Workplace Violence in Mental Health: A Victorian Mental Health Workforce Survey.

The international literature suggests workplace violence in mental health settings is a significant issue, yet little is known about the frequency, nature, severity and health consequences of staff exposure to violence in Australian mental health services. To address this gap, we examined these aspects of workplace violence as reported by mental health services employees in Victoria, Australia. The project used a cross-sectional, exploratory descriptive design. A random sample of 1600 Health and Community Services Union members were invited to complete a survey investigating exposure to violen

Environmental Threats to Kidney Health: A Clinician's Guide to Modern Exposures.

Individuals are increasingly exposed to a diverse array of chemicals through the environment, consumer products, and occupational settings. These exposures, often involving substances with unknown or emerging implications for human health, may pose significant kidney health risks because many are processed by the kidneys and excreted in the urine. Kidneys are particularly vulnerable to injury from inorganic chemicals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury. These originate from geogenic sources, but their exposures are multiplied by anthropogenic activities. Emerging data detail possible kidney ris

Occupational heat stress and adaptation among outdoor workers: a narrative review of global evidence and policy responses.

Occupational heat stress is an escalating global health concern, particularly for outdoor workers exposed to rising temperatures due to climate change. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from 42 peer-reviewed articles and 13 policy documents published between 2014 and 2025, focusing on the health impacts, determinants, and adaptation strategies for outdoor workers. The review identifies a high prevalence of heat-related illnesses-including heat exhaustion, dehydration, kidney disorders, and productivity loss-across sectors such as agriculture, construction, and informal labour. Key vul

Lip, Oral Cavity, and Pharyngeal Cancers: Global Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Prevention: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal cancers (LOPC) are malignancies arising in the lip, oral cavity, and pharyngeal tissues, often asymptomatic in early stages. We aimed to perform a narrative review of the literature on the global LOPC epidemiology, economic burden, risk factors, as well as preventive strategies. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar up to June 2024, using keywords related to lip, oral, and pharyngeal cancers. RESULTS: There are several risk factors for these cancers, including tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, low

Outbreaks of COVID-19 among healthcare personnel in a U. S. veterans administration health care system site, June and August 2023.

BACKGROUND: Occupational COVID-19 remains a challenge among healthcare personnel (HCP). METHODS: This study documents three COVID-19 outbreaks that occurred among vaccinated HCP within a single health care system (HCS) in California, USA in June and August 2023. The Employee Health (EH) unit for the HCS conducted surveillance with structured interviews, identifying outbreaks in real-time. RESULTS: In June, 10 of 25 staff (40%) at a rural outpatient clinic that serves the HCS contracted COVID-19. One week later, 10 of 90 staff (11%) at a second outpatient clinic were infected, with half the c

Risk factors associated with higher skin age relative to chronological age in community-dwelling middle-aged Japanese adults.

Skin condition reflects both chronological aging and overall health, yet few studies have examined its links to lifestyle or cardiovascular risk factors in Asian populations. In 2023, 527 Japanese adults aged 40–64 years underwent facial imaging with the VISIA Evolution, which estimated skin age and quantified eight skin parameters. The difference between skin and chronological age, derived from linear regression residuals, was analyzed for associations with lifestyle and cardiovascular factors using multiple regression. A greater skin–chronological age difference was significantly associated

End-User Perspectives of the Importance of Rehabilitation Technologies and Related Values for Implementation.

Despite the increased availability of rehabilitation technologies (such as robotics) and evidence to support their use, their adoption is still limited in practice. To begin to address this issue, we sought to better understand the perspectives of end-users regarding the implementation of rehabilitation technologies through an online survey. Fifty unique responses across Client (e.g., people with disability and carers), Allied Health (e.g., occupational and physical therapists, podiatrists, psychologists, dieticians, audiologists, exercise physiologists), and Medical (i.e., physicians and nurs

The nexus between sleep disturbances and mental health outcomes in military staff: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Military personnel are unique occupational groups who happen to frequently experience sleep insuffciencies. Since sleep disorders are known to be linked to many psychiatric symptoms, sleep disturbance is a salient concern among active duty service members and veterans. Existing evidence indicates that although sleep disturbances co-occur with mental illnesses, there is a tendency to particularly label them as consequences of certain mental health issues. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This review focuses on the emerging evidence which identifies sleep disturbances as a precursor for mental

Sickness Presenteeism in Prison Officers: Risk Factors and Implications for Wellbeing and Productivity.

