Cur-EGCG-Fe coordination nanoparticle-functionalized gelatin hydrogel biointerfaces for antibacterial and inflammatory microenvironment-regulatory wound repair.

Bacterial colonization, oxidative stress, and persistent inflammation jointly impair infected wound healing. Here, curcumin (Cur)-containing epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)-Fe coordination nanoparticles (CEF NPs) were incorporated into gelatin through Fe3 +-mediated interactions. The resulting hydrogels (Gel/CEF) exhibited injectability, self-healing behavior, a porous structure, and favorable hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. Under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, Gel/CEF3 generated heat and reduced viable Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in vitro. Gel/CEF3 extracts

Analysis and objective assessment of transoral robotic surgery.

PURPOSE: Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has become a well-established surgical technique for the treatment of oropharyngeal cancer, but the significant learning curve and lack of standardized credentialing have resulted in wide variability in surgical outcomes. This study aims to define procedure-specific competence standards for TORS and test whether a hierarchical task analysis (HTA)-derived procedure-based assessment (PBA) distinguishes experience levels. We examined the ability of PBA and Global Evaluative Assessment of Robotic Skills (GEARS) scores to discriminate between novice and exp

Current approaches to measuring high-intensity locomotor actions in adult male professional soccer. A scoping review.

High-intensity locomotor actions (HILAs) including high-speed running (HSR), sprinting, accelerations, and decelerations are critical to performance and injury risk in professional soccer. Rapid technological and methodological developments since 2021 necessitate an updated synthesis of how these actions are quantified and interpreted in applied settings. A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Five databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, Academic Search Complete, Web of Science) were searched for English-language studies published between 22 March 2021 and 22 February

Reversible Sol-Gel Transition in Thermoresponsive Collagen Hydrogels for Cryogen-Free Cell Logistics.

Cell culture is foundational to biomedical advancements, yet its widespread clinical and practical distribution is severely constrained by the high infrastructural costs of cryogenic logistics and the physical stressors of liquid-phase transit. Herein, we propose a proof-of-concept cryogen-free cell transportation strategy leveraging a rapid reversible thermoresponsive collagen (RRTC) hydrogel regulated by simulated body fluid (SBF). Operating via temperature-driven physical network assembly and disassembly rather than chemical crosslinking or chemical modifications, the RRTC system undergoes

Predictability of sleep slow oscillation emergence and spatial extent from pre-onset neural dynamics.

Slow oscillations (SOs; ~ 0.5-1.5 Hz) are a hallmark of non-rapid eye movement sleep and are known to support memory consolidation. Although their dynamics are well characterized, processes that precede SO initiation and predict their spatial extent remain largely unknown, despite their potential utility for closed-loop intervention. Using high-density EEG from 29 healthy adults, we examined neural activity in the 2-s interval preceding the SO trough. SOs were classified into Global and Frontal subtypes, which differ in propagation. We quantified instantaneous spectral power, time-frequency dy

HES1 oscillations are required for cell cycle reentry in oestrogen receptor-positive breast cancer cells.

Long-term recurrence in breast cancer is driven by reactivation of dormant disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) and remains a major clinical challenge, particularly in estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) tumors. This process is underpinned by regulation of the cell cycle machinery that controls quiescence maintenance and exit. HES1, a Notch pathway transcription factor, regulates key cell cycle genes and has been shown to demonstrate protein expression oscillations. Here, we sought to establish whether HES1 oscillations may regulate ER+ cancer cell quiescence and reactivation. To investigate this, we

Context-dependent promotion of epithelial-mesenchymal transition by IL-13Rα2/STAT6 signaling in colorectal cancer.

