Laparoscopic and robot-assisted transperitoneal lateral adrenalectomy: a large clinical series from a single center.

Since Gagner performed the first laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LTLA) in 1992, laparoscopy has become the gold-standard procedure in the treatment of adrenal surgical diseases. Among all laparoscopic approaches, the transperitoneal lateral adrenalectomy (LTLA) is currently the most widespread procedure. The aim of this article is to analyze our experience in laparoscopy and robot-assisted laparoscopy for the management of surgical adrenal diseases and to value the safety and feasibility of those surgical approaches. From May 2011 until December 2018 were performed 112 adrenalectomies for adrenal

Conquering new battlegrounds: Successful management of isolated giant retrovesical hydatid cyst with robotic assistance.

Hydatid disease (HD) is an accidental human parasitic infestation by cestodes and is most commonly caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Liver happens to be the most common site of involvement, although involvement of other organ symptoms is not uncommon. Involvement of the retrovesical pouch by hydatidosis is generally secondary in nature with an incidence of 0.1%-0.5% only. Primary retrovesical hydatid cyst (RVHC) is extremely rare with only few cases in existing literature. RVHC can present with a wide gamut of symptoms ranging from asymptomatic to obstructive uropathy. A 38-year-old male pres

Clinical improvement with intensive robot-assisted arm training in chronic stroke is unchanged by supplementary tDCS.

BACKGROUND: Intensive robot-assisted arm training in the chronic phase of stroke recovery can lead to clinical improvement. Combinatorial therapeutic approaches are sought to further optimize stroke recovery. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is one candidate to combine with robotic training, as transient increases in excitability and improvements in motor behavior have separately been reported. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether tDCS, delivered prior to robotic training, could augment clinical improvement. METHODS: We conducted a dual-site, randomized controlled trial in 82 chroni

Gasless transoral robotic thyroidectomy using the DaVinci SP system: Feasibility, safety, and operative technique.

BACKGROUND: Transoral robotic thyroidectomy (TORT) is an ideal method for minimally invasive thyroidectomy, as there is less flap dissection during the procedure and no postoperative scars. However, this method also has the limitation of present DaVinci system and some technical problems related to CO2 gas insufflation that must be resolved. We investigated the feasibility and safety of gasless TORT using the latest version of the DaVinci system (SP). METHODS: From October 2018 to January 2019, we performed 10 surgeries of gasless TORT using the DaVinci SP at Yonsei University Hospital. RESU

A low-cost, automated parasite diagnostic system via a portable, robotic microscope and deep learning.

Manual hand counting of parasites in fecal samples requires costly components and substantial expertise, limiting its use in resource-constrained settings and encouraging overuse of prophylactic medication. To address this issue, a cost-effective, automated parasite diagnostic system that does not require special sample preparation or a trained user was developed. It is composed of an inexpensive (~US$350), portable, robotic microscope that can scan over the size of an entire McMaster chamber (100 mm2 ) and capture high-resolution (~1 μm lateral resolution) bright field images without need for

Factors affecting urinary continence and sexual potency recovery after robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is the most recent surgical technique for localized prostate cancer. The Da Vinci (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA) system was first introduced in Brazil in 2008, with a fast growing number of surgeries performed each year. OBJECTIVE: Our primary endpoint is to analyze possible predictors of functional outcomes, related to patient and tumor features. As secondary endpoint, describe functional outcomes (urinary continence and sexual potency) from RARP performed in the Sírio-Libanês Hospital (SLH), a private institution, in São Paulo,

Robotic vs. open surgical management of ureteroenteric anastomotic strictures: technical modifications to enhance success.

Development of ureteroanastamotic strictures (UAS) after urinary diversion is not uncommon, but is challenging to treat. Poor outcomes are likely with endoscopic and radiologic management, and definitive surgical treatment can cause significant morbidity. The comparative advantages of an operative approach have not yet been fully described in the literature. We retrospectively reviewed the prospectively maintained Tulane University Department of Urology quality assurance database of 12 patients who underwent operative UAS repair between 2012 and 2018. Data were reviewed for operative approach,

Effect of prostate gland weight on the surgical and oncological outcomes of extraperitoneal robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.

BACKGROUND: Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is performed by urologists as one of the surgical procedures for treating prostate cancer. Numerous studies have been published with regard to the impact of prostate weight on performing RARP but were limited by the insufficient number of patients and use of the transperitoneal approach. This study aimed to determine the effect of prostate gland weight on the surgical and short-term oncological outcomes of RARP using the extraperitoneal approach. METHODS: In total, 1168 patients who underwent extraperitoneal RARP (EP-RARP) performed by a

Visual vs vibrotactile feedback for posture assessment during upper-limb robot-aided rehabilitation.

Repetitive and intensive exercises during robot-aided rehabilitation may expose patients to inappropriate and unsafe postures. The introduction of a sensory feedback can help the subject to perform the rehabilitation task with an ergonomic posture. In this work, the introduction of visual and vibrotactile feedback in a robotic platform for upper limb rehabilitation has been proposed to ensure ergonomic posture during rehabilitation. The two feedback modalities have been used to provide information about incorrect neck and trunk posture. Ten healthy subjects have been involved in this study. Ea

Calmer: a robot for managing acute pain effectively in preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit.

INTRODUCTION: For preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit, early exposure to repeated procedural pain is associated with negative effects on the brain. Skin-to-skin contact with parents has pain-mitigating properties, but parents may not always be available during procedures. Calmer, a robotic device that simulates key pain-reducing components of skin-to-skin contact, including heart beat sounds, breathing motion, and touch, was developed to augment clinical pain management. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to evaluate the initial efficacy of Calmer for mitigating pain in preterm infa
