Prediction of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting from patient-reported and genetic risk factors.

PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is common among cancer patients. Early identification of patients at risk for CINV may help to personalize anti-emetic therapies. To date, few studies have examined the combined contributions of patient-reported and genetic risk factors to CINV. The goal of this study was to evaluate these risk factors. METHODS: Prior to their first chemotherapy infusion, participants completed demographic and risk factor questionnaires and provided a blood sample to measure genetic variants in ABCB1 (rs1045642) and HTR3B (rs45460698) as well as CYP2D6

Internet-based cognitive-behavior therapy for procrastination: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Procrastination can be a persistent behavior pattern associated with personal distress. However, research investigating different treatment interventions is scarce, and no randomized controlled trial has examined the efficacy of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT). Meanwhile, Internet-based CBT has been found promising for several conditions, but has not yet been used for procrastination. METHOD: Participants (N = 150) were randomized to guided self-help, unguided self-help, and wait-list control. Outcome measures were administered before and after treatment, or weekly throughout the

Patient and Informant Views on Visual Hallucinations in Parkinson Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Visual hallucinations (VHs) are a very personal experience, and it is not clear whether information about them is best provided by informants or patients. Some patients may not share their hallucinatory experiences with caregivers to avoid distress or for fear of being labeled insane, and others do not have informants at all, which limits the use of informant-based questionnaires. The aim of this study was to compare patient and caregiver views about VHs in Parkinson disease (PD), using the North-East Visual Hallucinations Interview (NEVHI). METHODS: Fifty-nine PD patient-informant

Publication pressure and burn out among Dutch medical professors: a nationwide survey.

BACKGROUND: Publication of scientific research papers is important for professionals working in academic medical centres. Quantitative measures of scientific output determine status and prestige, and serve to rank universities as well as individuals. The pressure to generate maximum scientific output is high, and quantitative aspects may tend to dominate over qualitative ones. How this pressure influences professionals' perception of science and their personal well-being is unknown. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We performed an online survey inviting all medical professors (n = 1206) of the 8 academi
