Synthesis of Allenes by Hydroalkylation of 1,3-Enynes with Ketones Enabled by Cooperative Catalysis.

A method for the synthesis of allenes by the addition of ketones to 1,3-enynes by cooperative Pd(0)Senphos/B(C6F5)3/NR3 catalysis is described. A wide range of aryl- and aliphatic ketones undergo addition to various 1,3-enynes in high yields at room temperature. Mechanistic investigations revealed a rate-determining outer-sphere proton transfer mechanism, which was corroborated by DFT calculations.

In vivo evidence of neuronal loss in the hypothalamus of narcoleptic patients.

A dysfunction of the orexin (hypocretin) system in the hypothalamus has recently been linked to the pathogenesis of narcolepsy. The authors used in vivo proton MR spectroscopy to assess the N-acetylaspartate (NAA) content in the hypothalamus of narcoleptic patients. Hypothalamic NAA/creatine-phosphocreatine was reduced in narcoleptic patients compared with control subjects (p < 0.01). Hypothalamic neuronal loss/damage is a central pathogenetic feature in narcolepsy.

Three-Dimensional Numerical Simulation of Catalyst Ink Droplet Impact on Moving Patterned Substrates Based on the Multi-relaxation Lattice Boltzmann Method.

To optimize the fabrication process of a catalyst-coated membrane and enhance the performance for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis, a three-dimensional multicomponent multiphase pseudopotential model based on the multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method (MRT-LBM) is developed to numerically simulate the impact of catalyst ink droplets on a moving substrate. The effects of substrate moving velocity, surface morphology, microstructure size, and initial droplet diameter on the spreading behavior are systematically investigated. Results reveal that the moving substrate can enha

Hydrogen Peroxide Electrosynthesis in Natural Water: Dual Role of Calcium Scaling in Two-Electron Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

The two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR) represents an attractive strategy for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) electrosynthesis, which has stimulated growing interest in decentralized water treatment. Conventionally, ubiquitous Ca2+ in natural water induces electrochemical scaling, which has been widely regarded as the predominant factor suppressing the 2e- ORR. However, this study reveals unprecedented protective effects of calcium scale on the 2e- ORR, challenging previous perspectives. Calcium scales as alkaline barriers reduce proton availability and prevent parasitic reduction of in

Tracking the environmentally responsive intracellular fate and autophagic interactions of mesoporous silica nanoparticles via gap spectral detection.

Understanding the complex intracellular fate and autophagic mechanisms of environmentally responsive biomaterials is essential for advancing targeted disease therapies. However, monitoring these dynamic interactions in living cells is frequently hindered by the spectral crosstalk of traditional fluorescence microscopy and the requirement for specialized multichannel GaAsP/PMT detector arrays with high digitization depth. Herein, we develop a gap spectral detection method that captures spatial and spectral information across the visible range using a general confocal microscope. By implementing

Deuterated Aprotic Electrolytes Enable Rechargeable Lithium Batteries With High (Electro)Chemical and Thermal Stability.

Electrolytes with exceptional (electro)chemical and thermal stability are essential prerequisites for high-energy-density rechargeable lithium batteries. Conventional aprotic ether and ester solvents contain polarizable C─H bonds that trigger parasitic proton transfer reactions on the high-voltage cathode surface, driving exothermic electrolyte decomposition and impairing battery cycling stability and safety. Here, we show that deuterium substitution at polarizable C-H moieties introduces kinetic and thermodynamic isotope effects to retard proton transfer and lower solvent oxidation Gibbs free

Efficient Bicarbonate Electrolyzer with a Forward-Bias Bipolar Membrane.

Direct electrolysis of carbon dioxide (CO2)-captured bicarbonate solutions offers a promising route for CO2 valorization, as it avoids the energy-intensive regeneration and compression steps required to supply purified gaseous CO2. However, most bicarbonate electrolyzers rely on proton-driven in situ CO2 release at the cathode, which promotes hydrogen evolution, increases the cell voltage, and limits energy efficiency. Here, we demonstrate a bicarbonate electrolyzer based on a forward-bias bipolar membrane (fBPM) that decouples local CO2 release from direct proton flux. The fBPM cell delivers

Unusual Hydrations of Amide I: An Insight into Protein Structure and Flexibility.

The higher atomic mass of deuterium basically affects hydrogen-bonding interactions and solvent association, raising critical alarms about the precision of biomolecular measurements executed in heavy water. Herein, we combine linear infrared (IR) spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore how solvent isotopic exchange alters protein structure as well as dynamics. Comparative studies of different protonated (H2O, CH3OH) and deuterated (D2O, CD3OD) solvents expose noticeable differences in h

Inversed Cation Size Effects on Methanol Formations From CO2 Electroreduction by Immobilized Cobalt Phthalocyanine.

The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to methanol offers a compelling pathway for sustainable fuel synthesis, wherein cations in the electric double layer (EDL) exert a substantial influence on catalytic performance. Although cation modulation of CO2-to-CO conversion has been extensively documented, its influence on downstream reduction pathways toward CH3OH has received comparatively little attention. Using multiscale simulation, we establish that methanol synthesis over immobilized cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) is kinetically governed by the final proton transfer (*CH2OH + H2O → * + CH3OH + O

Elucidating the sensing mechanism of a fluorescent probe for formaldehyde detection: A computational study under acidic and neutral conditions.

The probe HBT-BA1 based on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) can achieve rapid optical responses and show promising potential for formaldehyde (FA) detection. However, the ESIPT-mediated luminescence regulation mechanism remains completely unexplored, particularly regarding how environmental conditions determine the subsequent reaction pathways of key intermediates. In this work, the systematic theoretical study on the environment-dependent, dual-pathway FA sensing mechanisms was performed by using quantum chemical methods. Under neutral condition, the probe captures FA and

Limitations of quality-of-life assessment and long-term side effects in nasopharyngeal carcinoma: a narrative review.

