INTRODUCTION: The craniovertebral junction (CVJ) comprises the occiput, atlas, and axis. Radiographic evaluation of this region involves knowledge of only a few anatomical landmarks, as well as basic normal measurements and relationships to perform CVJ craniometry. Occipital bone anomalies and atlanto-occipital non-segmentation typically produce basilar invagination. Atlas anomalies predominantly involve the posterior arch, while the os odontoideum accounts for the majority of axis anomalies.

Hedgehog (Hh) signals regulate invertebrate and vertebrate development, yet the role of the cascade in adipose development was undefined. To analyze a potential function, we turned to Drosophila and mammalian models. Fat-body-specific transgenic activation of Hh signaling inhibits fly fat formation. Antley-Bixler syndrome was first described in 1975 and to date at least 44 cases have been reported. Osteoporosis leading to fracture can occur during pregnancy. Bone density may be low before pregnancy due to recognised causes such as coeliac disease, osteogenesis imperfecta and previous anorexia nervosa (secondary osteoporosis). Three unrelated patients with congenital arthrogryposis and brittle bones, the main neonatal signs of Bruck syndrome, are presented. Between January 1991 and January 1996, pseudarthroses of the legs were treated prospectively in 48 patients by application of high-energy extracorporeal shock waves with an experimental device. The mean duration of pseudarthrosis was 12 months. On average, 2.4 surgical interventions had previously been performed. A miniature system of distraction devices has been employed for maxillary-midface advancement in two children with cleft lip and palate, class III malocclusion, and associated midfacial hypoplasia. We collected data on 39 prenatally diagnosed osteochondrodysplasias. We detected 30 (76.9%) cases in the first and second trimesters, including 18 (46.2%) with two twins before the 24th week of gestation. The success of the grafting procedures is dependent on multiple factors including the presence of growth factors.
