RATIONALE: Extremity injuries resulting from motor vehicle collisions, especially those leading to bone-exposed wounds, present challenges for achieving effective wound coverage. Such injuries are susceptible to complications including infections, osteomyelitis, and unexpected amputations due to inadequate blood supply. Severe traumatic degloving injuries often entail damage to the surrounding blood vessels, making local or free flaps impractical choices in many cases. Consequently, treatment options may vary based on distinct clinical scenarios, with no standardized guidelines available. Our

BACKGROUND: Protein energy wasting (PEW) and undernutrition are highly prevalent in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but their impact on clinical outcomes is not well described. This prospective longitudinal study in children with CKD assessed the association of nutritional parameters with infection-related hospital admissions (IRHA).
METHODS: Children with CKD2-5D aged 2-18 years and infection-free for 1 month were recruited over 5 years. Evaluation for undernutrition by subjective global nutritional assessment and for PEW using paediatric criteria was undertaken and categorized a

Human milk (HM) offers important nutritional benefits. However, except for phenylketonuria (PKU), there are little data on optimal levels of consumption of HM and a special formula free of disease-related amino acids (SF-AA) in infants with inborn errors of metabolism of amino acids and proteins (IEM-AA-P). We designed a spreadsheet to calculate the amounts of SF-AA and HM required to cover amino acid, protein, and energy needs in patients with the nine main IEM-AA-P in infants aged under 6 months. Upon entering the infant's weight and the essential amino acid or intact protein requirements fo

BACKGROUND: Chylous ascites (CA) is a rare complication of gastrectomy for gastric cancer. While most cases of postoperative CA improve with medication or nutritional support, some are refractory to conservative treatment. A peritoneovenous shunt (PVS) may help patients who are poor candidates for surgery. However, PVS placement for postoperative CA after gastroenterological surgery has been rarely reported. Herein, we present a case of postoperative CA following total gastrectomy with para-aortic lymphadenectomy, treated successfully by PVS placement.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition accounts for almost half of the global under-five child mortality. Worm infections are one of the immediate and commonest causes that affect the nutritional status of children. There is limited data related to the magnitude of wasting and associated factors among children. Therefore, this study was aimed at assessing the magnitude of wasting and associated factors among children aged 2 to 5 years in the Wonago district of Gedeo Zone, southern Ethiopia.
METHODS: Community-based cross-sectional study design was conducted. A total of 3324 children aged 2-5 years were inc

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition contributes to almost half of all under-five deaths. Fetal malnutrition (FM) has been implicated in both short- and long-term consequences among fetal, neonatal, and adult life. Currently, Ethiopia lacks information on the prevalence of fetal malnutrition and its associated factors. This study, therefore, is aimed at assessing the prevalence of FM at birth and its associated factors in South Gondar zone hospitals, northwest Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out from November 1, 2019, to April 30, 2020, among four hospitals of South Gondar zone.

The nutritional cost of activating B cell-mediated immunity is thought to be low in chickens. However, this assumption is incompletely characterized. Immunoglobulin knockout (Ig-KO) chickens lacking B cells and immunoglobulin may potentially be a robust model to investigate the nutritional cost of immunity. Specifically, comparing the growth of Ig-KO chickens to immunocompetent birds (WT) following activation of the immune system should indicate costs associated with B cell-mediated immunity. A total of 3 experiments were conducted to determine if (1) an antibody response to keyhole limpet hem

OBJECTIVE: Better nutritional reserves are proposed as a mechanism for the protective role of obesity in hemodialysis. Little is known about the quality of diet as a major contributor to nutritional status, specifically body mass index and obesity. The aim of this study was to assess dietary inflammatory index (DII®) score and other parameters of diet in normal-weight and obese patients undergoing hemodialysis to understand whether there is a benefit for obese patients.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 85 hemodialysis patients (44 obese and 41 normal-weight). Four-day 24-h dietary

Triatoma infestans, one of the main vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, is strongly associated with rural human ecotopes. Infested peridomestic places could act as a source of house infestation as a result of the movement of vectors among habitats. The quantitative study of phenotypic traits and nutritional variables could be informative about the population structure and the relative mobility of vectors. This is the first approach toward analyzing the phenetic characteristics of T. infestans and the relationship with their potential role to invade and colonize other habitats in the arid Chaco regio

BACKGROUND: HIV infection and malnutrition negatively reinforce each other.
OBJECTIVE: For program guidance, to review evidence on the relationship of HIV infection and malnutrition in adults in resource-limited settings.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Adequate nutritional status supports immunity and physical performance. Weight loss, caused by low dietary intake (loss of appetite, mouth ulcers, food insecurity), malabsorption, and altered metabolism, is common in HIV infection. Regaining weight, particularly muscle mass, requires antiretroviral therapy (ART), treatment of opportunistic infection

The dynamic changes of socio-economics leading to the industrialisation of countries are known to affect lifestyle and nutritional behaviours of the population. Review of the literature on the prevalence of obesity showed increasing numbers of the overweight and obese during the past decade. However, information on health and nutritional status of the obese in Thailand has not been widely publicized. This study reveals the vitamin status and hematological picture in 270 overweight and obese Thais in Bangkok, Thailand, compared with 175 normal subjects. No statistically significant differences

This article presents a brief discussion on the role that "medical practice" plays, related to the type of infant lactation after delivery, and breast-feeding practice during the first months of life. Data on hospital routines and how these predispose artificial feeding practices are seen from a critical angle. The information presented in this paper corresponds to a project carried out in a rural community of the state of México, called Malinalco, where the lactation behavior of 65 women after birth of the child, was followed as of their last period of pregnancy. The main objectives of the st

As the population ages, the incidence of dementia increases. All types of dementia, whether they are reversible or irreversible, lead to loss of intellectual function and judgment, memory impairment, and personality changes. The skills to feed oneself, use eating utensils, and consume items recognized as food, thereby maintaining nutrition status, may be lost as dementia progresses. Reports indicate that nutrition status may be maintained when patients are hand fed, but this is labor intensive and therefore expensive. Feeding via a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube is often chosen as an

The metabolic response to surgical trauma is mainly characterised by an increase in BMR, a negative N balance, increased gluconeogenesis and increased synthesis of acute-phase proteins. These reactions aim at ensuring the availability of endogenous substrates for healing wounds while the synthesis of acute-phase proteins enhances the scavenging process and helps repair. However, if this process is excessive or continues for too long, it leads to a progressive depletion of body compartment with a consequent adverse outcome. Obviously, the severity of such depletion is magnified if the patient i
