Imaging epileptogenic tubers in children with tuberous sclerosis complex using alpha-[11C]methyl-L-tryptophan positron emission tomography.

Several reports have indicated that cortical resection is effective in alleviating intractable epilepsy in children with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Because of the multitude of cortical lesions, however, identifying the epileptogenic tuber(s) is difficult and often requires invasive intracranial electroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring. As increased concentrations of serotonin and serotonin-immunoreactive processes have been reported in resected human epileptic cortex, we used alpha-[11C]methyl-L-tryptophan ([11C]AMT) positron emission tomography (PET) to test the hypothesis that seroton

Epidemiology of hearing loss and aetiological diagnosis of hearing impairment in childhood.

A total of 117 children, 55 girls and 62 boys with a median age of 8 years, range 2-12 years, was retrospectively evaluated in consideration of: (1) the prevalence rate and characteristics of permanent hearing loss (defined as the average of 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz greater than or equal to 35 dB HL on the better hearing ear); (2) the aetiology of the hearing impairment; (3) the basis for the aetiological diagnosis in the individual child, and (4) the value of non-audiological investigations. The overall prevalence of permanent hearing loss was 1.4% in this geographical area (children with recurr

32 years after pioneering prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission in Europe: achievements, persistent inequities, and the imperative for a coordinated response.

BACKGROUND: Over the past three decades, Europe has led efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, reducing transmission rates to below 1-2% in many Western and Northern countries. Universal antenatal screening, the early initiation of combination antiretroviral therapy, and integrated obstetric-HIV care have made paediatric HIV largely preventable. MAIN BODY: However, national averages obscure persistent inequities within the WHO European Region and inside individual countries. In Eastern Europe and Central Asia, late diagnosis, incomplete screening, and fragmented maternal heal

Exploring the paradox between perception and actual childhood drowning risk: an evidence-based study in Bangladesh.

Childhood drowning is a major public health issue in Bangladesh, especially in rural and island regions. This cross-sectional study explored the gap between perceptions and actual drowning risks by surveying 322 respondents from the northern mainland and Sandwip Island. A purposive sampling strategy was used to identify households with child drowning experiences, and data were collected using a culturally adapted, semi-structured questionnaire. Statistical analyses, including logistic and linear regression, examined associations between perceptions, drowning mortality, and sociodemographic fac

Infants' empathic concern responses moderate the association between maternal and child depressive symptoms.

Although empathic concern abilities typically support adaptive social-emotional functioning, excessive empathic concern may confer risk for emotional difficulties and psychopathology. The current study aimed to examine whether in the context of exposure to maternal depression symptoms (MDS), infant's empathic concern acts as a "risky strength". Specifically, we examined whether children's early empathic concern responses moderate the association between maternal depressive symptoms and toddlers' depressive / anxiety behaviors. Data were collected at two time points: 3 months (T1) and 24-months

Hereditary Tyrosinemia Type 1: Success and Challenges in Indian Subcontinent.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the profile and outcomes of Indian children with hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 (HT-1). METHODS: In this retrospective study, the data of children with a confirmed diagnosis of HT-1 from 2013 to 2024 admitted in the pediatric hepatology unit of a tertiary care referral center were analyzed. RESULTS: Eighteen children with HT-1 with a median (Q1, Q3) age of diagnosis of 15.5 (6, 44) months were included. All children had established cirrhosis. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was noted in 4 patients at baseline, while HCC developed in 4 children on follow-up. Only 7 (38.9%

INSIGHT: Combining Fixation Visualisations and Residual Neural Networks for Dyslexia Classification From Eye-Tracking Data.

Current diagnostic methods for dyslexia primarily rely on traditional paper-and-pencil tasks. Advanced technological approaches, including eye-tracking and artificial intelligence (AI), offer enhanced diagnostic capabilities. In this paper, we bridge the gap between scientific and diagnostic concepts by proposing a novel dyslexia detection method, called INSIGHT, which combines a visualisation phase and a neural network-based classification phase. The first phase involves transforming eye-tracking fixation data into 2D visualisations called Fix-images, which clearly depict reading difficulties

Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis as a cancer predisposition syndrome: The first report of neuroblastoma and review of all cancers in OSCS.