Sickness presenteeism involves employees continuing to work while unwell. As presenteeism is influenced by contextual and individual difference factors, it is important to assess its prevalence and implications for wellbeing and productivity in different occupational groups. This study examines these issues in a sample of prison officers working in UK institutions. Data were obtained from a survey of 1956 prison officers. Measures assessed the prevalence of and reasons for presenteeism and the perceived impact on job performance, along with mental health and perceptions of workplace safety cli

Risk Factors for Brain Health in Agricultural Work: A Systematic Review.

Certain exposures related to agricultural work have been associated with neurological disorders. To date, few studies have included brain health measurements to link specific risk factors with possible neural mechanisms. Moreover, a synthesis of agricultural risk factors associated with poorer brain health outcomes is missing. In this systematic review, we identified 106 articles using keywords related to agriculture, occupational exposure, and the brain. We identified seven major risk factors: non-specific factors that are associated with agricultural work itself, toluene, pesticides, heavy m

Heplisav-B in Prior Hepatitis B Vaccine Nonresponders: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B is a potentially deadly infection that can be acquired by exposure to infectious human blood or body fluids. While service members and others at occupational risk are routinely vaccinated to prevent hepatitis B, non-responders to this vaccine are at continued risk. Heplisav-B is a newer vaccine that may offer additional protection to those at risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cases of hepatitis B vaccine non-responders who were given Heplisav-B after receiving six or more doses of standard hepatitis B vaccine were collected from existing health records within the military

Clinical case study of abbreviated cognitive behavioral therapy through an intersectional lens for women health-care workers during the era of COVID-19.

The unprecedented demands of the coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) have imposed a significant degree of psychological distress on women health-care workers (WHCWs). Women comprise 76% of the health-care workforce in the United States and are subject to experience higher psychosocial ramifications in the pandemic era due to gender disparities. Accordingly, women who are dually mothers may be navigating complex interactions of role strain by managing abnormally high parental and occupational workloads. The psychological toll is exacerbated for women holding multiple oppressed identities across

Effect of Workplace Violence and Psychological Stress Responses on Medical-Surgical Nurses' Medication Intake.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is a prevalent phenomenon in the health-care sector globally, but few studies have examined its impact on nurses' use of prescribed and/or over-the-counter medications to manage signs and symptoms. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the direct and indirect effect of workplace violence, through the pathway of psychological stress responses, on nurses' frequencies of medication intake. An occupational stress and health outcomes model was tested in this study. METHODS: A secondary analysis of cross-sectional survey data from 551 medical-surgical nur

The Long-Lasting Influenza: The Impact of Fetal Stress During the 1918 Influenza Pandemic on Socioeconomic Attainment and Health in Sweden, 1968-2012.

The 1918 influenza pandemic had not only a massive instant death toll but also lasting effects on its survivors. Several studies have shown that children born in 1919, and thus exposed to the H1N1 virus in utero, experienced worse health and socioeconomic outcomes in older ages than surrounding birth cohorts. This study combines several sources of contemporary statistics with full-population individual-level data for Sweden during 1968-2012 to examine the influence of fetal exposure to the Spanish flu on health, adulthood income, and occupational attainment. For both men and women, fetal expos

Health Effects of Radon Exposure.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive material that is formed as the decay product of uranium and thorium, and is estimated to contribute to approximately half of the average annual natural background radiation. When inhaled, it damages the lungs during radioactive decay and affects the human body. Through many epidemiological studies regarding occupational exposure among miners and residential exposure among the general population, radon has been scientifically proven to cause lung cancer, and radon exposure is the second most common cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking. However,

The Importance of Nidotherapy and Environmental Change in the Management of People with Complex Mental Disorders.

Much has been done in the last 50 years to achieve a better understanding of the psychosocial causes and other factors influencing the manifestation of mental illness, but there has been a conspicuous omission. Although gross environmental deficiencies were exposed in old mental institutions, 70 years ago the more subtle maladaptive settings that reinforce chronicity in mental illness have often been forgotten. In this review, the potential of systematic environmental manipulation as a treatment (nidotherapy) and other similar forms of management, used many times in the past but now mainly in

Histoplasmosis outbreak associated with the renovation of an old house - Quebec, Canada, 2013.

On May 19, 2013, a consulting physician contacted the Laurentian Regional Department of Public Health (Direction de santé publique des Laurentides [DSP]) in Quebec, Canada, to report that two masons employed by the same company to do demolition work were experiencing cough and dyspnea accompanied by fever. Other workers also were said to be ill. DSP initiated a joint infectious disease, environmental health, and occupational health investigation to determine the extent and cause of the outbreak. The investigation identified 14 persons with respiratory symptoms among 30 potentially exposed pers
