Myoepithelioma is defined as myoepithelial cells composed of tumor with solid, myxoid, and reticular growth pattern by the World Health Organization. It is a rare neoplasm that arises in the major salivary gland or minor salivary gland comprising approximately 1% of all salivary gland tumor. This neoplasm occurs in the parotid gland and soft palate mostly, which can be found in other organs. However, up to now, myoepithelioma of nasal septum has not been reported in English medical literature. Histologically, it is grouped as spindle, epitheliod, reticular, and clear cell types. Most surgeons recognize the broad utility of both endonasal and external rhinoplasty approaches. Most understand that there are situations when a given approach offers advantages and may be considered preferable. In this article, the anatomy, incisions, and approaches that are available to the surgeon are reviewed. General indications are discussed for the external and endonasal approaches. The pros and cons of each approach are discussed, and further thoughts on the decision-making process are provided.

Nasal cytology is a simple and safe diagnostic procedure that allows to assess the normal and pathological aspects of the nasal mucosa, by identifying and counting the cell types and their morphology. It can be easily performed by a nasal scraping followed by May-Grunwald-Giemsa staining and optical microscopy reading. This procedure allows to identify the normal cells (ciliated and mucinous), the inflammatory cells (lymphocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, mast cells), bacteria, or fungal hyphae/spores. Apart from the normal cell population, some specific cytological patterns can be of help in

The supernumerary nostril is an exceedingly rare congenital curiosity that requires special skills in congenital malformations, rhinoplasty, and plastic surgery fundamentals for repair. This communication discusses the problem and how it is approached.

Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare tumour of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses that arises from the olfactory neuroepithelium and has unpredictable clinical course. As the sense of smell is phylogenetically one of the first senses and olfactory neuroepithelium is evolutionary conserved with striking similarities among different species, we performed an extensive analysis of the literature in order to evaluate the similarities and differences between animals and humans on the clinical, morphological, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and molecular level. Our analysis revealed that ONB

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: This cadaveric study analyzes the endoscopic endonasal anatomy of the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve (V1 ), from the middle fossa to its orbital entry via the superior orbital fissure. Anatomical relationships with the surrounding cranial nerves and blood vessels are described, with emphasis on their clinical correlation during surgery in this region. Our objective was to describe the anatomical relationships of the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve.
STUDY DESIGN: Cadaveric study.
METHODS: Thirty middle cranial fossae, in adult human cadaveric sp

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's, GPA) is an uncommon disease of unknown etiology classically involves the ELK triad of the ear, nose, throat (E), lungs (L) and kidneys (K) with necrotizing granulomatous inflammation and vasculitis. Most of the initial symptoms begin in the head and neck region with a wide spectrum of involvement of any site ranging from the nasal septum, paranasal sinuses, oral mucosa, larynx and even the external, middle and internal ear. Diagnosis may be delayed because the onset is heterogeneous and sometimes limited to one organ. The pathologic findings of a ch…

We use histological techniques and computer-aided three-dimensional reconstructions made from serial histological sections to describe the ontogeny of the ethmoidal endocranium of discoglossid frog Discoglossus pictus. We identify a pattern of development for the suprarostral cartilage that differs from previous findings and probably represents the ancestral anuran pattern. The nasal cartilages, including the inferior prenasal cartilage, are de novo adult structures. The only larva-derived structures of the adult nasal capsules are the posterior aspects of the solum nasi and septum nasi. We al

A case of malignant melanoma in a 7-year-old, intact, black, male Huacaya alpaca with a history of a chronic, nonhealing wound involving the left external nostril, weight loss, and inappetence is described. Malignant melanoma was diagnosed by histology of punch biopsy specimens from a mass on the maxilla associated with the nonhealing wound and from a mass in the submandibular region. The alpaca was humanely euthanized 10 days after the diagnosis on the basis of the poor prognosis and rapid clinical deterioration. At postmortem examination, the alpaca had an ulcerated, multilobulated, black pi…

Leiomyoma is a benign tumor showing smooth muscle differentiation. Leiomyoma in the nasal cavity is a rare entity which can present with common nasal symptoms. We report a case of 19 years old male patient with nasal leiomyoma. The patient presented with recurrent episodes of nasal obstruction and epistaxis. On nasoendoscopy, there was a single grayish polypoidal mass in the right middle meatus which bled on touch. CT-scan of nose and paranasal sinus showed homogenous opacity indistinguishable from the right middle turbinate. The mass was excised endoscopically. There is no recurrence a year a…

We report a case of a 29-year-old male patient with a respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) of the nasal cavity. REAH is a polypoid proliferation of glandular spaces lined by ciliated epithelium and goblet cells in the upper aerodigestive tract. Although REAHs are benign lesions, they may be confused with a variety of other pathologies such as inflammatory polyps, inverted Schneiderian papillomas and low-grade sinonasal adenocarcinomas. The recognition of this entity is important as complete excision is curative.

BACKGROUND: Teratoma is a rare developmental neoplasm that arises from totipotential tumor stem cells. Head and neck teratomas constitute about 10% of all cases. Only two cases of mature teratoma of the nasal septum have previously been documented in the world literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of histologically confirmed mature teratoma arising from the nasal septum in an eighteen month old Nigerian female who presented with a history of noisy breathing associated with recurrent rhinorrhea since birth. Physical examination revealed obstruction of the right nasal cavity by a pal

Klestadt's cyst, more commonly known as the nasolabial cyst is an uncommon, non-odontogenic, soft tissue cyst characterized by its extra osseous location in the nasal alar region. Following its description first by Zukuerkandl in 1882, only 267 cases have been found in English literature. A case of nasolabial cyst in a 30-year-old female patient is presented.
