Lip Measurements and Preferences in Asians and Hispanics: A Brief Review.

Objective: Most literature regarding lip augmentation refers to Caucasian anthropometric measurements, but ethnic differences affect facial dimensions and the evaluation of beauty. Specifically with regard to Asians and Hispanics, dermatology does not have much literature on the subject. This review investigates the differences in lip measurements and preferences of Asians and Hispanics compared with those of Caucasians. Design: A literature search of other fields, including plastic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, and forensic anthropology, was conducted, and relevant articles we

Relevance of the plasminogen system in physiology, pathology, and regeneration of oral tissues - From the perspective of dental specialties.

Plasmin is a proteolytic enzyme that is crucial in fibrinolysis. In oral tissues, the plasminogen system plays an essential role in physiological and pathological processes, which in addition to fibrinolysis include degradation of extracellular matrix, inflammation, immune response, angiogenesis, tissue remodeling, cell migration, and wound healing. Oral tissues reveal a change in the plasminogen system during pathological processes such as periodontitis, peri-implantitis, or pulpitis, as well as in response to mechanical load. The plasminogen system is also a key element in tissue regeneratio

Facial soft tissue thickness differences among three skeletal classes in Japanese population.

Facial reconstruction is used in forensic anthropology to recreate the face from unknown human skeletal remains, and to elucidate the antemortem facial appearance. This requires accurate assessment of the skull (age, sex, ancestry, etc.) and thickness data. However, additional information is required to reconstruct the face as the information obtained from the skull is limited. Here, we aimed to examine the information from the skull that is required for accurate facial reconstruction. The human facial profile is classified into 3 shapes: straight, convex, and concave. These facial profiles fa

An overview of cleft care in Nigeria.

This is an overview of the present state of cleft lip and palate care in Nigeria. The aim is to stimulate further discussions on the need to improve standard of care and quality of life in patients with cleft lip and palate deformities. The number of cleft surgeries and surgeons involved in cleft repairs across Nigeria is increasing due to availability of free treatment grants provided by non-governmental organisation; therefore, it has become imperative to assess the quality of surgery and quality of cleft care. It is expected that as the number of repaired cleft lip/palate increases, more pa

Mandibular distraction osteogenesis: a clinical experience of the last 17 years.

Mandibular distraction is the treatment of choice for the surgical correction of mandibular hypoplasia of different etiology. It is a surgical technique that is less invasive and time intensive; also, it has a significantly decreased morbidity rate. The experience of lengthening mandibles in the last 17 years had shown that in more severe mandibular hypoplasia, better results will be obtained in the long term with earlier treatment, especially in the more severe grades of hemifacial microsomia types IIB and III. Orthodontics plays a very important role to correct postdistruction occlusal change

Incontinentia pigmenti presenting as hypodontia in a 3-year-old girl: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Incontinentia pigmenti or Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome is a rare X-linked dominant disease that mainly affects the skin, eyes, hair, central nervous system and teeth. The disease is predominant among women. Although dermatologic manifestations are among the most important aspects for the diagnosis of the syndrome, they are less damaging to the patient and do not require treatment. However, oral involvement characterized by hypodontia of deciduous and permanent teeth is important for the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 3-year-old gi

Treatment of gingival recession.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession is an intriguing and complex phenomenon. Patients frequently are disturbed by recession owing to sensitivity and esthetics. Many techniques have been introduced to treat gingival recession, including connective tissue grafting, or CTG; various flap designs; orthodontics; and guided tissue regeneration, or GTR. The authors reviewed human clinical studies to assess which techniques provided optimal results. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors reviewed controlled clinical trials to assess the outcome of gingival grafting. They also included histological studies

[Prosthetic treatment by pushing back part of the hard palate in third-degree cleft palate].

In the third degree of cleft palate, the palate bones are short, the cleft is wide, the degree of palatal tissue atrophy and the anterior displacement of the muscles are great. It is difficult to repair satisfactorily. We carried out a treatment plan by pushing the soft palate and posterior part of the palatal bone fully back to the physiological closure position by surgical means without cutting through the palatal aponeurosis. By using a palatal plate with pharyngeal prong immediately after operation to fix the composite flap posteriorly and restore the defect of the hard palate. The palatal

Surgical correction of mandibular prognathism in Norway, 1975-1984. A national survey.

The estimated need for surgical correction of mandibular prognathism in Norway is 500 patients each year. A questionnaire sent to the maxillofacial surgical units performing orthognathic surgery in Norway showed that in the decade from 1975 to 1985 altogether 1169 patients underwent surgical correction of mandibular prognathism; that is, only 117 patients were treated yearly [corrected]. Extraoral vertical subcondylar osteotomy of the mandibular ramus was the preferred surgical technique, performed on 57% of the patients. Intraoral vertical subcondylar osteotomy of the ramus increased in use a

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction in infancy.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction describes a pain-dysfunction phenomenon that usually afflicts persons in their 4th or 5th decade. The syndrome can be produced by a variety of etiologic factors including occlusal disharmony, articular disorders, and muscle imbalance. It may cause severe otalgia and refer pain to the temple, occiput, nape of neck, and shoulders. Often, associated joint clicking or popping, aural fullness, vertigo, tinnitus, subjective hypoacusis, and nausea occur. As it has not been previously reported in infants, we would like to describe our experience with this diso

Thermoforming time variability of PET-G and TPU aligner sheets across consecutive thermoforming cycles: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Thermoforming time is a critical parameter in the fabrication of thermoformed orthodontic aligners, as it influences polymer softening, material adaptation, and dimensional consistency. Manufacturer-recommended heating durations are typically based on standardized conditions and may not reflect the dynamic thermal behavior of thermoforming units during consecutive fabrication cycles. Empirical data quantifying heating-time variation and stabilization patterns remain limited. METHODS: This in vitro study evaluated heating-time variation across 20 consecutive thermoforming cycles in

Efficacy of an innovative Herbst appliance with TADs for patients with hyperdivergent class II malocclusion: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Class II treatment with mandibular retrusion often involves the Herbst appliance due to its efficiency and low requirement of cooperation. Despite its advantages, it causes side effects concerning the occlusal plane and pogonion in terms of clockwise rotation that hinder the desired mandibular advancement for hyperdivergent patients. In this study, we will use a newly designed Herbst appliance, and a protocol that is accompanied by TADs for vertical control to avoid maxillary clockwise rotation. We hypothesise that the effect of the Herbst appliance with the vertical control appr