Long-term symptom burden and quality of life (QoL) are pivotal aspects of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) survivorship. In NPC, the unique spectrum of late complications, specifically neuro-endocrine and otological sequelae, distinguishes this disease from other head and neck malignancies. The evolving treatment landscape, characterised by the widespread adoption of intensity-modulated radiotherapy and the emerging promise of intensity-modulated proton therapy to further reduce radiation toxicity, has driven renewed interest in the granular assessment of survivorship issues in this typically yo

Impact of Structural Flexibility on Tunneling Contribution to the Reaction Mechanism of Spontaneous Succinimide Formation in Asn-Gly-Containing Peptides.

Spontaneous deamidation and isomerization of asparagine (Asn) residues is a major pathway of nonenzymatic protein aging, where Asn-Gly-containing peptides (NG motifs) represent the most reactive sequence. In this context, the first step of isomerization is succinimide formation, which is initiated by a concerted proton-transfer and nucleophilic activation step. Although the overall mechanism is established, the detailed nature of the rate-determining succinimide formation step and the possible role of nuclear quantum effects remain unclear. Here, we combine density functional theory (DFT), int

Physicochemical Characterisation of Ceftobiprole and Investigation of the Biological Properties of Its Cyclodextrin-Based Delivery System.

Ceftobiprole is a novel and promising antibiotic; however, the direct pharmacological use of its native form is limited by its low water solubility. The first part of this study provides a deeper insight into the physicochemical properties of this drug. One- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra in D2O were recorded, and a complete assignment of 1H and 13C signals was achieved with the support of quantum mechanical calculations. The combined results from capillary electrophoresis and NMR confirmed the cationic nature of ceftobiprole at pH values well below 3 and the prot

Selective Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to Ethylene or Ethanol via Tuning *OH Adsorption.

Selective electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) into ethylene (C2H4) or ethanol (C2H5OH) is a high challenge. In this study, the rational manipulation of Cu defect sites was realized for the selective formation of C2H5OH and C2H4. Low-coordination amorphous and medium-coordination grain-boundary Cu defect sites with different *OH affinity were found to play a decisive role in the selective protonation of CH2CHO*. In particular, grain-boundary-rich Cu (denoted as Cu-1) that weakly adsorbed *OH and CH2CHO* favored the protonation on β-C of CH2CHO*, leading to the selective product

Cobalt(II) Phthalocyanine Substituents Tune the Electrocatalytic CO2 Conversion to Methanol.

Cobalt phthalocyanine (Co(II)Pc) and its derivatives are promising molecular electrocatalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO and methanol (CH3OH). Despite increasing interest, a detailed mechanistic understanding of how ligand substituents influence catalytic activity, selectivity, and efficiency remains limited. In this study, we employ density functional theory (DFT) to systematically investigate the influence of electron-donating groups (EDGs) and electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) on the electronic structure and redox properties of Co(II)Pc electrocatalyst, and to elucidate

A mechanistic surface complexation model for glyphosate adsorption to ferrihydrite in competition with phosphate.

The adsorption and mobility of glyphosate (PMG) in soils, sediments, natural waters, and wastewater treatment sludge are controlled by small-sized metal (hydr)oxides and affected by competition with phosphate. In this study, the adsorption of PMG to ferrihydrite, a ubiquitous nano-sized iron (hydr)oxide, is measured by batch adsorption experiments at a wide concentration (∼0.02 - 0.6 mM) and pH range (∼4-10), in the absence and presence of phosphate. The adsorption data were interpreted using the charge distribution and multisite ion complexation (CD-MUSIC) model for ferrihydrite. Including ph

Genome-wide screen reveals glycerol-induced aminoglycoside potentiation against Staphylococcus aureus via boosting GlpK-initiated energy metabolism.

Potentiation of existing antibiotics represents a promising strategy for combating the global health crisis of antibiotic resistance. Here we report that 1 min co-treatment with glycerol markedly enhances aminoglycoside efficacy against stationary-phase Staphylococcus aureus cells. This rapid combined treatment also effectively eliminates S. aureus biofilms and persister cells, methicillin-resistant S. aureus clinical isolates in vitro, and S. aureus in a mouse skin infection model. The potentiation is achieved through rapid enhancement of proton motive force-dependent aminoglycoside uptake. A

Studies of the Energy Dependence of Diboson Polarization Fractions and the Radiation-Amplitude-Zero Effect in WZ Production with the ATLAS Detector.

This Letter presents the first study of the energy dependence of diboson polarization fractions in WZ→ℓνℓ^{'}ℓ^{'}(ℓ,ℓ^{'}=e,μ) production. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector. Two fiducial regions with an enhanced presence of events featuring two longitudinally polarized bosons are defined. A nonzero fraction of events with two longitudinally polarized bosons is measured with an observed significance of 5.3 standard deviations in the region with 100<p_{T}^{Z}≤20

Aggregation-Induced Modulation of Ground and Excited State Photophysics of 5-(tert-Butyl)-2-Hydroxy-1,3-Isophthalaldehyde (5-tBHI).

5-(tert-Butyl)-2-hydroxy-1,3-isophthalaldehyde (5-tBHI) is a photochromic material susceptible to either excited state proton transfer or excited state intramolecular proton transfer, depending upon the solvent. However, it has also been found to aggregate in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. In this current study, based on the steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy, supported by crystallography, quantum chemical density functional theory calculation, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, we report on the aggregation of this potential single benzene-based emitter (SBBE) in neat so
