The objective of this research was to determine the impacts of including sprouted barley (SB) in the diets of backgrounding beef steers. Angus-influenced steers (328 ± 6.59 kg) were assigned to one of four diets (n = 15/diet): a control (CON) diet, or a diet containing 5%, 10%, or 20% SB (DM basis)-replacing corn silage and some rolled barley. Individual intake and feeding behavior were monitored using Vytelle bunks. Body weight (BW) and ruminal fluid samples were collected on d 0, 30, and 60, while dry matter intake (DMI), feeding behavior, average daily gain (ADG), and gain-to-feed ratio (G:

Peptide YY (PYY) comprises the secretory repertoire of enteroendocrine L-cells alongside glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and positively modulates postprandial satiety, digestion mechanics, and regeneration of the intestinal epithelium. While immortalized GLP-1-secreting human L-cell models support pre-clinical drug discovery, comparable human lines that robustly secrete PYY are lacking, hindering mechanistic studies of its release. We present a biosensor for detection of PYY production and secretion from human enteroendocrine cells in vitro. Guided by in silico structural prediction, we engin

Intramuscular fat (IMF) is a major determinant of meat quality, influencing tenderness, juiciness, flavor, oxidative stability, and nutritional value in livestock products. Increasing evidence indicates that IMF deposition is regulated by complex interactions between host genetics and gut microbial metabolism. This review summarizes current advances in the molecular and metabolic mechanisms linking host genetics and gut microbiota to IMF accumulation and meat quality traits. At the host level, IMF deposition is regulated by coordinated adipogenic networks involving PPARγ-C/EBPα signaling, lipo

Sustainable piglet farming faces challenges from weaning stress, which necessitates the exploration of effective, natural antimicrobial alternatives to enhance growth and gut health. So, this study evaluated the effects of algal oligosaccharide (OSA) supplementation (0, 200, 400, 600, 800 mg/kg) as a natural antimicrobial alternative. Results showed that OSA significantly (p < 0.05) improved slaughter performance and the apparent digestibility of nutrients (OM, CP, amino acids) and energy. OSA increasing serum glucose while decreasing urea nitrogen and cholesterol, suggesting a shift in energy

Investigation of interbacterial antagonism in mixed cultures requires cultivation conditions that support the growth of physiologically distinct microorganisms. Standard systems often favor one interaction partner and distort observed outcomes, particularly during co-cultivation of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Lactobacillus spp. are commonly cultivated in De Man, Rogosa and Sharpe (MRS) medium, whereas Pseudomonas aeruginosa grows optimally in Luria-Bertani (LB) or nutrient broth. These media do not permit balanced co-cultivation and may suppress characteristic phenotypic traits a

Public health guidelines emphasize sodium reduction as the key nutrient-focused dietary strategy to reduce hypertension and cardiovascular disease risk. However, successful reduction in sodium intake remains a significant challenge because of the prevalent preference for salt taste as well as the complexity of multiple interacting factors such as different dietary habits, food production, and biological/cultural variability in consumers. Although the role of potassium in blood pressure (BP) management has been acknowledged, the evidence for potassium's effect on BP has not been as strong as th

Sandy soils are characterized by low organic matter content, weak nutrient retention, and limited water-holding capacity, which restrict crop productivity in arid and semi-arid regions. This study evaluated the individual and combined effects of biochar, Azolla pinnata, and eggshell powder on soil properties and the productivity of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown in sandy soil. Field experiments were conducted during two consecutive growing seasons (2021-2022) at the Ismailia Agricultural Research Station, Egypt, using a randomized complete block design with eight treatments and thre

The intricate relationship between soil microbiota and host plants plays a pivotal role in maintaining soil health and sustaining agricultural productivity. In this review, we examined current knowledge of these interactions, highlighting both their significance and the limitations in existing research. Although substantial progress has been made in elucidating the roles of diverse microbial communities in nutrient cycling, plant growth promotion, and disease suppression, several challenges remain. These include the complexity and diversity of microbial communities, as well as the dynamic natu

