INTRODUCTION: Ten to twenty percent of persons experience spinal pain during growth. Causes are diverse in adolescents, and it is essential to determine etiology rapidly so as to guide optimal management.
HYPOTHESIS: It is important for the pediatric orthopedist to understand the natural history of conditions inducing spinal pain.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study included 116 adolescents presenting with spinal pain at the Hôpital Nord (Marseille, France) between January 1, 2009 and January 1, 2014. Malignant tumoral etiologies were excluded. Mean patient age was 13.6 years. Risser

OBJECTIVE: To identify subgroups of pain trajectories in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA), and to explain these different trajectories by patient characteristics, lifestyle, and coping factors, as well as radiographic features.
METHODS: Longitudinal data of pain severity (0-10) from 5 years of followup of the CHECK (Cohort Hip and Cohort Knee) study was used. Latent class growth analysis identified homogeneous subgroups with distinct trajectories of pain. Multinomial regression analysis was used to examine different lifestyle and coping characteristics between the trajectori

OBJECTIVE: In addition to dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, and subfertility, pain in the lower extremities has been described to be a further complaint in women affected by endometriosis, and lysis of nerve entrapment was thought to be associated with amelioration of leg pain. Therefore, we aimed to compare the prevalence of cyclic leg pain and pain intensity between women with endometriosis and without endometriosis, and to evaluate the effect of laparoscopic surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Forty-four women with endometriosis and 58 controls were included in a prospective, controlled clinical trial at a Un

The antinociceptive role of spinal 5-HT5A receptors in rat models of pain along with their expression was evaluated in the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglion (DRG). Nociception was assessed in the formalin, capsaicin, and acetic acid writhing tests. The expression of 5-HT5A receptors was determined by Western blot analysis. Intrathecal treatment with serotonin (5-HT, 10-100 nmol) or 5-carboxamidotryptamine (5-CT, 0.03-0.3 nmol) dose-dependently prevented 1% formalin-induced nociception. Furthermore, 5-HT reduced capsaicin- and acetic acid-induced nociception. 5-HT- or 5-CT-induced antinocice

This study quantified the association between recreational physical activity and daily function in women with fibromyalgia, and determined if this association is mediated by symptoms of pain, depression, or body mass. Twenty-three women diagnosed with fibromyalgia participated in an observational survey study. Recreational physical activity and the impact of fibromyalgia on daily function were assessed using the sport and leisure time physical activity subscales of the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire (BPAQ) and the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), respectively. Potential mediato

OBJECTIVE: Despite showing acceptable psychometric properties, the criterion validity of the original Fibromyalgia Rapid Screening Tool (FiRST) has been called into question for including insufficiently challenging comparison groups. Consequently our objective was to validate a Spanish version of the FiRST including pain disorders more analogous to fibromyalgia.
METHODS: The FiRST was translated following international standards. Internal consistency and temporal stability were assessed. The ability of the FiRST global score as a screening tool for fibromyalgia (criterion validity) was assess

OBJECTIVES: Patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) often report increased pain in response to changes in weather conditions. Nevertheless, scientific evidence supporting this relationship is scarce. The aim of this study was to assess a potential relationship between pain intensity and meteorological factors, through a newly developed, portable device, in patients affected by chronic masticatory muscle pain.
METHODS: Seven female subjects were diagnosed with myofascial pain of the masticatory muscles, according to RDC/TMD criteria, were recruited, and participated in the study. Each

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Pain after uvulopalatoplasty continues to cause patients significant morbidity, especially from the tonsillectomy portion. The literature describes multiple techniques to reduce post-tonsillectomy pain, none being definitive. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of intraoperative ice pack application on post-uvulopalatoplasty pain.
STUDY DESIGN: Single-blinded, randomized controlled trial.
METHODS: After inclusion and exclusion criteria were met, patients were enrolled and randomized, and subsequently underwent standard electrocautery uvulopalatoplasty.

Patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) often present with axial symptoms, including abnormal posture, postural instability, and gait disorder. Although spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is effective for pain, little is known about the effect of SCS on motor function in PD patients. The present study investigated the effect of SCS on posture and gait in 15 PD patients, 5 men and 10 women aged 63-79 years (mean 71.1 years), with low back pain and leg pain who received SCS. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used for pain evaluation pre- and postoperatively. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rati

A recurrent clinical dilemma in the management of patients with painful metastatic lesions is achieving a balance between effective analgesic therapies versus intolerable side effects, in particular altered mental status. We present the case of an immunosuppressed patient post-lung transplant who was suffering from intractable pain caused by widely metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. The patient's progressive, excruciating neuropathic pain was localized to the area of the left wrist and forearm. Additionally, the patient complained of moderate pain at sites of tumor involvement on her right ar

Gingival enlargement is quite a common pathology in pediatric patients and may be inflammatory, noninflammatory, or a combination of both. Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis, although rare, is a slowly progressive benign enlargement that affects the marginal gingiva, attached gingival, and interdental papilla. The fibromatosis may potentially cover the exposed tooth surfaces, causing esthetic and functional problems. The treatment of gingival fibromatosis is essential because it causes difficulties with mastication, speech problems, mispositioning of teeth, esthetic effects, and psychological di
