation of cognitive processes, also having functional relationship with acetylcholine. To test whether cholinergic dysfunction can be modified by dopamine, we

Developmental learning disabilities such as dyslexia and dyscalculia have a high rate of co-occurrence in pediatric populations, suggesting that they share underlying cognitive and neurophysiological mechanisms. Dyslexia and other developmental disorders with a strong heritable component have been associated with reduced sensitivity to coherent motion stimuli, an index of visual temporal processing on a millisecond time-scale. Here we examined whether deficits in sensitivity to visual motion are evident in children who have poor mathematics skills relative to other children of the same age. We

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP), defined as non-cyclic pain of 6 or more months, is a frequent disorder that may negatively affect health-related quality of life. In women several causes are recognised, although in a not negligible proportion of patients a definite diagnosis cannot be made. Different neurophysiological mechanisms are involved in the pathophysiology of CPP. Pain may be classified as nociceptive or non-nociceptive. In the first case the symptom originates from stimulation of a pain-sensitive structure, whereas in the second pain is considered neuropatic or psychogenic. Patients histor