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (EM) tree species are ubiquitous in subtropical forests and have distinctive root colonisation characteristics and leaf traits, resulting in differences in nutrient acquisition strategies and ecological functions. Here, we investigated the responses of bacteria, fungi and protists inhabiting tree phyllosphere and rhizosphere to tree mycorrhizal types (AM vs. EM) and planting patterns (single or double tree species planting with the same or different mycorrhizal type) in two seasons. Both leaf- and root-associated fungal richness and community com

Milk is a nutrient-packed biological fluid essential for early development, with the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) playing a fundamental role in cognitive, bone, immune, and gastrointestinal health. Driven by increasing demand for high-protein and sustainable ingredients, the dairy industry has focused on coproducts such as whey protein phospholipid concentrate (WPPC), a microfiltration-derived fraction enriched in MFGM proteins and polar lipids. WPPC contains elevated levels of caseins and whey proteins and is notably enriched in membrane-bound glycoproteins and phospholipids that contribu

Radish leaves are a nutrient-rich yet underutilized byproduct containing abundant fiber, minerals, and phytochemicals; however, their quality is highly affected by drying methods. This study systematically investigated the effects of three drying methods-hot-air drying (HD), microwave drying (MD), and freeze-vacuum drying (FD)-on the nutritional components, bioactive substances, and volatile compounds of radish leaves. A comparative analysis was conducted on their proximate composition, amino acid profiles, mineral contents, antioxidant capacities, glucosinolate profiles, and volatile profiles

Cadmium (Cd), a potent environmental contaminant, persists widely in the environment and threatens global ecosystems. However, the underlying mechanisms of its acute and delayed toxicity effects on pollinating insects still remains elusive. Here, we systematically investigated whether and how environmentally relevant concentrations of Cd exposure impose acute and delayed toxic effects on bumblebees. Seven day exposure of environmentally relevant Cd concentration to gynes exhibited acute toxic effects, impairing their learning and memory capacity. Nutrient reserves were impaired and their growt

Biodiversity loss threatens human health and welfare through the degradation of ecosystem services like pollination1-3. However, without clear mechanistic links between ecosystems and people, these services can remain abstract and intangible. Consequently, it is challenging to predict the effects of environmental degradation on human welfare or to identify effective ecological interventions that improve human lives. Here we record individual-level diets, crop yields, farming income and crop-pollinator interactions in replicate smallholder communities in Nepal to quantify the links among insect

Ovarian carcinoma (OC) is the most lethal gynecological malignancy, with high mortality due to late-stage diagnosis and the development of chemoresistance. Tumor progression relies on a complex interplay between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME), particularly endothelial cells (ECs), which support angiogenesis, nutrient supply, and metastasis. Aberrant neovascularization, driven primarily by VEGF signaling and hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), establishes a structurally and functionally abnormal vasculature that enhances tumor growth and dissemination. In the TME, ECs and OC ce

Serine, a nonessential amino acid classically defined as a precursor for protein synthesis and one-carbon metabolism, is increasingly recognized as a signaling metabolite that links the cellular metabolic status to regulatory decision-making. Intracellular serine availability is shaped by nutrient conditions, glycolytic flux, and activity of the serine synthesis pathway, and these fluctuations are sensed to elicit coordinated metabolic and signaling responses. This review discusses mechanisms by which serine modulates cell growth and stress responses, with particular emphasis on its interactio

Mycorrhizal symbiosis shows the most widespread evolutionarily ancient strategy by which higher plants overcome phosphorus limitations in soil. The acquisition of phosphorus by terrestrial plants is fundamentally constrained by low soil mobility and strong chemical fixation. Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis overcomes these limitations through a regulated transport system that regulates phosphate movement across distinct control points such as soil extraction, internal hyphal translocation, and the host-fungal exchange interface. This review provides a mechanistic synthesis of each checkpoint,

The viability of raising pigs from weaning to slaughter with inorganic phosphorus (iP)-free diets using a hybrid 6-phytase was tested in two trials. Three experimental diets were formulated: T1, a control diet with monocalcium phosphate (MCP); T2, a diet without MCP + phytase (P and Ca phytase matrix formulation); and T3, a diet without MCP + phytase (P, Ca + extra nutrients in a phytase matrix formulation). Rapeseed and sunflower meal were used in addition to soybean meal as protein sources, in order to increase the phytate-P content. Performance was monitored from weaning to slaughter, and b
