Influenza pandemics typically occur in multiple waves of infection, often associated with initial emergence of a novel virus, followed (in temperate regions) by a resurgence accompanying the onset of the annual influenza season. Here, we examined whether data collected from an initial pandemic wave could be informative, for the need to implement non-pharmaceutical measures in any resurgent wave. Drawing from the 2009 H1N1 pandemic in 10 states in the USA, we calibrated simple mathematical models of influenza transmission dynamics to data for laboratory confirmed hospitalisations during the ini…

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has a great impact on both, physical and psychological wellbeing. The COVID-19 pandemic promoted increasing digitalization of the work environment and social isolation. This psychosocial stress in turn can induce physical distress with clinical manifestation. So can the changed work and social environment in the COVID-19 pandemic trigger acute cardiovascular disease?
CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we present a case of a 56-year-old postmenopausal woman suffering from Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) evoked by emotional stress during a virtual work meetin

During the current SARS-CoV2 pandemic, fear of nosocomial infection could keep neutropenic patients from contacting the healthcare system with infection. We analyzed nationwide hospital contacts for neutropenic fever during the first seven weeks of the Danish shelter at home order. Using national registers, we extracted data on all unplanned hospital contacts due to neutropenic fever. We included 311 admissions, 13-30 per week, and found no difference between 2017-2019 and 2020. The incidence rate ratio varied between 0.68 and 1.11 with no effect on mortality. Thus, our data indicate that Dani

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by a dynamic virus, has had a profound global impact. Despite declining global COVID-19 cases and mortality rates, the emergence of new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants remains a major concern. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the genomic sequences of SARS-CoV-2 within the Bhutanese population during the pandemic. The primary aim was to elucidate the molecular epidemiology and evolutionary patterns of SARS-CoV-2 in Bhutan, with a particular focus on genetic variations and li

COVID-19 pandemic confinement caused changes in families and children's routines worldwide. Studies conducted at the beginning of the pandemic have examined the harmful effects of these changes on mental health, including sleep disturbances. As sleep is essential for optimal childhood development, this study was designed to determine preschool-aged (3-6 years old) children's sleep parameters and mental well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico. Using a cross-sectional design, a survey was applied to parents of preschool children, inquiring about their children's confinement status, rou

BACKGROUND: The second wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic recorded a surge in rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) infection in COVID-19-positive patients with diabetes and on concomitant steroid therapy. The rapidly progressive and devastating nature of the disease necessitated prompt diagnosis and early intervention to improve patient outcomes. Histopathology and fungal culture remain essential tools; however, these investigations have long and variable turn-around times (TATs) and may delay the initiation of treatment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people voluntarily reduced their necessary healthcare. We examined whether supplying educational digital versatile discs (DVDs) before admission can reduce parental rejection of pediatric cardiac catheterization for congenital heart disease (CHD). Parents of 70 children with CHD selected for cardiac catheterization were randomly allocated to the DVD (received pre-admission DVDs in the outpatient department; 70 parents of 35 children) or non-DVD groups (did not receive the DVDs; 70 parents of 35 children). The parents could reject the admission of their children wi