Osteopathia Striata with Cranial Sclerosis (OSCS) is a rare genetic condition primarily characterized by metaphyseal striations of long bones, bone sclerosis, macrocephaly, and other congenital anomalies. It is caused by pathogenic variants in AMER1, a tumor suppressor and a WNT signaling repressor gene with key roles in tissue regeneration, neurodevelopment, tumorigenesis, and other developmental processes. While somatic AMER1 pathogenic variants have frequently been identified in several tumor types (e.g., Wilms tumor and colorectal cancer), whether OSCS (i.e., with AMER1 germline variants)

Neurological symptoms in pediatric abusive head trauma: Multi-center data for clinical forensic medicine.

Central nervous system-associated lesions can frequently be found in abusive head trauma (AHT) cases. Since there are frequently no visible signs of injury on the body surface, the diagnosis of AHT can be challenging. In particular, if the affected child shows only isolated neurological symptoms, these are often misinterpreted as a minor illness. Using a retrospective study design at three university hospitals, 72 medico-legal cases of "shaken baby syndrome" - a common variant of AHT - were analyzed. A comparison between confession cases (n=15) and non-confession cases was used in order to red

Fetal Diagnosis of Supravalvular Aortic Stenosis and Pulmonary Stenosis in a Family with Non-Syndromic Elastin Mutation.

Supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS) has been well described in Williams-Beuren Syndrome and non-syndromic elastin (ELN) mutations. Non-syndromic ELN mutations are inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern with incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. ELN haploinsufficiency leads to progressive arteriopathy, typically affecting the aortic sinotubular junction. Multi-level pulmonary stenosis has also been reported and biventricular obstruction may portend a worse prognosis. Fetal presentation of ELN mutation with SVAS has not been previously reported in the literature. We present a cas

Disorganized Functional Connectivity of Anterior Insular Subnetworks in Adults with Executive Dysfunction after Trauma Exposure.

There is increasing evidence that major trauma can adversely affect the brain and cognition. In some cases, trauma may lead to deficits in executive function (EF). The anterior insula may be a causal outflow hub acting to coordinate EF-related brain networks. To clarify the neural underpinnings of EF deficits (EFD) after trauma, we performed a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) study of anterior insular subnetworks in adults who have lost their only child. A total of 167 participants completed various psychological and cognitive assessments to assess EF-related defic

Policies on children and schools during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Western Europe.

During the pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), mitigation policies for children have been a topic of considerable uncertainty and debate. Although some children have co-morbidities which increase their risk for severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19), and complications such as multisystem inflammatory syndrome and long COVID, most children only get mild COVID-19. On the other hand, consistent evidence shows that mass mitigation measures had enormous adverse impacts on children. A central question can thus be posed: What amount of mitigation should chi

Imaging features of neurosyphilis.

Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum, subspecies pallidum. Although its incidence has declined after the widespread availability of penicillin, it has recently re-emerged, especially in men who have sex with men and in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The neurological manifestations of syphilis, generally known as neurosyphilis, may appear at any time during the infection, including the initial years after the primary infection. Neurosyphilis can be asymptomatic, only with cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities, or symptomatic, characte

Does the State Impact Hope? The Impact of Direct and Vicarious Police Contact on the Optimism of Youth in Large Cities.

A growing body of research has begun to examine the implications of police contact for youth. Largely emphasizing serious police contact (arrest, court involvement, and incarceration), this scholarship has generally found that police contact is associated with negative health and educational outcomes. In this study, we build on this work by examining the implications of direct and vicarious police contact for youth attitudes towards the future, both generally and with respect to graduating college. Using multivariate regression models that incorporated a wide range of control variables and dat

Improvement in obstructive sleep apnea in a child with Down syndrome with rapid palatal expansion.

UNLABELLED: Children with Down syndrome (DS) have distinct orofacial structures that predispose them to sleep-disordered breathing. The management options for obstructive sleep apnea include continuous positive airway pressure, adenotonsillectomy, mandibular advancement, and maxillary expansion. However, most of these treatment options are less effective or less viable for children with DS. Rapid maxillary expansion with a fixed orthodontic appliance is a viable alternative for DS patients because it separates the midpalatal suture and dilates the airway, regardless of the patient's compliance

Permanent Left Bundle Branch Area Pacing for High-Degree Atrioventricular Block in a 6-Year-Old Child with 2-Year Follow-Up.

The feasibility and safety of left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP) used in pediatric patients with atrioventricular block (AVB) have not been well demonstrated. Currently, only several case reports for pediatric patients have been published since the advent of LBBAP, with 3 months to 1 year follow-up. Here, we present a case of LBBAP in a 6-year-old child with a high-degree AVB secondary to the transcatheter device closure of congenital ventricular septal defect. No procedure-related complications were observed, and the electrical parameters were stable at 2-year follow-up. Additionally, we
