GOALS: To evaluate gastric emptying before and after paracentesis in patients with cirrhosis.
BACKGROUND: Patients with ascites often report early satiety. The effect of paracentesis on gastric emptying has not been studied previously.
STUDY: Twelve patients who required therapeutic paracentesis were studied (mean age, 57 years; range, 47-69 years). Gastric emptying was performed with radionuclide scintigraphy. Satiety was evaluated with a visual analogue scale. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used for comparison between pre-and poststudies.

Hypercalciuria is a common side effect during total parenteral nutrition (TPN). We report a patient with long-term TPN, who demonstrated hypercalciuria, hypercalcemia and growth retardation. The patient is a six-year-old Japanese girl with Hirschsprung disease (jejunal agangliosis). Jejunostomy was performed at one-month old and since then her nutrition has depended mostly on TPN. BACKGROUND: Hypernatremic dehydration in neonates is a potentially devastating condition. Recent reports have identified breast-feeding malnutrition as a key factor in its pathophysiology.
METHODS: Using a theoretical framework for breast-feeding kinetics, a retrospective chart review of all neonates less than 28 days of age who were seen at either British Columbia's Children's Hospital or the Vancouver Breastfeeding Centre between 1991-1994 was conducted to identify and classify possible causes of breast-feeding malnutrition among neonates who developed hypernatremic dehydration.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation was performed in 40 subjects. Intestinal bacterial overgrowth (IBD) is very frequent in patients with chronic hepatopathies. Causes of IBO, although not entirely known, principally are: the hepatopathy, the alcoholism and the alterations produced by these two factors, such as achylia (and above all hypochlorhydria), decrease in the secretion of IgA, and malnutrition. On the other hand, the IBO increases the severity of the hepatopathy and frequently produces a bacterial peritonitis. All these data suggest that the IBO play an important role increasing the hepatopathy severity and consequently is a factor to bear in mind.

During the 1994 crisis in Rwanda, a high incidence of full-thickness rectal prolapse was noted among the refugee children in the south-west of the country. The prolapses arose as a result of acute diarrhoeal illness superimposed on malnutrition and worm infestation.