The precise mechanistic role of Interleukin-13 receptor alpha-2 (IL-13Rα2) in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains elusive, specifically regarding whether it functions as an active signaling receptor or a passive decoy. Its unique role in metastatic phenotypic plasticity remains poorly understood. We identified IL-13Rα2 as a powerful oncogenic signaling hub that significantly increases CRC cell proliferation, migration, and colony formation using shRNA knockdown and CRISPR activation to modify IL-13Rα2 across a range of CRC cell lines with different baseline characteristics. Most importantly, we fo

S-Methylmethionine (Vitamin U): A Critical Narrative Review of Pharmacological Mechanisms, Evidence Levels, and Translational Barriers.

S-methylmethionine (SMM, also known as vitamin U) is a sulfur-containing vitamin-like compound that has been investigated since the 1940s for its gastroprotective and cytoprotective properties. Historically derived from observations of antiulcer activity in plant-derived foods, SMM has been studied in preclinical models and limited clinical settings for its multilevel pharmacological effects. This narrative review critically evaluates the available evidence on SMM's pharmacological actions across organ systems, with explicit differentiation between preclinical and clinical data. It covers the

SFTSV-encoded microRNA-like small RNA as prognostic biomarkers in severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a highly fatal infectious disease caused by the SFTS virus (SFTSV). Reliable prognostic biomarkers are essential for early intervention, yet specific markers for SFTSV infection remain unidentified. In this study, we identified SFTSV-encoded microRNA-like small RNAs (milRNAs) in patients' sera and evaluated their potential as prognosis biomarker. A multi-phase study involving 170 laboratory-confirmed SFTS patients, 40 patients with other infection and 80 healthy controls was conducted. Small RNA deep sequencing was performed, followed by qua

Morphological intelligence in dynamic aerial docking: a Bistable Tension-Hinge Gripper.

While unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly expected to perform active physical interactions, dynamic aerial docking remains fundamentally challenging. Conventional active grippers struggle to achieve rapid response and reliable locking simultaneously due to sensing delays, actuation latency, and impact vulnerability. To address this challenge, this paper presents an aerial docking system that integrates mechanical design and flight control, built around a Bistable Tension-Hinge Gripper (BTHG). By incorporating morphological intelligence, the BTHG utilizes the collision impact to cr

Effect of intrathecal fentanyl on dexmedetomidine requirement for sedation during spinal anesthesia: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adequate sedation during spinal anesthesia requires careful titration to avoid hemodynamic instability and respiratory complications. We hypothesized that intrathecal fentanyl, used as an adjunct to neuraxial anesthesia, would reduce dexmedetomidine requirements for conscious sedation. This study evaluated the effects of intrathecal fentanyl on the total dose of dexmedetomidine during spinal anesthesia. METHODS: Sixty-four patients undergoing knee or ankle arthroscopy under spinal anesthesia were randomly assigned to two groups. The fentanyl group received 0.5% bupivacaine 10 mg w

Addressing Gaps in the Chicago Classification Version 4.0: Defining an Optimal Intrabolus Pressure Measurement on Esophageal Manometry.

BACKGROUND: Intrabolus pressure (IBP) reflects the pressure within the esophageal lumen during bolus transit and serves as a physiologic marker of outflow resistance at the esophagogastric junction (EGJ). The lack of a standardized or validated method to measure IBP is a critical limitation for interpreting high resolution manometry (HRM) and identification of clinically relevant EGJ outflow obstruction (EGJOO). METHODS: Three distinct cohorts, "Controls", Normal motility", and "conclusive EGJOO" were selected from a prospectively enrolled cohort of adult patients. All patients had at least u

Measuring the Time-Scale-Dependent Information Flow Between Maternal and Fetal Heartbeats During the Third Trimester: Impact of Fetal Sex and Maternal Chronic Stress.

Prenatal maternal stress alters maternal-fetal heart rate coupling, as demonstrated by the Fetal Stress Index derived from bivariate phase-rectified signal averaging. Here, we extend this framework using information-theoretical measures to elucidate underlying mechanisms. In 118 third-trimester pregnancies (59 stressed, 59 control), we computed entropy rate (ER), sample entropy (SE) and transfer entropy (TE) under multiple conditioning paradigms, employing mixed linear models for repeated measures. We identified dual coupling mechanisms at the short-term (0.5-2.5 s), but not long-term (2.5-5 s

Role of interatrial connection ablation in re-entry dynamics: an in silico evaluation.

