Lasting effects of redlining: The association of historical redlining and cognitive function in older Black adults.

BACKGROUND: Residing in a formerly redlined community is often associated with worse health. Few studies have studied redlining and late-life cognition; none have examined multiple cognitive domains. METHODS: Black older adults (N = 676, mean baseline age 74.1 [SD: 6.5] years, 78.2% female) from two cohorts in Chicago, IL completed annual cognitive assessments of episodic, semantic, and working memory, perceptual speed, and visuospatial ability. Baseline geocoded addresses were matched to historic Home Owners' Loan Corporation grades ("best," "still desirable," "definitely declining," and "re

Hepatitis E Vaccination Preferences and Willingness-to-Pay Among Residents: A Discrete Choice Experiment Analysis.

Objectives: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is associated with severe hepatitis and high mortality rates, yet vaccination coverage remains suboptimal. Investigating public preferences for HEV vaccination is critical for developing targeted prevention strategies. This study employed a discrete choice experiment (DCE) to quantify attribute preferences and willingness-to-pay (WTP) for HEV vaccination among Chinese residents (in Shaanxi Province, for example), aiming to inform evidence-based immunization policy optimization. Methods: A cross-sectional survey recruited 3300 participants using str

Prevalence and Clustering of Lifestyle Risk Factors for Chronic Diseases Among Middle-Aged Migrants in Japan.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Migrants are recognized as a vulnerable population for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) due to unique socio-cultural and environmental challenges associated with acculturation. Despite a growing migrant population, evidence on NCD risk among migrants in Japan is scarce. This study examined the prevalence, co-occurrence, and clustering of modifiable NCD risk factors among middle-aged foreign residents in Japan. METHODS: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted among foreign residents aged 30-60 years (n = 384). Eight risk factors were assessed: tobacco use (inclu

Skilled Nursing Facility Population Characteristics and Length of Stay: A Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: Skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) offer short-term, subacute care following injury or hospitalization, with Medicare fully covering stays ≤20 days. As the US population ages, SNF demand is increasing, yet this population remains poorly characterized. Prolonged stays increase pathogen exposure, with shared spaces and visitors potentially elevating viral transmission. We estimated the prevalence of self-reported respiratory symptoms, shared space use, and visitor frequency among SNF residents and their associations with length of stay (LOS). DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTIN

Factors associated with patient and health care system delay among migrant and local tuberculosis patients in Istanbul: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Effective tuberculosis (TB) management requires timely diagnosis and immediate treatment initiation. The urgency for diagnosing and treating TB is particularly acute among immigrants, who face heightened health risks due to factors such as poverty, hazardous working conditions, and limited healthcare access. The objective of this study was to examine the characteristics of patient and health care delays among migrant and local TB patients in Istanbul and to identify factors associated with delays in the diagnosis and treatment of TB in both migrant and local patients. METHODS: Thi

Decline in prevalence of tuberculosis following an intensive case finding campaign and the COVID-19 pandemic in an urban Ugandan community.

BACKGROUND: Systematic screening is a potential tool for reducing the prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) and counteracting COVID-19-related disruptions in care. Repeated community-wide screening can also measure changes in the prevalence of TB over time. METHODS: We conducted serial, cross-sectional TB case finding campaigns in one community in Kampala, Uganda, in 2019 and 2021. Both campaigns sought sputum for TB testing (Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra) from all adolescents and adults. We estimated the prevalence of TB among screening participants in each campaign and compared characteristics of people wi

Characteristics of People Who Do Not Complete a Public Health Interview: An Assessment of Colorado Enteric Disease Surveillance Data.

