Regional and international approaches on prevention and control of animal transboundary and emerging diseases.

Transboundary animal diseases pose a serious risk to the world animal agriculture and food security and jeopardize international trade. The world has been facing devastating economic losses from major outbreaks of transboundary animal diseases (TADs) such as foot-and-mouth disease, classical swine fever, rinderpest, peste des petits ruminants (PPR), and Rift Valley fever. Lately the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) due to H5N1 virus, has become an international crisis as all regions around the world can be considered at risk. In the past decades, public health authorities within indust

The study aims to investigate health-seeking behaviors among IDPs in Somalia, including factors associated with their decisions to seek healthcare, the types of healthcare services utilized, and barriers encountered in accessing care. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted in eight densely populated IDP cam

Pharmacological interventions for preventing clotting of extracorporeal circuits during continuous renal replacement therapy.

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major comorbidity in hospitalised patients. Patients with severe AKI require continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) when they are haemodynamically unstable. CRRT is prescribed assuming it is delivered over 24 hours. However, it is interrupted when the extracorporeal circuits clot and the replacement is required. The interruption may impair the solute clearance as it causes under dosing of CRRT. To prevent the circuit clotting, anticoagulation drugs are frequently used. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of pharmacological interventions

HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Among People with Criminal Justice Involvement in the United States: A Systematic Review.

People with criminal justice involvement (PCJI) face a heightened risk of HIV yet remain underserved by prevention strategies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This systematic review synthesizes current evidence on PrEP utilization among PCJI, identifying key barriers and facilitators that influence uptake and adherence. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive literature search and thematic analysis. Twenty-five studies met inclusion criteria, with most conducted in the Northeast and Southern United States, an

Elevated Risk of Stroke in Young Adults After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Nationwide Study of 1 Million Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Although stroke is commonly perceived as occurring in older adults, traumatic brain injury, one of the risk factors for stroke, is a leading cause of death in the younger adults. This study evaluated stroke risk in young-to-middle-aged adults based on traumatic brain injury severity and stroke subtypes. METHODS AND RESULTS: For this retrospective, population-based, cohort study, data of adults aged 18 to 49 years who were diagnosed with traumatic brain injury were obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance Service between 2010 and 2017. Traumatic brain injury history was m

HPV knowledge, screening barriers and facilitators, and sources of health information among women living with HIV: perspectives from the DC community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) causes 99% of cervical cancer cases. Despite available prevention methods through the HPV vaccine and two screening modalities, women continue to die from cervical cancer worldwide. Cervical cancer is preventable, yet affects a great number of women living with HIV (WLH). Low screening rates among WLH further exacerbate their already high risk of developing cervical cancer due to immunosuppression. This study explores WLH's current cervical cancer knowledge, screening barriers and facilitators, and sources of health information. METHODS: Focus

Demographic and Clinical Correlates of the Cost of Potentially Preventable Hospital Encounters in a Community Health Center Cohort.

This study sought to describe the cost of hospital care for ambulatory care-sensitive conditions (ACSCs) and to identify independent predictors of high-cost hospital encounters related to an ACSC among an urban community health center cohort. The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study of individuals engaged in care in a large, multisite community health center in New Haven, Connecticut, with any Medicaid claims between June 1, 2018 and March 31, 2020. Prevention Quality Indicators of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality were used to identify ACSCs. The primary outcome was a h

The CORE Group Polio Project's Community Volunteers and Polio Eradication in Ethiopia: Self-Reports of Their Activities, Knowledge, and Contributions.

In 2001, the CORE Group Polio Project (CGPP) began to support polio eradication initiatives in hard-to-reach pastoralist and semi-pastoralist high-risk border areas of Ethiopia by training and supporting community volunteers (CVs) for immunization promotion and community-based surveillance activities. This article describes the development and current status of the CGPP CV network in Ethiopia. It also reports the results of a 2016 survey of CVs. Community volunteers are selected jointly by the local community, local government officials, and local health facility staff. They work closely with

Is the effect of compulsory community treatment on preventable deaths from physical disorders mediated by better access to specialized medical procedures?

OBJECTIVES: Compulsory community treatment has been shown to reduce preventable deaths from physical disorders-these causes being up to 10 times more common than suicide in psychiatric patients. We investigated whether this was mediated by better access to specialized medical procedures. METHOD: All patients on compulsory community treatment for over 11 years were compared with matched control subjects using linked administrative health data from Western Australia (state population of about 2.24 million). Outcomes were access to revascularization and other specialized procedures at 1-, 2-, an