AIMS: Interatrial connections (IACs) may act as pathways sustaining atrial fibrillation (AF), yet their role as ablation targets remains uncertain due to challenges in identifying IAC-dependent re-entrant circuits. This study tracks re-entrant activity along IACs, characterizes IAC-dependent re-entries, and assesses the impact of in silico IAC ablation on re-entry maintenance. METHODS AND RESULTS: Six patient-specific biatrial bilayer models were reconstructed from CT and MRI-derived geometries, each incorporating four IACs: Bachmann's bundle, fossa ovalis, upper posterior, and coronary sinus

Chest compression synchronized ventilation versus chest compression superimposed by sustained inflation in asphyxiated newborn piglets: a randomized animal trial.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines on neonatal resuscitation recommend 90 chest compressions (CCs) and 30 ventilations (3:1 C:V) per minute in newborns. We have described an alternative resuscitation strategy where CCs are superimposed with sustained inflation (CC + SI), which allows for passive ventilation during compression. A more recent strategy is CCs with synchronized ventilation (CCSV), in which a ventilator flow sensor recognizes airflow during the downward phase of compression and thereby triggers an inflation. No study has compared CCSV with CC + SI in an asphyxiated newborn piglet model. Newbor

Generation Characteristics and Regulation Mechanisms of Monodisperse Droplets of JP-10-Based Nanofluids via Drop-on-Demand Technology.

JP-10 is a pivotal high-density hydrocarbon fuel for advanced aerospace propulsion systems. Doping aluminum nanoparticles to prepare nanofluid fuels is a promising route to enhance its energy density and combustion performance, yet the droplet formation mechanism of such multiphase fuels remains poorly understood, hindering single-droplet combustion research and atomization system optimization. This work constructed a piezoelectric drop-on-demand (DOD) monodisperse droplet generation platform integrated with phase Doppler anemometry (PDA) and high-speed imaging. Using Al/JP-10/OA nanofluids wi

Lysine methyltransferase 5C (KMT5C) promoted malignant growth of prostate cancer through FGFR1/STAT3 pathway and regulated the immune response.

BACKGROUND: The role of KMT5C varies across different tumor types, while its expression and function in prostate cancer remain largely unreported. This study investigated KMT5C expression in prostate cancer and its effects on tumor growth and immune response. METHODS: Following KMT5C knockdown and overexpression, we evaluated cell proliferation, cell cycle distribution and angiogenesis, and detected the activation of FGFR1/STAT3 pathway via Western blot. The molecular interaction between KMT5C and FGFR1 was bioinformatically predicted and experimentally validated. Subcutaneous xenograft model

Reducing state anxiety with alpha-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety reactivity to acute stress is a transdiagnostic vulnerability factor. We tested whether a single session of alpha-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) targeting the frontoparietal control network reduces stress-evoked state anxiety in healthy adults. METHODS: In a randomized, blinded, sham-controlled study, 42 participants (mean age 58.9 years) completed an acute stress task before and after stimulation. The task was an adapted moving-circles paradigm in which circle collisions triggered a brief aversive event (mild electric shock plus unpleasant n

Home-based video-oculography during spontaneous vertigo attacks: A proof-of-concept feasibility study in Ménière's disease and vestibular migraine.

BackgroundEpisodic vestibular disorders like Ménière's disease (MD) and vestibular migraine (VM) pose diagnostic challenges because patients are often assessed between attacks, when clinical signs are absent. Recording ictal eye movements could provide objective phenotypic data; however, the practicality of using unsupervised home-based video-oculography in everyday clinical settings remains poorly studied.MethodsWe conducted a prospective proof-of-concept study in patients with episodic vertigo. Participants were given portable, wireless video-oculography goggles for unsupervised home use and