OBJECTIVES: Although enteric disease case interviews are critical for control measures and education, not all case-patients are interviewed. We evaluated systematic differences between people with an enteric disease in Colorado who were and were not interviewed to identify ways to increase response rates and reduce biases in the surveillance data used to guide public health interventions. METHODS: We obtained data from the Colorado Electronic Disease Reporting System from March 1, 2017, through December 31, 2019. Among case-patients not interviewed and interviewed, we used univariate analyses

Oral cholera vaccine coverage evaluation survey: Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals and host community in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

INTRODUCTION: Cholera remains a significant public health concern in many parts of the world, particularly in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene. Bangladesh and other impoverished nations have been severely affected by cholera outbreaks, especially in areas with a high population density. In order to mitigate the spread of cholera, oral cholera vaccines (OCVs) are recommended as a prophylactic measure. In May 2018, 775,666 of the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) in the registered and makeshift camps and 103,605 of the residents in the host community received two doses of OCV Sha

Emergency food distribution efforts in New Orleans, LA after Hurricane Ida.

BACKGROUND: The provision of food aid after a natural disaster is necessary to prevent hunger, particularly in low-resourced and low-income communities. Little is known about the operational challenges associated with ensuring equitable distribution of emergency food resources to communities in need following a disaster. To address this gap, this study assessed emergency food distribution efforts in New Orleans, LA during the 2 weeks following Hurricane Ida's landfall on August 29, 2021. METHODS: Information on free food distribution events was gathered from online sources. A list of distribu

Deep Immune Phenotyping and Single-Cell Transcriptomics Allow Identification of Circulating TRM-Like Cells Which Correlate With Liver-Stage Immunity and Vaccine-Induced Protection From Malaria.

Protection from liver-stage malaria requires high numbers of CD8+ T cells to find and kill Plasmodium-infected cells. A new malaria vaccine strategy, prime-target vaccination, involves sequential viral-vectored vaccination by intramuscular and intravenous routes to target cellular immunity to the liver. Liver tissue-resident memory (TRM) CD8+ T cells have been shown to be necessary and sufficient for protection against rodent malaria by this vaccine regimen. Ultimately, to most faithfully assess immunotherapeutic responses by these local, specialised, hepatic T cells, periodic liver sampling i

A comparison of SARS-CoV-2 RNA extraction with the QuickGene-810 Nucleic Acid Isolation System compared to the EZ1 Advanced DSP Virus Kit.

BACKGROUND: To curb SARS-CoV-2 transmission, citizens were urged to get vaccinated and adhere to hygiene recommendations (keeping distance, washing hands, wearing face masks), as well as informing contacts if infected. Studies confirm the effectiveness of these measures in reducing virus spread. Understanding factors influencing nonadherence is vital for enhancing the efficacy of future pandemic education campaigns. METHODS: An online survey assessed nonadherence to SARS-CoV-2 containment recommendations among 30,000 randomly selected Cologne residents aged 18 or older. Invitations were sent

Inflammatory molecular endotypes of nasal polyps derived from White and Japanese populations.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a highly heterogeneous disease with disparate inflammatory characteristics between different racial groups and geographies. Currently, little is known about possible underlying distinguishing factors between these inflammatory differences. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to interrogate differences in CRSwNP disease between White/non-Asian patients and Japanese patients by using whole transcriptome and single-cell RNA gene expression profiling of nasal polyps (NPs). METHODS: We performed whole transcriptom

Structural Racism and COVID-19 in the USA: a County-Level Empirical Analysis.

Substantial health disparities exist across race/ethnicity in the USA, with Black Americans often most affected. The current COVID-19 pandemic is no different. While there have been ample studies describing racial disparities in COVID-19 outcomes, relatively few have established an empirical link between these disparities and structural racism. Such empirical analyses are critically important to help defuse "victim-blaming" narratives about why minority communities have been badly hit by COVID-19. In this paper, we explore the empirical link between structural racism and disparities in county-

Blastomycosis in 64 Wisconsin Children: Unanticipated Infection Risk and Severity in Urban Residents.

BACKGROUND: Blastomycosis, an endemic mycosis of immunocompetent individuals, is typically seen after exposure to waterways within rural wooded regions. It is not considered a disease of urban environments. Infection can be solely pneumonic or disseminate to skin, bone or central nervous system. Unknown factors influence disease acquisition and severity in children. METHODS: We analyzed acquisition risks and disease characteristics of blastomycosis in children seen at a tertiary care center from 1998 to 2018 to identify potential exposure sources, measure disease severity and assess the effec
