Quality of care for migrant populations with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Italy: a retrospective analysis of data from the the Italian AMD (Associations of Medical Diabetologists) annals initiative.

PURPOSE: Italy is a major hub for migration routes. Disparities in health management across different geographic regions, particularly among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), are well recognized, yet comprehensive data on the quality of T2D care in migrant populations remain limited. METHODS: Quality indicators of T2D care were analyzed for foreign patients compared with European patients using the 2022 AMD Annals database. The Italian National Institute of Statistics classification defined geographic origins. RESULTS: Data on country of origin were available for 179,536 T2D p

Nematicidal potential of Carissa carandas seed extract against Meloidogyne incognita and identification of its bioactive compounds.

Plant-parasitic nematodes, especially root-knot nematodes (RKNs) of the genus Meloidogyne, are major agricultural pests, causing crop yield losses of up to 80% in vegetables. Rapid reproduction intensifies soil infestation, and reliance on synthetic nematicides is declining due to environmental and health risks, necessitating sustainable alternatives. This study investigates the nematicidal potential of Carissa carandas L. methanolic seed extract, known for bioactive compounds, against Meloidogyne incognita juveniles (J2) and egg masses. In vitro assays at concentrations of 250, 500, and 1000

Correction to the Article "Diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease in Adults in Portugal: Practical Recommendations from National Clinical and Laboratory Experts".

Following publication of the original article, the authors identified an error in the content. The corrected text is presented in the PDF. The original article has also been corrected. Chronic kidney disease represents a significant public health issue, affecting approximately 9.8% of the adult population in Portugal. Despite this figure, early diagnosis of this disease in high-risk groups remains limited. Although only two parameters are essential for its diagnosis - estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria - in Portugal, over 50% of stage 3 - 5 patients have not undergone

Haplotype-Specific Genetic Epidemiology of Sickle Cell Anemia Patients in Accra, Ghana: Patterns, Clinical Implications, and Public Health Responses.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder with a diverse spectrum of clinical presentation, often determined by inherited βS gene haplotypes. Ghana, a country with a significant SCD burden, lacks population haplotype frequency data, hindering anthropological, genetic, and clinical understanding and management of the disease. A prospective sample of 191 SCD patients (sickle cell anemia; homozygous HbSS) was recruited at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra. Identification of βS gene haplotypes was performed using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR

May Measure Month 2022 in Italy: A Focus on Fixed-dose Combination, Therapeutic Adherence, and Medical Inertia in a Nationwide Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Notably, only about half of hypertensive patients manage to achieve the recommended blood pressure (BP) control. Main reasons for the persistence of uncontrolled BP during treatment are lack of compliance on the patients' side, and therapeutic inertia on physicians' side. METHODS: During the global BP screening campaign "May Measure Month" (MMM) (May 1st to July 31st, 2022), a nationwide, cross-sectional, opportunistic study endorsed by the Italian Society of Hypertension was conducted on volunteer adults ≥

Understanding Physical Activity Behavior in Ghanaian Adults with Type 2 Diabetes: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

Despite a relatively low prevalence rate, sub-Saharan Africa bears a substantial diabetes burden. Physical activity (PA) plays a crucial role in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, PA levels among this population remain suboptimal. This study aimed to explore patients' perspectives on the barriers and facilitators to PA participation among Ghanaian adults with T2DM. Thirteen adults with T2DM were recruited from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana, for this qualitative descriptive study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis.

Piloting the addition of contingency management to best practice counselling as an adjunct treatment for rural and remote disordered gamblers: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Problematic gambling is a significant Canadian public health concern that causes harm to the gambler, their families, and society. However, a significant minority of gambling treatment seekers drop out prior to the issue being resolved; those with higher impulsivity scores have the highest drop-out rates. Consequently, retention is a major concern for treatment providers. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and internet-delivered CBT and contingency management (CM+) as treatments for gambling disorder in r

Assessing puberty in ex situ male cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) via fecal hormone metabolites and body weights.

Cheetahs are one of the most heavily studied felid species, with numerous publications on health, disease, and reproductive physiology produced over the last 30 years. Despite this relatively long history of research, there is a paucity of crucial biological data, such as pubertal onset, which has direct and significant applications to improved management of ex situ cheetah populations. This study aimed to determine age of pubertal onset in ex situ male cheetahs using non-invasive fecal steroid hormone monitoring and body weights. Fecal samples from 12 male cheetahs from four institutions were

Mass primaquine treatment to eliminate vivax malaria: lessons from the past.

Recent successes in malaria control have put malaria eradication back on the public health agenda. A significant obstacle to malaria elimination in Asia is the large burden of Plasmodium vivax, which is more difficult to eliminate than Plasmodium falciparum. Persistent P. vivax liver stages can be eliminated only by radical treatment with a ≥ seven-day course of an 8-aminoquinoline, with the attendant risk of acute haemolytic anaemia in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Primaquine is the only generally available 8-aminoquinoline. Testing for G6PD deficiency

HIV-Related Stigma and Its Impact Across the HIV Care Continuum: Implications for Testing, Treatment, and Long-Term Retention.

While major medical breakthroughs have made human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) a manageable chronic illness, stigma related to HIV continues to create significant obstacles for prevention efforts, testing programs, treatment access, and ongoing patient care. This stigma affects people at personal, social, healthcare, and system-wide levels, preventing progress toward international HIV control objectives, particularly the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) 95-95-95 targets, which aim for 95% of people living with HIV to know their HIV status, 95% of those diagnosed to receive s
